  • If you have the top bar enabled, you can see it at the top on the right hand side.

  • There's a decent chance it will. The fediverse is—generally speaking—a fairly friendly and welcoming place. That's in part to it's decentralized nature and individual moderation tools. Bad actors can be blocked on an individual level (I just blocked /u/donaldtrump last night because I do not want to see stupid parody accounts and just like that he's gone) as well as on an instance level for anyone not following the rules.

Each instance has their own rules about how to behave, so the bigots and whatnot get booted if they cause problems. Eventually they find an equally terrible server that will have them and once they start up again, that instance can be defederated, which is basically like cutting off the bridge to their island… no way to communicate. Eventually they end up alone or with equally terrible people on other instances.

That's not to say that the fediverse doesn't have it's share of problems or is perfect, but we're working hard to try and keep this a decent place to be.

  • The fediverse exploded after Twitter became a dumpster fire. This is another huge migration, so the numbers are going up quite a bit again. I'm excited to see what we build with such a large number of new people!

  • I showed up to the fediverse last September (had tours around years ago but never stayed). Generally speaking, the fediverse is a very chill and accepting place as long as you're not a dick, and stay respectful of others. It really does remind me of the web in the old days before we handed over control to like 5 companies.

I encourage you to explore beyond this one corner when you feel ready. Maybe none of the rest of it will interest you, maybe it will. But it's a cool thing we're building!

  • Do they give a reason why they won't?

  • Huh, that is strange. I wonder if that one isn't federating for some reason. I can find @canada@lemmy.ml but @canada@lemmy.ca turns up nothing. Neither does https://lemmy.ca/c/canada 🤔

Edit: I forgot there are issues with federation right now because of the cloudflare check. It should only be temporary. See Ernest's post

  • It's super new still and the dev is working on getting better instructions up on how to spin up an instance. After that they'll start popping up.

  • Sorry, my bad. I meant like Calckey/Mastodon (Twitter), Friendica (FB), Pixelfed (IG), Peertube (YT), etc. Some would be easier than others though.

  • It's in the works! You can see a demo of it on kbin.pub. There's a lot of things coming down the pike, but it's still early and the dev is doing a lot keeping the place afloat at the moment with the reddit hug of death 😅

I'm also looking forward to it, but in the meantime using the mobile site as a PWA works pretty well if you haven't already discovered that.

  • The devs of kbin and Lemmy have that on their list of things to do, make cross-instance links work nicer. But they have a lot on their plate at a moment, so it could be some time before that comes about.

  • Or kbin. Or if you're really ambitious, one of the non-link aggregation products.

  • Same, though I also like that I can interact with Mastodon/Calckey posts from here as well.

  • And my axe!

    🙄

  • Yeah, that's the beauty of the fediverse, you get to see the same content but I whatever way works best for you.

  • Yeah, that's not fair to say it's not worth it. Different strokes for different folks. With no algorithm it takes some effort to curate your feed, but because it doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean it's not worth it.

It's all the same information on the fediverse, and we all get to choose how we want to interact with it.

  • Try following tags in Mastodon to get what you're looking for. It takes a bit more work than Twitter since there's no algorithm, so you have to curate your feed the way you want it.

That said, I do have a Calckey and kbin account and go between them because I like a little compartmentalization.

  • Have you tried kbin? It lets you follow mastodon easier than Lemmy, so sorta best of both worlds.

  • To some extent. I've come across a lot of new people who think having one account on the fediverse allows them to log into any other platform. "I wanted to check out Mastodon but when I tried to log in with my beehaw account it said I wasn't registered!"

  • @community@instance.tld that's a more common way across the fediverse and also how you follow people, including those on other platforms like Mastodon and Calckey, etc.
