  • Same. Different app, but it was the same day. Once I realized my app would die, reddit was dead to me. I came to kbin a bit earlier than others but it was super dead in the beginning.

  • Oh wow. I didn't realize it had this capability. I need to dive into this now…

  • Yeah as a user you can block a person or a domain, which was the intended first step, not pre-emptive defederating.

  • Say what now? Signal, Whatsapp, and Slack all talking together without a problem?

  • Matrix is one area I've wanted to get into, but haven't managed to yet. How does bridging work?

  • I hate the tipping culture, and wish it would go away. But I'll still do it for sit down service as that's part of the deal. The ones that really get me are for pickup as well as the fastish food services where you go to the counter to order, prepay, you pick it up from the counter and bus your own tables. What exactly am I tipping for?

And why do taxis need tips? Or hairdressers?

  • With so many things in this country, the origins are racism. While tipping originated in Europe, it became popular in the States post-slavery as a way to not have to actually pay black people. Haven't shaken it yet.

And annoyingly, the ones who often push the hardest to keep tipping culture are the servers themselves as they can take home a lot of money on a busy weekend evening. Hopefully, we're getting closer to getting rid of it though.

  • Thanks! That was really helpful!

  • How does something like this compare to Obsidian?

  • That's in the same vein as "it's not the crime it's the cover-up"

  • It really does. I think it's one of the reasons the fediverse has remained a pretty positive place, without having to deal with all the ugliness all the time.

  • Currently, no. Right now you tell your new instance to expect a transfer from your old. Then you tell your old your new instance and if they match, the transfer begins. In your example, you wouldn't be able to do half the steps needed so it would fail. And since each server is unique, it would be up to them whether or not there were any backups or not.

  • In the mastodon/Calckey world you can migrate your account on one instance to a new account on a new instance and all the people following you will transfer and automatically follow your new account. So you don't have to be all "Hey moving to [xyz new instance] follow me there!"

That's something that's in the works for kbin and Lemmy some day

  • Remember to never feed the trolls. Block them and move on.

    • Syncthing - for sycing what pretty much amounts to /home between my mobile and laptop
    • Bitwarden - password manager
    • ProtonVPN - VPN
    • Trail Sense - Hiking tools, most frequently for barometric readings
    • Proton Mail - email
    • Coffee - keeps the screen on through a button in my notifications. Mostly used when cooking for recipes
    • NewPipe - YouTube and downloading
    • Droid-ify - Better UI for fdroid
    • Aegis - OTP manager
    • VLC - needs no introduction
    • Kore - remote for Kodi
    • Geometric Weather - simple weather app
    • Noteless - markdown notetaker. I've mostly moved everything over to Obsidian, but I like my grocery list here still...
  • Oh that's right she did! I've seen clips of Brennan before and have always wanted to watch, but never wanted another subscribtion... this might make me change my mind.

  • The problem with porn is that these instances are hosted by individuals who don't want the risk or headache of having questionable content on their server that they may have to answer for when something illegal invariably pops up.

That said, lemmynsfw.com does exist and you can subscribe to content over there. My guess is more will happen over time.

  • I nuked a 13- and an 11-year old account yesterday after commenting over then deleting each comment. I'm a bit sad, but if I'm honest, I've been wanting a reason to drop reddit for a while now. It just hasn't been the same in a long time. It's still young here, but I like what this has the potential to become rather than what might have been if things were different over there. Ever onward!

  • What was the mechanism for crossposting?
