  • Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a mobile phone?

I have a machine through which people can contact me at any time and set it up in such way that they cannot contact me.

  • A100 is 6 years old and is now sold at over 10k $. If you were paying a higher price it could be cheaper to buy the card, since the prices are low that is not the case.

  • Before torrent became viable and after Napster died, emule was the place where to download things.

You'd be really hiped up to watch a movie, you'd find it on emule and start downloading it. You would not shut down the computer for the following two weeks to allow the download to complete, you could indeed stop it and resume later however you were probably downloading at about 5 kb/s a 500 Mb file and would not want to wait months to have it.

You'd then place a dvd in your drive and burn the movie in there. You'd call all your family to finally watch the long awaited movie, place it in your dvd reader and start it.

That's when you'd find out the movie was actually a porn video.

That's how you learn to always check the content before burning it on a dvd.

And yes, a good 20% of movies were actually porn videos for some reason.

  • Published a library doing some very specific data processing. One of the algorithms I implemented was a bit too slow: it would take about a week to process data. I reckon implementation was a little bit sloppy, but I've been implementing a bunch of algorithms from research papers and this was pretty much the published implementation.

I asked Claude to analyse the implementation and check whether it could be improved, half an hour later I got a 26,000% improvement in performance with exactly the same results passing all tests.

Of course, I could have done that myself. But optimization had to go down to simd level; I doubt I would have been able to do that in less than a week of work.

  • Easy to set up, but still needs a 15k $ graphics card and electricity bill. The price you pay openai/anthropic is much cheaper than that for that quality of model.

Sure, you can setup a small model on a consumer graphics card, but the output will be considerably worse and the processing speed considerably lower.

For 240€/year you got a subscription to anthropic which will happily ingest a whole repository and process it in about one minute. No matter what latest model GPU you installed on your computer, you won't be able to do that.

Sure, this guy was able to run a 26B model on an old CPU: https://point.free/blog/gemma-4-on-a-2016-xeon/

But that was not easy at all and the speed you get is definitely not the same as the one provided for a very cheap price.

  • I LOVE the idea of flavours. I always add a bit of Linux mint to my rum distribution for a good Linux mojito.

  • You want encrypted communications? Don't you worry, just let me start netcat and you're good!

  • So, you know they discovered a material named graphene by pulling tape over graphite? Well some very evil people took that name to disguise a virus which takes over the phones of our customers and doesn't let the use our operating system.

  • It is a fair enough opinion to have. A dog is a dog, meat is meat.

  • Wild dogs are very scary

  • Generally grapes used to make wine are not really great to eat.

  • It does not take hours to change a law, but it is very quick to ignore a law and mow down a field. Now, whether the law will prevent them from doing that is a different thing. Someone would have to notice that they're going to build in a protected area, notify the police and contact them officially to notify the error.

At this point they may still ignore that, then you'd likely have to start a trial. If you're lucky and you start the trial before they mow down the field, they'll likely agree they made a mistake, pay for your lawyer and move to the field besides.

There's no need to change a law to fix something as simple as paying a couple lawyers.

  • I'll read the paper later, currently I just read the press release and I'm a bit baffled at these numbers.

I wonder how they came up with them.

  • Nit a kernel panic if it's burning.

  • TIL: uninstall docker on any machine with Claude code installed.

  • I have some code rotting somewhere in a repository where I was doing several moves to organise some stuff.

Ages after I wrote I realised it was basically this problem and a standard algorithm could apply.

  • This researcher clearly eats fries too often.

  • I suggest you attempt to fix your brain: it clearly malfunctions and this may indicate health problems.

  • That was 14 hours a day 6 days a week. It was non specialized jobs mostly filled by people getting their first job moving from the farms to the cities. Many people changed job within the first year. 40 hours work weeks were available. Regarding work safety, factories I visited were quite good, modern equipment and practices. I have seen machinery being used quite commonly which would elsewhere be considered highly specialized. Not sure about free healthcare, I did not get to need the hospital.

I'm not saying it's the best country in the world, but in general the people I met were happy and enjoyed a good life without many problems.
