Autocorrect hates me, I am sorry.

  • It’s a blessing and a curse. I’ll give you that.

  • Goto is surprisingly readable.

Loops don’t get labels. Labels are awesome. Sprinkle in some goto so you can use labels.

In languages like python inside a loop you have if condition: continue. Except continue means don’t continue, you skip to the next iteration without breaking the loop. That’s confusing as heck (and what is else doing on loops Guido???). if condition: goto loop is more honest.

I also like that goto is “take my stack frame and run that procedure instead”, which is kind of unique and cool in its own way, and impossible to do with most lexical scoping systems. It’s reliable zero cost function calling (if you can make your optimizer happy).

Everyone loves repeating “goto considered harmful” and “numbering should start at zero”, but nobody critically thinks about those things. Rules are made to be broken.

Oh, and the numbering argument is totally wrong… using one notation to advocate for another is silly. _Offset_ from zero, but _index_ by domain logic!

  • Ah, I guess it still just doesn’t feel like an awkward penguin meme, but I understand the duality.

  • Covid wrecked Reddit. It like double or tripled in size.

I would say there have been phases. I started using it around 2010. There was always an eternal September type complaining going on.

Kony 2012 and Rand Paul were the weird millennial activism years. They were kinda fun. Then there was the Ellen Pao years where the site started regressing and actively pissing off the community. The_Donald really fucked things up by blatantly abusing the rules for years.

After 2016 the site was getting too big and political (I mean, it was always political, but astroturfing took that election).

Everything since the redesign has been bad. Covid growth folded into the Pre IPO years. They banned the API and my local subreddit lost its best moderators and it never recovered.

And now it’s just garbage. Like that clickbait girl diaries sub is so clearly rage bait AI stories, it’s worse than relationship advice used to be.

Keep math class for the fun stuff.

  • It got pretty toxic

You can tell by the fact that Covid has a massive influx into tech and the platform rapidly collapsed at that time.

If your question was good it would go unanswered because a lot of pros abandoned the platform, if you were new it was too technical, and if you were junior your question was marked as a dupe and you were told to look at a 12 year old question from an ancient version of a library that’s not supported.

Sometimes someone would correct an old post to update it, but because it would never get seen they’d never bubble up to replace the comically old answers.

They burned the candle at both ends by not being good for newbs or experienced devs.

  • As a power-whiner that racked up points on low value “acshually” style response comments, I’ve decided to lock your questions and edit the body of your question for you.

Please come back when your question is:

    • Vague enough it no longer describes your issue or context
    • Specific enough that it doesn’t match the 50 other posts you read that failed to help you
    • And I roll a d20 and reach a value greater than 18.
