I'm interested in many things and I'm always side tracked by more things.

  • Is there a need to have a lemmy and Mastodon?

  • I enabled it because hey, why not? Doesn't cost me anything extra then some more time logging in.

I am assuming much of this is more advanced login security. Such as geo locations, you can't be in NY and CA in less than 5 minutes.

  • It's a pretty long read but overall it's very informative and interesting if IT history is your thing. Even better if you use text to speech.

  • This is also largely based on threat model as something is better than nothing. I don't believe the average person is going to, much less successfully, implement full layered security.

    If more people could just:

    • Use long passphrases
    • Never reuse passwords for more than one service
    • Use an encrypted password manager
    • Enable 2FA (Preferability via app not SMS)

It would solve a large majority of the issues. It's important to note that most stolen logins are actually from data breaches and malware. Before Proton Pass I stored everything in KeePass, we're talking many years. I have yet to ever have unauthorized activity or login on any of my accounts, I've even been lucky not to show up on any data breaches.

Sure, I got a "FIPS 140-2 certified encrypted USB" which really can just be done with VeraCrypt for FREE (Supply Chain Prevention), used for archive backups, but otherwise just not clicking on links in random emails or visiting sketchy websites.

  • I have no question on it's security, I've used their services for years and never had any issues. It's well thought out, designed and there is a full article on their website about the security of pass in particular.

Just be sure to use settings such as setting a pin to access the app/extension, not a bad idea to consider device security as well based on your threat model.

  • Yeah, in order:

    1. Standard VPN
    2. Protons "Secure Core" VPN
    3. No VPN

To ensure a fair comparison I made sure to manually select the same server for the test as well. It does depend on time of day but I've never gone below 200mb/s unless my internet goes out or lose power of course. I could probably make a new post for ppl to share theirs and include my mobile data connection speeds too.

It's also probably important to note I do have a paid plan with Proton, so probably better service than the free VPN option.

  • It's an on-going news story and case, it's an interesting one to me at least. I think there was some confusion so I went ahead and updated it.

  • Not a bad idea but there are flaws and this also doesn't seem to address the issue of pricing or availability.

    • So you can remove the battery, will you be able to buy one.
    • They could prevent 3rd parties from making batteries that work.
    • They could just not sell battery replacements.
    • They could add more parts needed, like seals, screws that strip too easily, that annoying sticky tape etc.
  • Only because of how recently they have implemented the ethics and fails pages on their website and in the video they don't really make it clear like "We realized how important it is and recently implemented a system to make our failures as public as possible a few months ago.". Just looks bad and makes me think it was planned, maybe not and like I said good points were made by GN. Skimming over the size difference between LTT and GN and how GN still got 3+ errors listed? I haven't done the numbers on the failure percentage but I don't feel it would be horrible.

  • Although good points were made, as I've been following this. I think its also suspicious GN is rather new with their ethics pages etc and it seems like it was a planned attack.

LTT does do corrections, but also GN alone has had 3+ in 2023 errors. Now account for the absolute size difference...

  • It's been mentioned several times. With lemmy federated content it's cached across all instances. Meaning, yes, the piracy communities content would be on lemmy.world servers if they don't block it. I'm just glad they can block per community.

  • Yeah that's an interesting read, thanks for sharing!

  • Yeah but check out the difference in the community rules, that's why.

  • I would also be interested in moderating this community. Pretty open availability (work from home), located in CST.

  • EDIT: Just checked my wife's phone and there is a search icon in the top right on iOS latest update...works great even for content. Are you running an older version?

I'm amazed the iOS version doesn't have a search function. That should be at the top of the list, they already have it for android.

  • Yeah, I figured I would need to go looking around and try to understand why you say "The population is benefitting". Thank you for the link, I see the EU has made some attempts at transparency, but 15 minutes looking around still can't find actual details on what exactly the expenses were on just by type of expense. Probably in there somewhere.

My original comment was in regards to yours "Facebook and Googke have had to pay ever ibcreasing fines", and I was commenting primarily in regards to that part. And your follow up was formed in a question so I gave more context. Not trying to debate, it's just crazy amounts of money, keeps happening and it's like it's turned into a new way of doing business that benefits government and companies.

Also, not part of the EU, so I'm largely focused on the US in particular. But I do appreciate the response and I'll personally check it out more. Didn't mean to come off as aggressively or combative kind of "debating" or otherwise just information seeking and I apologize if it did.

  • Was this one of the ones advertised for 10 year battery life? Could you maybe share the model number? I've seen 10yr life span, no battery replacements needed before, never really trusted it though. For safety devices I prefer hardwired with battery backup...ya know cause life's are on the line if it's needed.

  • Yep, after finding out about Verizon locking bios I decided to never by direct from carrier again. Plus, these alternative OS options need support. I run GraphineOS, it was quick and easy, never had an issue.

But google probably has been working on making newer versions of android closed-sourced, especially for OEMS. I say probably because there isn't any actual hardcore proof but imo the bios lock is just the start.
