  • Well, what planes are left in the civilian aviation industry? Russia cut itself off from the rest of the world after voiding all loans on planes within their territory.

  • Yes, and it is important that those doctors advocated for better patient care and that the desire to develop procedures are somewhat there. However, the medical profession as a whole seems to be less focused on procedures than others.

  • It isn't that much of a surprise. It has been over thirty years since the last long term conflict between two industrial powers, the Iran-Iraq War. A lot has changed, including the capabilities of off-the-shelf electronics.

Now that the global defense industry is seeing greater demand, especially in lower cost weapons platforms, a Raspberry Pi missile interceptor has gone from being a fun side project to a defense priority.

  • A combination of a few things.

First, the founder of modern medical teaching was a man who loved cocaine and created a fairly aggressive education program which fed into a profession without work-life balance. The profession hasn't self-reformed while cases where skilled labor has massive overtime is generally more regulated.

Second, the cost of education is enormous. Medical training for a doctor costs north of half a million dollars, so there is a high cost to training an additional doctor. Because of that, it is more cost effective to add additional shifts to existing doctors and nurses.

Third, a lot of doctors have a god complex and don't want to admit they are fallible people. Because of this, they resist a lot of best practices other industries; checklists for operations are a 21st century "medical technology". There isn't a push within the industry to study how people fail like there is in other industries.

  • This isn't really enshittification, though. People used to always have the right to self repair. That right got curtailed once it became a threat to profit margins.

    This is a law issue.

  • The Army Corps of Engineers has been trying to keep the city afloat for centuries, with a lot of levee works there going back a while.

The problem is that the old system has design flaws and no one wants to pay to upgrade the old system because of the cost.

  • At minimum, it was suggested to abandon large parts of the low lying city and build up on the bit of high ground remaining. The problem with that was that most of the city's poor lived in the low lying areas.

Turns out the cost of rebuilding left the low lying areas half abandoned instead of fully abandoned.

  • But less electronics waste is less profit. If everyone who bought a 2 year phone bought them every 4 years instead, that's a 50% drop in sales.

  • There's nowhere to expand to.

  • There is a question of timeline. Maybe in 10+ years, but not 2.

The early wave of layoffs in the sector "due to AI" were at the same time as the interest rate went up, pushing all tech companies to start focusing on profit. A lot of unprofitable divisions were cut because it stopped making financial sense to invest in products that didn't have day 1 revenue.

You're now seeing companies doing layoffs and claiming AI to either hide that development in their companies have stalled or they are taking advantage of their new shiny remote work platforms to push wages down by shifting workers to places with lower cost of living.

AI labor isn't worth its tokens, even when they are heavily discounted to gain market share. It might be in a decade, but not now.

  • It depends on the power density. A battery with the current power density but increased longevity isn't going to be as useful as you'd think.

A battery that is able to have the same power output as current batteries but last a century is going to be a weapon of mass destruction.

  • I like and subscribe to some of them. You just got to pick the good ones to follow, like someone who will tie in his film criticism to a season long plot arc about a talking coconut trying to gain clout or someone who will teach you what dub con hetero Omegaverse is.

  • The ones that really don't make sense are Odo and Kira.

Odo sometimes works as an advisor like Garak, but Garak is there for his skills and contacts while Odo doesn't really have that depth. At best, Odo can help with dealing with some Vorta.

Kira makes no sense at all. The Reliant doesn't represent Bajor ever and there are a lot of cars where Bajor wants some distance from Federation activities. Kira is also likely an intelligence leak; not herself personally but her reports are likely going to be the interest of every major power and Bajor likely doesn't have the best security.

  • Ebola isn't going to affect Trump's support with his base. Hell, measles probably won't.

  • Probably Hegseth. RFK hasn't done anything that makes Trump look weak. The Iran War, in contrast, makes Trump look really bad.

  • I feel like Buck Rodgers could get rebooted to today and do well.

  • They come with different preconceived notions about your friends than you do.

  • I watch adult animated shows, but I wouldn't call them mature.

I don't think it says that much about me order than my current media consumption doesn't really include ways to easily watch kids' cartoons.

  • Yeah, those kinds of people are horrible to work with. I know you figured out how to make this work thirty years ago, but they built it into the program twenty years ago.
