  • Team Fortress 2 players are kind of the three at the same time ?

Silly and weird, fairly chill and nice overall. But the bot crisis showed an AWFUL side of this game too...

  • So I have a story for you. I own a fairphone 3+ for a little more than 5 years now.

Recently, while doing the dishes, my phone accidentally slipped in the sink. I protected it with a phone case and a screen protection, but still, panic ensued.

I removed the battery as fast as possible, dried it up as best as I could, restarted it, and it worked just fine.

Well, most of it at least. The jack port took some damage but ended up fixing itself (???) and the usb- charge port refused to charge the phone unless it was tilted a specific way.

Doesn't matter, I ordered a new usb-c module for less than 30€, and replaced it (i'm not really good hardware-wise, but fortunately, it was pretty easy). Now it works like a charm.

I feel like an event like this would have been a death sentence for most other phones, and even if it wasn't, my clumsy ass keeps dropping my phone, so it might have been even sooner.

So far, this phone just refuses to die. It might be slightly outdated and buggy at times (apparently it got better in the last iterations), but it is still very much usable with no critical failure yet.

  • well yes it is

    Nord

  • So, setting up an entire server might be overkill for the amount of data I truly want to never lose (passwords, some pictures, some important documents, maybe some music if there is space left) , but asking a relative i see every once in a while to just keep a drive or even a USB stick in a desk somewhere is probably the easiest and reliable option.

    Thanks for the suggestion !

Recommendations for data backup solutions ?

  • I don't know why but I think the linux mint "woosh" when switching workspaces is hilarious

  • Right now i'm on mint, but when this issue happened, i was on fedora 42.

But if bluetoothctl does not work either, maybe it's another issue that i had (maybe the drivers or something)

  • I had the same issue some time ago, and found that connecting with bluetoothctl in the terminal gave way more reliable results than the visual interface

Kind of a solarized dark theme

  • okay, but why did they used a guy beatboxing to illustrate their statement ?

  • Alright i'll try to go with things that has not been submitted yet.

    • Ace combat 7 has consistent bangers. Also project wingman in the same style, slightly less consistent, but the best tracks are absolutely amazing (showdown and redline are in my opinion)
    • I did not play Mighty Switch Force and Mighty Switch Force 2, but this game has really good tracks
    • ULTRAKILL is not really out yet, but its soundtrack is already amazing
    • Turrican 2 has some pretty damn good chiptune tracks
    • VA-11 HALL-A which also acts as an amazing background music to work
    • Tekken tag 2 / Tekken 8
    • Distance (this one is probably a bit personal though)

Aaand i'll stop there otherwise this will be a way too long post

  • That's true, and i'm not trying to say that Ubisoft is a good actor here, I just think that the example of BattleCore Arena quite unusual and ironic here.

That being said, that's probably because the game did not receive a lot of attention from the higher ups at Ubisoft, so the devs could make decisions that are respectful towards the players.

  • Good point, I did not check if my router has already some built-in system that could let me connect to my home network with trusted devices from outside

  • Tailscale is very tempting, on one hand it should provide a pretty good layer of security without too much thinking and it is "free", and on another hand, it's a business solution, so it is probably not really free...

Thanks for the answer anyway confirming that Tailscale is pretty easy to setup !

  • Okay, so that's pretty much the setup I had in mind. Good to know there is not much need for an extra step for security, thanks for the answer !

Well, I guess that would still be vulnerable to DDOS attacks, but that would just prevent me from accessing my cinnamon apple-pie recipe from my self hosted recipe manager for some time. A bit mean, but not catastrophic.

I wondered if there would be some other attacks that could compromise my machine with only a wireguard setup, but that's a good sign if there is nothing obvious.

What are your VPN recommendations for accessing self-hosted applications from the outside?

  • Ironically, I think Ubisoft has a good example of a multiplayer game with a good end-of-life despite not reaching its sales expectations with BattleCore Arena, where the last update allowed P2P play after the servers went down. Meaning that the game wasn't totally killed off, even if it was thought as yet another service game, which is always appreciated.

That said, given the lack of marketing that was done around the game, it was perhaps a "not too expensive game that could maybe work on a fluke", where Ubisoft's lack of attention potentially left the devs quite free with their game. Devs who thankfully respected their players and made good end-of-life decisions.

  • Still going strong since the update last year, i think i only saw a hacking bot once by playing regularly in the last year.

From a player perspective, bots are not a problem at the moment. TF2 is back to its usual chaos, so that's good.

  • that looks funny, i might give it a try, thanks for sharing !

  • probably Distance

  • Inscryption

Shoutout to the player who sent me "Dr Smart!", that saved my game

Moving dual boot partitions + switching to another distro ?
