    What online subscriptions do you have?

  • I'm trying to avoid most subscriptions. So I rent a small VServer and a VPS and run a little Proxmox server in my home. That is around 13€/month, including electricity for the Proxmox server. I could combine them and save a little bit of money, but currently I avoid the hassle of doing that.

    But that gives me E-Mail, Nextcloud, offsite backup, a website, HomeAutomatization with HomeAssistant, a PlexServer to stream music and movies, paperless and more. So: Say no to expensive subscriptions, do it yourself.

  • Apart from the whole issue with it being financed by a ruthless dictatorship: Aljazeera hasn't got reporters on the ground in Switzerland. So they are just using some of the usual international news agencies for this. And therefore there is no reason to use a news site financed by a ruthless dictatorship, you can just link to all those other sources reporting the same or you might want to take a look at swiss sources, who might have more insight into the issue than an arabic news channel financed by a ruthless dictatorship

    • It has the map corpus from OpenStreetMap, so one of the best in the world
    • It works offline - just download the desired maps onto the device
    • That makes it really, really fast. Google Maps is slower
    • You can also use it in areas with bad reception. I'm using it for hiking in the woods where there is no cell phone connection available
    • I really like the UI - they are f.e. better at displaying house numbers and street names than Google.

  • This just shows how Trump completely destroyed normal politics. It does make sense for a country in Ukraines situation to talk to both parties and to get both parties on board. Then the plan could move along regardless of who wins the election in Nov. This would have been possible in the past, with George W. Bush, Obama, Clinton & all other presidents and was actually done for other conflicts and topics in the past. Trump... is special.
