  • The red circle (or line) was actually needed for once

  • Good point yeah

  • They couldve just put the box under the sign on the left...

  • Controlling the software is an integral part of the ethos of self hosting. Literally right in the first sentence of the wikipedia page.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-hosting_(network)

Self-hosting is the practice of running and maintaining a website or service, as well as own servers for e-mail, IM, NTP and so on, using a private server, instead of using a service outside of the administrator's own control. Self-hosting allows users to have more control over their data, privacy, and computing infrastructure, as well as potentially saving costs and improving skills.

instead of using a service outside of the administrator's own control

Plex is outside of the administrators control.

  • They merely have control over a user interface that can be replaced.

If you have no control over it, that means plex isnt self hosted. The data is self hosted, but not the interface which is all that plex is at the end. You are basically just donating your hardware and data to a shitty company at that point.

  • Yup, many laptops even have a sim card slot so with that you could even configure it to fall back to mobile data in case of a power outage that also takes out your homes wired internet.

I have a thinkpad at work that has been in that role for years. Its the central syncthing node for like 10 other laptops and computers. It then also does regular backups to off site storage in case anything bad happens with the syncthing setup.

  • I would argue that prices are easier for consumers to compare so in order to get a good baseline for a review you should try to find a GPU that has similar performance and then compare the prices between the two. That gives you a more useful insight into what you get per $

  • I see. What phone do you have currently? LineageOS for example has support for a huge list of devices.

    https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/

There is also a version of Lineage that comes with microG preinstalled and it supports all the same devices.

    https://lineage.microg.org/

Installing a custom OS isnt super hard but if you arent familiar with using a terminal and such it might be a bit daunting of a project.

  • It only work in a society where people arent expecting to get killed by the cops. In the US its reasonable to fear for your life during any arrest, so people tend to panic and run. In this case the potential danger of trying to run is just so much higher than getting arrested.

  • So just the default android that came with the phone? microg is usually used in combination with custom android versions like LineageOS, CalyxOS, eOS or GrapheneOS. So if you want to degoogle your phone you should look into those. Be aware that without google services certain banking apps will stop working because of bullshit security theater by the banks.

Microg isnt an addition to your OS its a complete replacement of large parts of the core systems of the OS.

  • Idk what you are trying to do here, but microg usually comes preinstalled with custom operating systems. You cant practically remove google services from an existing phone without rooting it and replacing the entire OS. Its not just an app that you install onto a normal google infested phone. You can manually install it but its much more complicated than just installing an apk file.

    What OS are you using?

  • Jeannette Rankin looking real smiteable right now

  • Or as an always online syncthing node, but that basically makes it a homeserver.

  • Oof yeah that makes it even worse. Cringe for how established of a site tomshardware is.

  • I feel like both parties were just doing this for the lulz

Cop couldve rammed them a hundred times but simply kept slowing down every time he got close. I guess this was the least violent outcome so good job lol

  • Kind of weird review, they didnt even try to find a GPU that it is comparable to. Looking at this table, its probably more like a 4050. The thing to note here isnt the performance right now, its the progress compared to like 2-3 years ago. If they can keep the prices at this level and keep improving performance at the same rate, then in another 2-3 years they will outperform everyone in terms of price/performance ratio. Also they have a typo here in the table they misnamed the GPU.

  • Maybe a mental health condition yes

Yeah duh... Its a space made by and largely populated by computer nerds
