  • It depends. Children are naturally curious. I think it comes down to how you deal with that as a parent. Our son is interested in pretty much everything we do. As much as possible, we take the time to involve him. Tell him what's happening, why we're doing things a certain way, etc...

    I assembled the NFC reader together with him, and he did question what it was for. Obviously he doesn't understand the technical details behind it, but he understand that the box recognizes the cards he put on top of it. That's enough for now. Maybe in the future I can dive a little bit deeper into it.

  • Love these ideas! Might make a V2!

  • The Plex deep links will automatically resume. TV shows are tricky. For that, I use the Plex integration of Home Assistant to play a random episode. It's supposed to be super powerful, but I haven't got it to work reliably yet (which is why I didn't focus on TV Shows in the blog post).

    service: media_player.play_media
    data:
      media_content_type: EPISODE
      media_content_id: |-
        {
          "library_name" : "TV shows",
          "show_name": "SHOW NAME HERE",
          "shuffle": 1,
          "maxresults": 1
        }
      enqueue: replace
    target:
      entity_id: media_player.plex_plex_for_apple_tv_apple_tv

  • It's definitely level. Guess it's the perspective + the fact that it's a curved TV.

  • Exactly this!

  • Yes, 30min in the mornings, 30min in the evening.

  • Thank you for the nice message! I don't have any plans to sell these though. Have enough on my hands with 2 kids ;)

    You can buy pre-made readers from Adenno: https://adonno.com/tagreader/ He uses the smaller NFC reader that I want to use in the future.

    How I Built an NFC Movie Library for my Kids

  • About a week

  • Thank you! Finally managed to quit vim!

  • Reddit @lemmy.world

    Reddit keeps your IP address for at least 4 months!

  • Lemmy.world Support @lemmy.world

    Spam communities being created by user LMAO

  • And a followup question: wouldn’t it be more efficient for big instances to use WebSockets to federate? Making a HTTP request for every action your users take seems unnecessarily wasteful.

  • Amazing blog post! Been reading the ActivityPub spec and found it rather lacking. It’s only when you add WebFinger and signed messages that things start to make sense.

  • +1 Or perhaps lottery numbers? I’m not picky

  • He’s destroying his company (and a great website) for no good reason. Then again, I did lead me to discover Lemmy. Not the same yet, but it’s growing on me!

  • Reddit @lemmy.world

    I want to debunk Reddit's claims, and talk about their unwillingness to work with developers, moderators, and the larger community, as well as say thank you for all the support

  • Same here (love Pages and Workers). Just wish their support for top level country domains (particularly .be for me).

  • Shoutout to @roofuskit@kbin.social for a very detailed and helpful answer. For some reason I can't reply to your message, so I'm creating a new comment instead. Hope you see it ;)

    Wow, thanks a lot for your detailed answer and suggestions. You kind of convinced me to go for Roborock!

    The fact that local control works (after cloud setup) is great. I read somewhere that the robot will reboot if it's been disconnected from the cloud for a long time, but that's fine for now. Good to know that there's a backup solution in the rare case my internet connection goes down.

    I hope one day someone will make a great vacuum robot with an open-source firmware. Imagine having something like ESPHome for vacuum robots. Wet dream!

  • homeassistant @lemmy.world

    Any suggestions for a good robot vacuum + mop?
