  • As much as I love Larian and BG3, you'd have to have a really narrow definition of "major" if Larian isn't a major studio since at least DOS2.

  • You have to zoom in to fully appreciate it. Crazy level of detail!

  • As a long-time Gnome user, my frustration is less with the overall design philosophy, which is fine. It's with the tendency to remove features and the devs unwillingness to acknowledge usage patterns that deviate from it. Don't like the change we're making? That's because you're using it wrong!

One of my favorite examples is the removal of the "type-ahead" search in Nautilus, Gnome's file browser. You used to be able to quickly jump to files and folders by typing their names. The devs at some point decided to remove this feature and replace it with a recurrent search that requires a CPU heavy background process for indexing and would search the entire file tree for files whose name (or contents) matched what you type. It was orders of magnitudes slower than type-ahead and basically made it impossible to efficiently navigate with the keyboard. The feedback was overwhelmingly negative, but the feature never came back. I eventually switched to a different file browser (first Thunar, then Nemo).

Having a philosophy is all good and well. The point where it turns into dogma is when you stop listening to user feedback and start declaring everyone wrong who disagrees with it.

  • The comic definitely made it more confusing by choosing the main (non-intersecting) road of a T junction to illustrate this. In most countries, if this road splits into two lanes, the left-turning lane would split off, and the right-turning lane would go straight.

Edit: Apparently, this style of junction is more common in the US. In Europe, I've only seen this kind of junction on highways, but that would be without traffic lights and with a much longer turning lane.

  • Me too! My favorite method is to give the dough a quick fry in some oil before adding the toppings and transferring the pan to the oven. Gives a nice, crispy crust for an otherwise fluffy bottom.

  • This is just translated to today's standard English. Future English obviously will become a tonal language, where all expression is based on different intonations of the word "skibidi".

  • I'm starting to think the chicken comparison doesn't do justice to the emptiness of Trump's threats. If he ever had to fight a chicken, the chicken would win.

  • Kudos to granny for being so positive about it and acknowledging that the cops have to follow up on the calls they receive, but if some anonymous tipster can bring down a SWAT team on some grandma's house without any kind of check being triggered, that might indicate that there are some problems about how these issues are being handled. Other people may get out of this with much worse than a funny story to tell when two dozen cops decide to visit their house at night.

  • That's real good value for a piano.

  • Brexit was so bad, Farage had to change the name of his moronic fucking party.

  • Me too. Without conditioner, my hair is a floofy mess and too coarse and tangled to even brush properly.

  • Nice, I got one of these too! Using it mainly for 2FA at my workplace, and it works really well. Easy to set up, even for a security noob like me.

  • People should be more appreciative of all the things I've almost done for them and totally would've done if they hadn't been so unappreciative.

  • According to this source (German), the average gas consumption of privately-owned cars in Germany in 2023 was 7.8 liter per 100 km. So this 30 year old car, which is not all that fuel-efficient by modern standards, is still more efficient than what people drive today.

  • I don't have a rational reason for this, but I think anthropomorphizing machines makes more sense on an emotional level for dumb machines than for smart ones. Kind of like the brave little toaster, or Wall-E going against the space ship's autopilot. I guess part of it might be that we see the limitations dumb machines have and it reminds us about our own flaws and limitations, which makes us empathize with a Roomba more than with Alexa or ChatGPT.

  • Some companies have mechanical watches in the 400-500€ range that can go for 200€ used. I have a Junkers that I bought used for 200€ some years ago, and it's got a glass bottom (other models do, too). But honestly, I wouldn't make this a criterion, because you rarely see the back, and skeleton watches can sometimes look tacky.

  • I guess the calculus portion of this is to write the separation as a function of time, s = √26*t, and then realize that the rate of separation is the same regardless of time, because the first derivative is a constant.
