Ideologies that require harming others do not have the right to be promoted. Nazis, the Confederacy, etc... It's illegal in the United States to call for the death of someone, it is considered assault to threaten the life of someone. But its not illegal to promote Nazism, which calls for the deaths of millions. And its not illegal to fly the flag of a traitor nation built on the idea that humans can be property and thus snuffed out at any moment by their owners.
I think 'we' as people who value controlling the software we view the world through should advocate and help fund more alternatives. And that starts by raising awareness. I don't think fighting with people who point out the issue is a constructive use of anyone's time.
It's still a problem. I didnt say we had other options right now. But pretending it's not a problem isn't going to fix it. Do you really want to rely on those companies for your browser engines? Mozilla is at least an alternative to Google, but a tenuous one. And Microsoft taking over development of either of those isn't an improvement.
Pedantry isn't really an argument, its just pedandtry. Those engines rely almost entirely on the resources provided by Google and Mozilla's development of their broswers. Open source is all well and good, but those engines are not primarily maintained by the community, they're maintained by employees at Google and Mozilla.
I kind of assumed you would reply with a lack of understanding of the resources it takes to maintain those engines and keep them complaint with web standards.
Good analogy, what happens if Microsoft decided tomorrow that windows was no longer a profitable venture and stopped maintaining it?
Relying on Chrome and Firefox for alternatives to Chrome and Firefox is still an issue. Especially with Mozilla, if they folded the community would not have the resources to maintain Firefox.
I need to tack on a moderator blurb to this post. I received a report from Rimu that this post doxxed them. While it does appear the original post contained Rimu's full name, I do not believe this qualifies as doxxing.
Posting someone's full name typically would be doxxing, but Rimu has completely subverted their own expectation of privacy by publicly linking their full name with their development work on Piefed. Their username is even their real first name. I do not believe you can doxx someone who already did it to themselves.
This information is publicly available, and it was made so by Rimu themselves.
Not only is this not doxxing but under these circumstances it smacks of a half hearted attempt at censorship. Rimu made themselves a public figure. You cannot post their address, or other personal information, but their name is fair game by their own choice.
I read the comment and thought commendation was the word. Read an article that called it a proclamation, then the article said the proclamation commended her...
The fascist regimes also use free speech to promote their fascist regime.
But yeah, its an idea on social media, not a legal text.
