Digg refugee now Reddit refugee

  • This by no means a expert explanation. But as I understand it peertube and owncast are video sharing sites that operate much like lemmy but for video. So people start platforms ( like a instance on lemmy ) and then other people can join said platform and watch the videos , however like lemmy you can watch videos across all platforms ( I assume much like lemmy as long as the platform admins allow ). Both peertube and owncast say they are Fediverse projects and as such it should be possible to access the videos on other fediverse enabled applications although not sure how well this in implemented.

    info

    peertube specific info

I have to say as youtube alternatives I think they fit the bill best as it is free to watch , open source and quite an elegant solution , clearly early days but none the worse for that imo

Under the hood I believe it is a distributed load system ( a bit like the BBC's Iplayer ) but that is beyond my pay grade.

    EDIT

BTW peertube = youtube alterative owncast = twitch alternative tilvids = peertube platform

  • No problem connecting with jerboa here but can not login on my laptop, have deleted the cashe and site data to no avail Edit spotted the reset pass fix, bit of a messy solution but heyho am back

  • Can I just quickly mention that I for one really appreciate the work done by @ruul to keep this instance working as well as it does , thank you.

  • I have read the responces , and I applaud the general tone of both sides of the discussion. I have to just say that without view exchange , and expressly with view suppression , those who feel suppressed become even more intrenched. I for one learned from the debate.

  • Just wanted to say thanks Ruud for all the work and expense. Your diligence is obvious. Thank you.

  • "stupid lemmings" and "narcissistic sociopaths" sounds like a popcorn drama

  • server ragequit, that's a tale that should be told

  • Oh that would be amazing again though the infrastructure would have to be able to cope. Probably would need to be hosted on the most stable instance and close signups while it was on, and absolutely coordinate orher instances so they could be prepared.

  • Those do not appear to be written by him, but will do some more digging. However open exchange of views is wise in my opinion even if they are those I personally do not agree with. Edit Rightly ho, although I clearly have not read all the material on display (openly public btw) it is obviously the repository of someone who is willing to explore the far left politically , but the essays that might be by him(some are not accredited) are not on the subjects you mentioned, those are accredited to others. Now this dev might or might not agree with this stuff, they might be a politics student I can not say but I doubt anyone has asked. I am not sure it is particularly relevant in this thread anyway.

  • I have seen the conspiracies posts as well but assumed they were just reddit shill accounts spreading disinformation, no one I know has taken them seriously. It is interesting to see this point of view, especially the "this day would come" bit, for me I sort of knew something was wrong , but it is like your local pub slowly being taken over, you do not want it to be true so you ignore stuff you should not.

  • I guess that is well worth keeping in mind , coming from the cesspool that is reddit everything seems so polite here by comparison.

  • That is promising , I was hoping we are not polluting the pool , so to speak

  • All these points are correct imo

  • this is the way

  • This is me , I logon once a day search api protest and add lemmy positive posts and maybe a lemmy post in one of my fav small subs. about 5% of my social media time. I expect to stop in july

  • This, Refreshing 😀👍

  • I think you might be falling for some propaganda yourself😀

  • Correct me if I am wrong but I think the lemmy Devs run the .ml instance and they have specifically said the do not want to be in control of a large general instance as they have enough on there plate just refining the code base. Lemmy.world is I believe run by someone with a track record running a successful masterdon server so it looks well placed for growth atm

  • Clearly a case of "can't see the wood for the trees" corking work there 👍😀

  • Also useful ammo if you get attacked by the current anti lemmy stuff going around.
