I've never really followed X (nor Twitter), Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, etc. so I basically live under a rock. Sometimes I ask dumb questions to try to understand people a little better. Apologies if my questions inadvertently offend anyone. I mean no harm.

  • lol gross

  • I don't get having kids before making the world at least a decent place.

That seems like a very tall order for a single generation, and for such a large area (worldwide).

If everyone thought this way, we'd probably be extinct by now — or at least massively declining in places where birth control and abortions are widely accessible, since every birth would be an accident.

(To be clear, I can understand why one might not want to bring kids into the world in its current state. It doesn't seem unreasonable)

  • When you say something simple and someone else attacks you over some imaginary meaning or intent.

    Totally agree.

    Neurotypical people are unwell.

Wayyy too broad of a statement to agree with. I've seen this behavior from both neurotypical and neurodivergent people.

  • Humans were consuming so much horse paste that there was a shortage?! That's wild.

I guess I never really knew why so many people associate ivermectin with horses. I would not have guessed that 😆

  • Probably. Over the years, I've noticed that some words just seem to catch on amongst people on social media, and it's like their meaning expands and it gets diluted over time. Words like "Nazi", "trauma", and "gaslight" used to carry more weight in the past too.

I suppose it doesn't only happen with negative words like those though. I remember when the word "literally" lost its meaning too

  • Heh yeah I used to think that about IEMs too.

My headphones are the HIFIMAN Arya Stealth Magnet Version.

Don't get me wrong, I like the way they sound. They're better than any other headphones I've had. I have no buyer's remorse over it — but only because I didn't pay full price.

  • ~$800 headphone setup. My then-employer paid for more than half of it, so I splurged a bit. Got refurbished planar magnetic headphones for ~$500 and an amp for ~$300. I later bought a balanced audio cable (I don't remember the price, maybe $20—50).

It sounds good, but I've also been down the Chi-Fi IEM rabbit hole before. I think I could get similar results from $150—250 Chinese IEMs.

  • Why?

  • Chinese AI labs kinda seem like a plot twist in LLM evolution. Their models are quite capable now. They're not at the levels of American labs' flagship models yet, but the gap has been narrowing quite a lot.

When OpenAI and Anthropic models are only marginally better, but much pricier, then I would think they'll gradually shed users (followed by investors).

Ironically, I could imagine a possibility of Nvidia "saving" American AI. If they can take the lead with Nemotron (in like a "post-OpenAI/Anthropic" future when open-source models dominate), then maybe they can survive on chip sales... Though they'd probably have to compete with Chinese chips at that point.

  • Operation: Thanksgiving with Gam Gam

  • I know I'm being pedantic, but machine learning has been around for many decades

  • Can I ask what they took? It's none of my business, but I guess I'm morbidly curious about what they were desperate to have, and why burglary was a better option than, say, shoplifting or something

  • Yes, and all of their roast levels are darker than what you'd get from most specialty roasters

  • That wasn't about dark roasts, that was about Starbucks' coffee and roast. There's a big difference. Starbucks goes darker than most specialty roasters' dark roasts.

Also, "burnt rubber" notes often come from robusta coffee. Robusta is cheap, easy to grow, and has a long shelf life. The darker it's roasted, the less it tastes like burnt rubber[^1]. But Starbucks claims that they use 100% arabica. If true, then it's almost impressive that they made it taste like that.

[^1]: There are some amazing, exceptional robustas, but you won't find them in commodity coffee or Starbucks

  • Prioritizing "experience" over coffee itself is not new for Starbucks. Even before the $9 price tag, their prices far exceeded their (low quality) coffee because they're selling the experience.

Coffee roasters sometimes refer to them as "Charbucks."

  • Thanks. It's an odd accusation after simply asking "How?" (I was genuinely curious) but I appreciate you clarifying their response. Upvoted to counter the downvote 🙂

  • It's possible that I'm just a dumbass, but...

    1. I don't see the part of the article that explains how you will hold them to their word. Am I overlooking something?
    2. This is the first time I've seen "sea lion" used as a verb (though maybe I can google this one)
  • How?

  • I think I remember similar headlines for PS3
