  • What was in that Mordor terrain?

  • TIL you could also use aluminum powder:

Foamed concrete differentiates from (a) gas or aerated concrete, where the bubbles are chemically formed through the reaction of aluminum powder with calcium hydro oxide and other alkalies released by cement hydration and (b) air entrained concrete, which has a much lower volume of entrained air is used in concrete for durability.

For those that would like to test that recipe as well, I found it here from that video:

Lightweight aerated concrete dry mix design

Basic recipe for non autoclaved lightweight aerated concrete (aircrete) with 600 kg/m3 density:

To make non autoclaved lightweight aerated concrete you need:

    - Ordinary Portland Cement

    - Limestone powder (particles up to 0.05 mm)

    - Aluminum powder with water coverage 15 000 cm²/g and more.

    Dry mix formula:

50% cement (by weight) + 50% limestone powder (by weight). I mean for 1 kg of dry mix you need 500 g cement and 500 g limestone powder

Mixture formula for 600 kg/m³ density:

1 kg of dry mix 0.65 liters of water 1 g of aluminum powder for 100 kg of dry mix you will need 65 liters of water and 100 g of aluminum powder

    How to mix it:

    1. Add water in the bucket

    2. Add dry mix in the water and mix it for a couple of minutes

    3. Add aluminum powder and mix it 1 - 2 minutes.

    4. Pour it in the mold

Did anyone try to use aircrete as plaster instead? I wonder if it might be viable too

  • If I were to guess, social housing is probably making a big difference there, as rents tend to remain lower and people have more money available to spend elsewhere

  • I'm no specialist, but I'd say it is all about exposure.

How often and meaningfully they interact with people speaking different languages makes it easier for them to absorb that information. Is grandma the only person that speaks spanish with them when they visit once a year, while everyone else only speak in english? Yeah, it is going to be harder for them to learn spanish

  • Are you syncing the files between the Xbox <> Steam deck?

  • Second thought: In history of humankind, we had all sort of sizes of societies - from small groups of 8 people up to thousands and more. It turned out in our history that humans always need someone who collects, aligns and represent a group of people - a leader. There never was any community that relied on many representatives that shared roles and reponsibilities.

That is not true, see Pirahã people for example. We have to keep in mind our historical biases, as many written records come from hierarchical societies, so egalitarian or collective models are less documented or even avoided, as that might go against their interests (E.g.: Missionaries trying to spread their religion which needs people to obey their hierarchy). We might think centralized authority seems inevitable, but it’s not the only way humans have organized themselves.

  • How did it go? What did you end up doing? Pics or you never fixed it :P

  • Why are they being delisted? Is that a requirement when a studio closes?

  • It is not exactly solar nor moon light, but there has been some experimentation with radiative cooling, which allows solar panels, with attached thermoelectric generators, to convert the night sky into a power source, but it is in the milliWatt range for now

See this paper for reference: "Nighttime electric power generation at a density of 350 mW/m² via radiative cooling"

    https://www.cell.com/cell-reports-physical-science/fulltext/S2666-3864(24)00676-3

Summary:The coldness of the universe is a thermodynamic resource that can be harvested for renewable energy generation. Theoretically, on the Earth’s surface, the maximum power density that can be harvested from the earth’s thermal radiation is around 6,000 mW/m². However, most experiments conducted so far have demonstrated a much lower power density in the tens of mW/m². Here, we maximize the power density of such an energy-harvesting system by selecting efficient components with optimal sizing, minimizing heat leakage, and optimizing the thermal radiation spectrum. Our prototype achieves a sustained high power density of 350 mW/m² at night, and we also demonstrate a power density at the 1,000 mW/m² level using an above-ambient-temperature heat source. Our work here shows that the coldness of the universe can be harvested to generate renewable energy at the power density level that approaches the established theoretical bound.

  • You can extend lettuce freshness in the fridge if you add its "root" sides to water in a jar, then bag and tie it with a plastic bag. It can last an additional week or two before it gets soggy/damp

  • I think there are many examples, from the top of my head, I'd say Macedonian Expansion under Philip II, Napoleonic Wars, Second Punic War, Great Turkish War , Second Boer War, Caucasian War, Franco-Prussian War, Gulf War

  • I'm not a specialist, so don't take my word for it, but as far as I could understand, those are not microinverters, right?

In that case, even if only one panel on string B is being partially shaded by snow/tree/leafs/debris/etc, the whole string will output the same amount as that one panel, which might explain the difference

Whereas on String A you probably don't have anything shading any of the panels

    See this image for reference:

edit: How was it last year? or did you just install this system?

  • TIL about dammuso. They even have rainwater collection systems.

Now I'm curious about their cisterns and how different or similar it might be to the ones used nowadays
