  • The problem is so severe, in fact, that the aforementioned translation layer had to be updated specifically to handle Starfield as an exception to the usual handling of the issue.

"I had to fix your shit in my shit because your shit was so fucked that it fucked my shit"

  • I think /r/opensignups closed after the blackout

  • There will be a moment of collapse. Companies can only bring so much money to the top and bleed most people so dry, before living becomes nearly impossible. And then shit will go down. Probably reminding the top how deals where made before unions.

  • Hey, das ist exportierten Kulturgut. So froh das Erleben zu dürfen!

  • Yes, and that gap in financing will make them haul their asses. As they now have to get the money and have already given the benefit out. And for the meantime, they can probably scrape together money from a few other places. Maybe a road will get delayed for a year or something.

  • Many schools in Germany also do not have their own pools. You will be transported on a bus to the closest one.

  • Yes, if it is done in the right order. Make trains cheaper first, then add to the cost of airlines. Knowing politics it will be "We will now tax flights with an additonal X% and use that for alternative travels". Then, 10 years later, the "alternative travels" will be the same price but flying will be more expensive. I just do not trust politics anymore at all if they do not put the "lowering costs" part first.

  • You might be misunderstanding my comment: They can increase costs if they want, but they should take the costs away elsewhere. I have no problem with a train ticket being 10€ and a plane ticket being 120€ instead of the other way around.

But this will lead to a plane ticket being (as an example) 80€ and the train ticket continuing to be 120€. While they do make more money off of 1st class and stuff, they still need to make a chunk of the cost off of 2nd class. Especially on more local (e.g. inside the country or just one over), where there often is just one class in the plane (And maybe there is business).

  • Oh nice

Instead of trying to lower prices for alternatives (e.g. trains), they just try to jack up prices for existing forms of transport, so that the other transports now seem cheaper. How about taxing the shit out of airlines and using that to get trains down to the price of what airlines charge now?

This is just again getting the mid- and low-income layers to pay for shit.

  • I really like these scooters and bicycles when visiting a city - I do not need to bring my own stuff to the city and I can pick up whatever makes more sense. No more daily bike rentals for a way too high price which I need to return to a specific location at a specific time.

Tho, this stuff also attracts a lot of, for a lack of better word, dipshits, who will just throw these things in the middle of the walkway and call it a day. With this not getting better (either because the authorities and providers aren't doing a good job or because the people even do not care about fines), this will happen in a lot of bigger cities. As people can rightfully not be expected to deal with this shit.

  • As far as I know, Fairphone uses "conflict free" materials. This is more expensive and harder to get than just searching for the cheapest seller of any material (e.g. lithium) and just going with them. In theory this should help against child or prison labor.

Additionally, they aim to pay everyone in the chain a living wage. Which is also more expensive than just using foxxcon to produce as cheap as possible and telling them to "just add more suicide prevention nets".

This is a good thing, but makes cost go up quite a bit I would assume. Additionally, the SoC is probably more expensive than the Snapdragon equivalent, as it is build "for industrial uses", which normally commands a premium.

  • The Fairphone is always just such an odd decision for me. On one hand, I would love to have a phone with long support and swappable parts. On the other hand, I hear so many complaints about the software and wait for major version updates that I am not enterily sure if it really is a good buy.

The price is pretty okay, a bit less than 100€ per expected usable year. This is in line with other manufacturers. Also, the biggest bull of the expenses probably comes from the way the manufacturing and materials are checked.

Is there any sense in installing a custom ROM on the phone to get rid of the software issues?

Or maybe there will be less issues this time? From what I heard some of the problems where caused by Qualcomms support windows being closed and the company actually updating everything themself. Which might be solved by using a SoC with somewhat decent support now.

  • If you are used to it, probably. I know that my pixel 4a is slowing down after 3 years. But I am just used to the speed, so it is okay for me.
