  • My car is a 2012. It doesn't have any of the stuff you mentioned, though I wouldn't mind having a backup camera. I'm also fine with any safety features required by law since those aren't surveillance--it's the privacy-invasive stuff that will keep me driving this car until it's no longer repairable. I put very few miles on it per year now that I'm retired, so it should last a long time.

I'm still interested to see if any replies here have alternatives for bypassing all the surveillance stuff. I saw an article on how to disable/remove the phone-home modem in a particular brand of car, and it was very complicated. You had to disassemble and remove a whole bunch of stuff just to get to it.

  • Bread is bad for birds, don't give them bread. Not only is it not nutritious for them, it expands and fills their stomach in a bad way. Better to do a search for "what to feed crows", and check several sites since there is so much slop out there now, rather than ask random people here.

  • Sorry, I don't view CBS or visit their website, and especially don't provide profiling info to them by answering BS questionnaires. I suggest others follow suit.

  • These are the first waves of people with integrity being uprooted.

Oh, we're way past the first wave.

  • 60 Minutes is dead. The other presenters (and writers, etc who don't agree with new mgmt) should quit now if they have any principles and self-respect. Besides they're old and rich, why would they want to stay on anyway? Show some solidarity/integrity.

  • RFK Jr. has immediately flown to the area to play with, and possibly eat them.

  • Cicadas' eyes are more to the sides of their heads than that.

  • Well, I didn't think that alone automatically made it easier, though I do think that no conjugation plus the amount of familiarity in the vocabulary are major factors, not to mention using the same alphabet. So from the admittedly short amount of time I spent on Haitian it felt like a similar difficulty to French, but then I probably didn't get beyond the basics enough to be exposed to the higher difficulty level of syntax you talked about.

But yes, syntax is huge. I spent years on Mandarin, even with a willing native speaker friend to help out, but finally accepted that it was beyond my capabilities (being already in my 40's at the time didn't help either). And it wasn't even the tones so much; the measure words/classifiers you mentioned weren't much problem either. It was indeed the syntax (except for simple straightforward sentences). Often I could recognize every character in a sentence and know its individual meaning, but still be at a loss to understand the overall meaning of the sentence. And with verbs, Haitian clearly marks exactly which tense/aspect is meant, in a system that an English speaker can understand intuitively. Mandarin not so much!

  • The Dems are in the minority in the Senate. That's the whole reason why Alito would retire before the midterms, while Repubs still have the majority and have the votes to confirm a replacement.

They must be worried Dems could win the majority in the midterms and would then take control in January and be able to stop a replacement if he waits until then to retire.

  • Thanks for those examples! I guess I was just thinking of things like verb tenses using markers instead of conjugations.

  • I'm not sure why they have Haitian Creole as more difficult than French. The vocab is extremely similar to French and the grammar is easier. So I'm wondering what aspect of it they think is more difficult than the languages in Category 1.

  • If only these people had figured it out after his first term. Oh wait, they weren't harmed personally in his first term.

If someone said, "I was dumb, I didn't know he was going to cut off aid to starving people, didn't know he was going to send masked thugs into the streets to beat, kill, kidnap and disappear innocent people, didn't know he was going to start wars, didn't know he was going to betray all our allies and destroy any remaining drop of goodwill toward the US in the world, ... etc"

Then I'd say, "yes, you were dumb, very fucking dumb, exceedingly dumb, but welcome to humanity. Some things are permanently ruined because you were so fucking dumb but now let's start picking up the pieces and try to create a better system than the one that allowed someone like trump to gain so much power."

But it's never that. It's always, "I didn't know he was going to hurt MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

  • “It’s okay to be wrong. You made a mistake, it was a bad choice, but it’s not the end of the world."

    Uhm about that ...

  • $20s. Anything higher, some places might not want to give change for them unless you're paying an amount close to the denomination of the bill.

  • Oh thanks, I guess I should have read the title a little more closely!

  • OK dumb question but I don't have a smartphone, so: You're browsing the web on your phone and this pops up. It says "Use your phone's camera app to scan this QR code". So obviously a phone's camera can't scan its own screen. And if you switch to the camera app the QR code is no longer on the screen anyway. So how does your phone's camera app read the QR code? Does it have a button to click and give you 5 seconds to go to the screen that's showing the code or what?

  • So those humans will go buy the cheapest they can find

    Hell no I won't.

  • Same! Except mine does do SMS text and has the other flip phone stuff like alarms, timer, calendar.
