  • Personally I'm in a similar situation with Nim-lang. I like the style and performance, it hits a spot for me that other languages do not*. I wouldn't call it "easy" though, as you still have to think about typing and other structure stuff (but not to the degree that you'd have to deal with for other languages). Being less popular of a language is probably the main issue here (there are many options for bindings, but you may find yourself waiting on something specific with smaller communities).

TBH I haven't used it as much as I should, having other issues. The last thing I did though (sweeper clone), I finished it and it made me feel better about my possibility of understanding complexities.

    * I guess newer changes to Python and LUA might make a difference, though I still get the feeling those are not just-enable-to-be-reasonably-fast options.

  • I've got a 5770 and for team green a GTS 450. I don't feel like testing them, too bad it's unlikely I could just transfer them without shipping (SW Michigan).

I don't really care about money, but I could use something AMD-Polaris-or-better because my 1050Ti is now on legacy drivers and I haven't updated because of that.

  • Yeah, and 20in wheels. Even 250w makes a big difference to allow less exhaustion (/longer distance).

I made sure to get a bike with gears so I could actually put the effort+speed in, and got a decent price on it (decently below the $1K ground floor) but unfortunately it is now discontinued so finding something similar may be difficult (also, telescoping handlebar stem).

Unfortunately I still don't ride as much as I should. Mostly there's not much around, but also add things like weather conditions, mosquito/tick fears, limited by how long my cold water lasts, and various other things that I lack (tire patch kit, durable+breathable clothing, storage because common store options use incompatible mounting).

  • I'm somewhat similar. I don't think it's impossible* for me, but it's easy to run into issues and lose motivation or simply lack viable ideas for learning projects. Currently stalled due to multiple system-related issues**, and chilling effect of AI (copilot).

I have a YLoD PS3 I've fixed a few times before many years ago, though it likely was a capacitor issue that was only fixed accidentally. Don't feel like spending money on caps/cooling stuff etc, not set up for soldering. I have another PS3 that currently works, not bothering to set up for firmware stuff for that either (slow internet, no easy way to monitor progress).

    * I completed a sweeper clone months ago (in the one somewhat-niche language that I actually like) and that actually went great but I haven't been able to share it. So haven't done anything since then

** I probably need to use a different distro but not convinced by any, and probably need a better GPU to sidestep legacy driver issue (which could help w/updating my current setup) but everything seems like a side-grade or overpriced or both

  • Personally, I'd like to see technology go for a more symbiotic route. An extension of humans... but not copies, not AI, not always-online/proprietary etc.

Give me more stable microbiomes, more enzymes and similar synthesis, extend my nervous system with other types of life (extract pollution from trees for fun and profit). They will be part of me, I will treat them better than how many treat their livers. I could even probably play DOOM without training!

  • Even when it comes to personality disorders (or other brain stuff) I would say there's still a distinction between need and want.

A lot of cause for isolation is circumstance (and difficulties relating to socializing), so it's very likely that a lot of terminally-friendless people would disagree with OP's (supposed) attitude on this.

  • Beware of poor fitment though. I got some cheap wired ones years ago (from Amazon), didn't work so well because they had bad contact and no mechanism for adjustment. Kinda also needed a preamp, though if contact were perfect maybe that'd matter less.

I also am not so sure I'd trust them to be waterproof, and anything that is would likely have a heftier pricetag. That, and I'm pretty tired of everything having batteries.

  • Just never clicked with me, I guess. The workflow/layout, how certain things like modifiers often create mesh errors.

I mean Blender is perfectly fine for my uses, but I started with Maya (many years ago) and I think I preferred how that did things (and most things being nodes, though TBF I haven't looked into Blender's geometry nodes). Admittedly I also can't deal with Maya's bloat (or cost), and even the pre-Autodesk Linux version seem to be more data than modern Blender.

I also like some of the older tech like vertex colors and NURBS. Those aren't impossible with Blender either, though certainly don't seem top-drawer. For VC it takes a bit of setup (create it, materials, get it rendering properly in viewport shading modes) but the startup file helps with that... though I'm also relying on that for an ordered/set-width color palette, so I'm not sure if there's an easy way to change that in already saved files (and actually changing the vertex colors of the object is another, since it isn't just a color index that can be updated).

  • Yeah, I use Blender now but it's a bit painful for me to use. So it's a common thought that some old software might be usable for a simple workflow... if it could be done with proper hardware utilization and not too much overhead.

SGI made there was no windows or Mac hardware capable of this sort of thing

Yeah. This was my thinking, that SGI-workstation-specific software would be more capable (hardware-support-wise) than Windows-specific software.

Though I'm guessing the architecture difference is just as much of a problem even if someone could work at that low-level.

That is assuming you are wanting to do architectural visualization?

I'm interested more for animation/gamedev, that's why I phrased it (3) as 'model packs' because I could see many of the large empty scenes shown being useful as a starting point for custom environments (even if it doesn't completely make sense, I'd love to put some bespoke digital creation inside a long-forgotten mall).

I mean, you're not wrong but lack of density (/mixed use) is part of the issue. That and rail infrastructure is used a lot more for cargo than travel. However, it should not be an excuse continue with car reliance.

  • HSR is the easiest example of rasterizing Flash content being a bad idea, because there is just so much content. Even just the Sbemails compilation (1-200) is 10 hours, and for a DVD-quality video (480p) that's almost double the size of the HSR collection that I have (2000-2009 from archive org).

The site does work via Ruffle (even the menus, though some links seem broken) and they still make new ones (sbemail-210-robots, backtoawebsite) with Flash versions. There is also an old.homestarrunner so you could probably run this with a browser that still runs Flash, lacking one I'm not sure the exact URL to do so via standalone or even if the links will properly work there.

Local is still probably best, though still a mess with so many SWFs.

  • Nvidia supports 13 year old hardware and newest kernels with 580

At some point when running your 14 year old GPU

Pascal (GTX 10 series) and Volta (expensive workstation stuff) cards from 8-10 years ago are forced to 580 too. EDIT: and to be clear this is an issue with all of the 580xx versions of packages, specifically because Arch put them into the AUR (though this directly isn't OP's issue).

Having a 1050Ti... I like the idea of an AMD (Polaris+) card, but I don't really want to buy a side-grade from the internet. I got really good deals on my other hardware (combo deals from 2019) so $100 more would actually be a decent chunk. Really just seems to me that the GPU market is behind due to crypto->NFTs->AI.

You might be right on FOSS drivers, but they seem to be still rough-around-the-edges whenever I look into it. In multiple aspects (performance, feature/technology support, segfaults). It might be true that I may not notice in some cases (lighter applications), though a 1050 Ti doesn't have the headroom where the performance could be cut in half and not result in noticeable instability.

  • I'm still using a 2016 card (1050Ti). If somebody could send a Polaris card my way, it'd save me the headache of having to deal with updating my system to legacy drivers (and from the AUR with my not-very-fast internet? no thanks Samuel). Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with this performance (and yeah, ignoring new/bloated games) and the GPU market seems pretty wrecked by the crypyo->NFT->AI market (on top of companies largely abandoning low-end).

GPU aside I did build a Ryzen system in 2019 because the sale prices were great (and it was a huge leap in performance from my 2011 hardware), so that's something. Still happy there, too.

As for why I went nVidia in 2016? I had ATI driver issues way back in Windows, so that may have clouded my judgement on AMD options a bit longer than it should have though.

  • I don't really care about money, and every part of modern employed (USA) life just seems like a scam. Car dependence+insurance, stagnant wages, housing/rent cost, debt traps, yearly tax burden (the filing process, not payment in general*), health insurance, captive markets, consumerism that doesn't even seem desirable anymore. Which has only gotten worse over the years.

The only employment I've had was an unpaid internship at a car dealership (not really related to what I was interested in at all), which I would say was definitely a net negative when it came to my chances of entering the workforce.

    * except that it goes towards harming people. Our post-2016 government is very Twilight-Zone feeling, so that does not inspire confidence when it comes to joining society either

If physical or mental health issues bar you I’d consider that different.

This is a big part for me, though I'd imagine it's a common reason behind being NEET/Hikikomori. Don't discount it.

    Do you have bills?

No, I don't buy services. I barely buy things at all.

Do you have autonomy in general?

I can go where my 2 legs and 2 wheels can take me, but where I live there I don't really know much of anything within a comfortable distance.

I'm also limited by where the trail goes and how much cold water I carry, being in a somewhat rural area (and not knowing anyone) makes that even worse. So I'm not even really going the distance these days. Not really prepared for long travel, either.

Whats the living situation look like?

Boring, living with parents. Nothing most days. On top of typical rotting, I do try to help family when I can. Basic chores (emptying dishwasher, sweeping, unloading firewood from truckbed or carrying wood bucket in winter, pulling garbage bag out+replacing, peeling potatoes for dinner etc), recently I helped carry fence panels. In the past I have kept the house+garden when parents were gone. Today I pan-roasted myself some carrots+summer squash.

I do 3D model stuff and programming (somewhat niche language), though I still lack motivation for practice/projects there. I actually finished something simple a month or so ago, but don't want to share it on Github (because copilot training) and can't even share an export with anyone because problems with my system that I haven't bothered to fix.

    Is the term offensive?

Not really. There's definitely worse said, though that stuff probably gets thrown at everybody rather than NEETs in particular.
