  • I’ve had it for most of my life. Luckily, mine only comes in near silence, but my perception of the ringing is very loud. Basically I always have something around me making noise. I fall asleep to YouTube videos, and I read and work to music.

  • Delaware, Inc.

    A Delaware Corporation

  • It was also used for someone known, but whose gender was not known or being hidden. Shakespeare used they this way. From there, it’s not a great leap to use they to refer to someone without a gender.

  • At this point, I am 100% positive you are sea lioning. Just to let you know, you’re not very good at it.

  • I’m all for neopronouns, and we do have them, but that would be even harder to teach people than the plural they. (Not to mention, it would face a lot more backlash.)

  • I didn’t say they don’t do charity, I said the percentage of their donations they actually spend on charity would be criminal for a non-profit.

The child abuse and coverup problem is absolutely not limited to the US:

Whether one thinks the church holds back science is mostly a matter of opinion. It seemed like you were asking for opinions, so I offered mine. If you were looking to debate, I’d maybe reword your original post so you don’t come across as sea lioning. The relationship between the church and science is complex, and to me, the bad outweighs the good.

  • I can’t speak for all of Lemmy, but I am against the Catholic Church for a number of reasons. They hid child abuse for decades (centuries?) by shuffling around the offenders, essentially protecting them from any consequences. They accept donations with the explicit stated reason to perform charitable acts, but the percentage they actually spend on charity is so small it would be illegal in a lot of places if an actual non-profit did it. They hold back science. Though it’s not a requirement, many practice circumcision, which is essentially mutilating a child. I could probably keep going, but that’s enough.

  • The way I put it to people who struggle with it is imagine you’ve invited a friend to dinner, and they ask “Do you mind if I bring a friend?” If you want to know what to cook, and you ask your friend, “Sure, but are they allergic to anything?” your friend will understand what you mean. Because you didn’t know the gender of your friend’s friend, you used “they” as a singular pronoun. Now just imagine you don’t know the biological sex of your daughter’s non-binary friends. It might help. :)

  • OP isn’t asking about they as a personal pronoun, they’re asking about they as a generic (non-gendered) singular pronoun. That’s exactly the usage that is centuries old.

  • That’s crazy, cause an upside down laughing devil looks like a great white shark.

  • You’re supposed to apply peanut butter to half of each slice of bread, then jelly to the other half of each slice (so they’re mirror image), then put them together. That way both sides have equal amounts peanut butter and jelly, and it’s 180° radially symmetrical. The best sandwiches are radially symmetrical.

  • True, lol. xD

  • Not even close. I’m lucky to remember the main plot points and the main character’s name.

  • Is that Nick Cage’s face on Michael Scott?

  • Did a bunch of trees go extinct because of it? I haven’t heard of that.

  • I don’t use AI for anything.

Oh wait. I have started using it for something. I use it to look over contracts as a first pass and ask it to point out any red flags. I still read the contracts, but it can help find obvious unacceptable terms.

  • They were the first life forms to alter their atmosphere extensively enough to wipe themselves out. There will be a second soon.
