is beehaw related to lemmy?

  • Hah that makes a lot more sense. For now I think I'll stick with the independent containers approach, I have zero familiarity with synology so I better take it one at a time. But usenet sounds pretty interesting now, might give it a look just for the kicks haha

  • Holy smokes this is extremely informative! I'll start by pulling in chunks of your config and learning from what it gives me. As for plex/jellyfin again, the only reason I'm (slightly) biased towards jellyfin right now is precisely because it's not as easy to set up and hence gives me more learning opportunities. But I'll keep an eye out for plex offers regardless - sometimes it's nice to have something that just works. But thanks a lot for such a thorough response!

  • I'm just using a bunch of independent docker containers behind nginx. But this now sounds a lot easier than I had in mind since a few apps I deployed were painful in the rear end when setting up correct folders. As for usenet, I'd have the same question as the other reply - in my mind it's an archaic (lol) network protocol which I have not the slightest idea about

  • I tried to follow servarr head-first, but of course got lost in the jargon since I had next to zero idea of what I'm dealing with. But all these comments (and trash guides, which I somehow never encountered) seem to be great pointers to get me up to speed hehe

  • Haha I feel like I'm way behind anything you mentioned here. I had a bunch of old mp3 files lying around, so for now all I do is upload old/new mp3 files I procure into my nextcloud instance, then use an autosynced nextcloud folder to fill navidrome. I always knew this is a very fragile solution, but your comment seems to be a goldmine of stuff to try. Thanks!

  • So this is a part I've stumbled on for now. I do host a bunch of other stuff which I share with a few friends, so using tailscale was, for me, a bigger hassle than worth. But now that prowlarr requires a VPN connection for security, I'm on the crossroads on whether to push tailscale for everyone or figure out VPN for just prowlarr. But I suppose that's what gluetun is for? I'll take a look into it anyway, thanks!

  • Good to know I'm not stupid for feeling a little intimidated by the arr stack XD

Actually, I think I will follow this and start with just sonarr to get a feel for it first. I have barely any clue of what 'format' means here, so clearly I'd be better off taking a small step first. Thanks!

  • I do have like a bunch of old stuff from can't-recall-when. I setup jellyfin while scrolling through the awesome-selfhosted list, but never got to really get it to work because of lack of content

  • Ha! That sounds like the exact thing I was looking for. I'll go through the guide and see how well it turns out. Thanks!

How does one get started with the *arr stack?

  • Looking at the screenshot, I'd guess it sorted by the ASCII values of the characters, so processes with capitalized names come up first. Still not the ideal sorting, but at least makes some sense.

  • As someone who tried to self-host it like a month ago (and seemingly still hasn't got it fully working), I'll just write out the overview of what I've done and let you (and others) comment on how correct and feasible it is.

Since my ISP doesn't allow me to get a static IP address, I rented a VPS connection and made a wireguard tunnel from the VPS to my computer. This tunnel forwards traffic at all the necessary ports between the two machines. I really wasn't familiar with all the necessary components for an entire mail server, so I chose mailcow since it packages everything into one single software (well, more like a bunch of docker containers). Another reason I went with mailcow was that I could easily find a github tutorial for how to set up mailcow with wireguard tunneling (it's a bit outdated IMO, but the changes are minor). Mailcow also gives a nice portal interface listing out all the DNS entries you need to put in place to get it working perfectly.

In the end, I still see a few incoming emails getting dropped and reception time being an hour or so, and I'm not sure if it's a problem with my tunnel or DNS or something else. But overall, I'd say it was much easier than setting up all the individual services myself.

  • But does it make jack jork?

  • No love for Star Wars? :(

  • Yup it seems crazy to me how deep insights one needs to have to be able to, say, connect the dots between compression and machine learning. And now it looks to me like he has done a lot of the foundational work in these fields. Super cool stuff

  • Too lazy to check, but is this the Rivest from the RSA algorithm?

  • Since you're seeking for answers within physics buzzwords, you're missing a lot of nuance which is causing you to come up with nonsensical theories. For one, the wavefunction doesn't exist 'in' the particle, it is the particle. A wavefunction collapsing is what causes a particle to show up in a specific location (going by the most prominent interpretation of the wavefunction); as long as the wavefunction is non-zero at more than one location, the particle exists in all those locations.

Equipped with this knowledge, phrases like "a wavefunction collapsing in such a way that it absorbs light" or "change the composition of atoms" make no sense, so I'd suggest you to rethink your assumptions, and, if possible, not look at quantum mechanics as a magic black box that can explain everything a mind can conjure up.

Has anyone checked out marginalia search?

Ok, how do I start self-hosting?
