    Why do you think this is a solarpunk approach to governance? Are there examples that work like that? What could go wrong? And so on to give it more depth and not just be a "news" link

    Only half agree here. I get the low effort posting issue but it's not like I expect every solarpunk to explain every win every post. It's like saying "add why do you think it's solarpunk if someone stops Israel". Anticapitalism is one of the basic values of solarpunk as much as not liking genocide, racism and so on.

    It's also true that it's much easier to spot a genocide rather than the practicalities of capitalism...

  • We kinda agree I think. But we see differently what I posted probably. It's true that it's not about the tech itself but the development of tech; at the same time, licenses and engineering won't build solarpunk alone...

    I would ban news from almost the whole server to be honest, I just don't see this as one but more like a communication from me to other solarpunks to say "yo people we've got another tech foundation we can use to not give money to capitalism"

    In the latest rework of lemmini before the shutdown I just reimagined the main community as a solarpunk hackernews to ease this

  • to be honest, what i need is an open notion, so a lot of the stuff i want from joplin is just not gonna make it

    but, regarding the apps themselves, i for sure would like a better experience and overall polish. Even obsidian is just a note app markdown based, but the experience is just better with gestures, shortcuts, nested tags, tags sidebar and so on

    so maybe i'd say that i'd like joplin to be an open obsidian 🤔

  • The public records from the companies that sell stocks are not so useful anyway.

    Obviously I'd prefer to know more about Proton spending, but the examples made in the video like "I want to know how much proton has spent on that YouTube ad" are just impossible. You can open an Apple shareholders report and check it yourself.

    Still, I'd rather have no capitalism rather than capitalism + financial transparency reports. One day they will sue you if you don't pursuit more profit. Not gonna happen with foundations.

    edit: I misread the comment and answered like you were referring to openai and google and not mozilla and wikipedia, sorry

  • It's like saying Mozilla is a for profit or Wikipedia is a for profit.

    Having a for profit company under the non profit ownership is just to ease bureaucracy.

    This doesn't change the fact that the ultimate owner is the foundation and so there is no shareholder to pressure etc.

    A counter argument to this could have been exploring the OpenAI case and how it's trying to get out of the no profit model. But for some reason privacy YouTubers never make that much research into stuff... Almost like they are just earning on that engagement that you get when not being boringly nuanced :)

    The YouTuber also states that 9 privacy policies are bad and tbh Proton could probably unify some of them but the thing is that they are actually different: they said in the past, for example, that privacy laws for VPNs in Switzerland are better than those for emails, so it's pretty ok to have 2 different privacy policies (I wonder if they could at least unifiy drive, mail calendar ones). Google can have just one because it's simply "we gather as much data as we can" for every service they have.

  • That's not happening to me... I've installed it from brew and there is no need for me to do anything weird except the occasional "this app was downloaded from internet so you allow it" when updating from brew (stuff that gets updated natively doesn't even ask this)

  • I think people are retreating more and more into chat groups. Those people are not on reddit anymore, they are probably in discord related to certain products hobbies etc.

    I really wonder how long until we will start seeing the effects of not having more updated general knowledge in the public web, but oh well 🤷

    On a side note, after all, the web always had a bias and a lot of fields never had easily available public discussions...
