  • What piece of media thoroughly disappointed you?

  • I read the novelization by Arthur C. Clark and it made way more sense than the movie. I never understood why HAL went crazy, but the book explains that it was given orders to be honest with the crew, but not reveal the purpose of the mission. HAL naturally concluded that he couldn't lie to a dead crew.

  • Disney is popular. Final Fantasy is popular. Put them together and apparently you get something that sells, but for me the concept is less like chocolate and peanut butter and more like peanut butter and pickles.

  • Not a single title, but any incremental “clicker” game. What’s the point? Seems like “hurr durr number go up”.

    I'm pretty sure idle games started out as explicit commentary on this exact idea, distilling the very essence of video game progression into concentrated form.

  • I love building my own worlds, and sometimes I catch myself building head canon around unexplained or poorly explained aspects of games I play, but sometimes I get the sneaking suspicion the fans put way more thought and effort into their fanon than the devs did to the official canon.

  • The "You earn every defeat" concept of Soulslikes is part of their appeal. I haven't beaten many (Hollow Knight, Tunic, and if you care to count it Metroid Dread) but the feeling after fighting a boss, walking away, wondering if I should just quit altogether, then coming back a few days later to beat it is amazing.

    The genre could absolutely use a shot in the arm regarding setting and tone. You're always always wandering around the bleak ruins of a fallen civilization on a possibly hopeless quest. Tunic adds some interesting stuff with its use of knowledge-based progression (I both love and hate that writing system).

  • Kingdom Hearts. Goofy and Sephiroth in the same room together breaks my brain, and not in a fun way. I played the first game when it came out on PS2 and decided it wasn’t for me.

    I’ve seen story breakdowns of the other games on YouTube and figured I’m not missing anything. Lots of setups and plot hooks that don’t go anywhere or go somewhere stupid.

  • addendum: Some casual googling seems to suggest that hacking or jailbreaking it to expand its functionality is, for now at least, out of the question. The only workarounds I've seen, as suggested here, are getting a developer account to install unsigned software. I'm not going to do that.

    I don't want to ask permission to make a product I payed for work for me in the way I want.

  • I don’t think the top level domain of the site has much to do with its platform decay, but yeah the ads are beyond obnoxious.

  • I want to make a small apologia on behalf smart glasses. I have an Orcam MyEye (pictured) which uses computer vision to provide a number of assistive features. It lets me know who I'm looking at, and will attempt to guess age and gender. It will read text that I indicate by pointing, and it identifies currency. I believe it also has a UPC barcode database but I don't remember. It does this completely offline.

    Admittedly I don't use it all the time since it has to attach to a glasses frame via a magnet, which is somewhat uncomfortable, and the battery makes hummingbirds look good (I think it only lasts an hour) but it proved instrumental when my eye was hemorrhaging after a surgery and I had to travel alone with even less vision than I normally have (my doggo was amazing, too).

    So it's not all dystopian.

  • I miss rage comics and advice animals. I miss when memes had a shelf life measured in years. I also miss the golden age of YouTube in 2009-11, when creators were starting to find their feet. Stuff was genuinely entertaining as opposed to just quaint, but it still felt authentic and personal.

  • I generally upgrade my PC every five years. This usually means new motherboard, CPU, and RAM, and this last time a case as well. The last time I did it was in 2019, not counting the brief window where I was able to purchase an RTX 3080 at or near MSRP in around 2022. Not only am I overdue for an upgrade, my needs have changed pretty drastically since 2019.

    Back then I was all about RGB, and sought to create the quintessential unicorn vomit PC. While I still like the aesthetic, I now know that maintenance of all that RGB can be a hassle. You need to manage more cables, and components on LED strips can fail, ruining the look of the case. The case is made of mostly tempered glass, but It's now on the floor, obviously not ideal. The PC isn't the only rig on my desk now (ham radios are also called rigs), and the PC has to share space with three or four of them, all with power, coax, grounding wire, and control cables of their own.

  • I can't give you any deep comparisons, but I'll say that PieFed has more features but feels a bit less responsive. PieFed also has a user reputation system which many, including myself, see as problematic. There are claims, including in this thread, that the PieFed Devs have incorporated censorship of views that they don't like on a software level, but I don't see how they could manage that.

    The Lemmy devs hold very controversial opinions in support of China and Russia, and the instance run by the devs, lemmy.ml, strongly reflects those views, but as far as I can tell they haven't baked them into the code. Where it gets sticky is that donations to support Lemmy development also fund .ml.

  • You may not have anything to hide right now, but who knows what people will think in 10 years, or who will be in power, or what a hiring manager may think after looking at your socials. When you post something on the internet, it's like you're screaming it on your front porch through a megaphone while all your neighbors are recording.

    I used to hold the same opinion, but that changed after hearing a report that Facebook knows more about its users than their own IRL loved ones. That was sad, creepy, and dystopian at the same time. While I still don't think my online activity would ruin my life if it got out (I don't even use profanity) I still silo my online activity from my meatspace self as much as possible.

    Not disappointing as in bad but disappointing I couldn't make it work for me. I bought a 3DS XL on two separate occasions. I got horrible headaches after playing, even with the 3D completely off. I think it was the low DPI coupled with the fact I had to have my nose almsot touching the screen. I'm not sure what possessed me to try again. It wasn't even a different model.

    But I missed so many good games. I'm tempted to try emulating them, DS as well as I missed that too, but I'd hate to resort to piracy, even though there aren't any other ways to play DS and 3DS games on a big screen.
