  • I choose to blame platforms for vile intents rather than users for ignorance. I don't see awareness of politics of technology as obligatory for all authors (even less for users), but creators of those platforms know damn well what they are doing.

  • My main beef with spotify is their attempt to privatize and monopolize podcasting.

Spotify offers audio hosting and a large userbase, but does not provide rss. A few people I like are trapped in this, and I have no way to listen to their shows apart from using spotify. They refuse to understand that this is an issue, just like youtubers are ok with lock-in.

Podcasting infrastructure is not monopolized yet, like video is. It is even bigger problem for me than underpayid artists.

So boycotting, and if you undersrand that, you should too.

  • Started to argue with myself: if the concepts of following people and topics did not mix well, how could fb reach a couple bilion users? I myself silently hope for Bonfire to succeed, even after seeing Friendica, Hubzilla and almost forgotten Diaspora. Maybe it just wasnt done rght in FOSS so far?

  • Mastodon (and others a la twitter) is actor-centric, where focus is on people.

Lemmy (and others a la reddit) is topic-centric, where focus is on common interests.

These two are very different approaches that I can hardly see mixing well. I thought of "microblogs" of mbin as a "nice to have" but unnecessary functionality. Did it actually lift off?

  • I do not like either, as you get locked into their app ecosystem. No standard imap and no self-hosted archive is no freedom for me.

I went with puelymail.com, one of lesser known cheap standard mail providers, and am very content for a couple years already.

  • I want access to good art produced by good artists in any style. Not to reproduce anything.

  • So far what I found:

My router has an option to block internet access by MAC address, which is even better than by IP.

LAN mode works via wi-fi, so no cables or flash drives needed.

Also Orca slicer is almost the same as Bambu studio, even supports printer's camera. Feels even snappier without an account and integration with "store" or whatever that online stuff is called.

Got more interested in trying out VPN now, so I probably could observe prints from a laptop in any location.

Not as bad as I feared, not as good as it could be.

Best way to prevent Bambu A1 mini from updating firmware?

  • It is complicated. I follow almost 500 accounts often producing 50 toots per hour. Nobody should spend that much time to catch up with all. My coping tools are:

    • Making lists, including one for important accounts I don't want to miss. Sadly I cant find a way to get notifications for those.

    • Resisting FOMO. Remember, mastodon is people-centric, not topic-centric like Lemmy. I don't try to use it as news source or catch all hashtags I care of. Just treat it as a space to casually look what people are talking about.

In general I think that backlash against algorithms went the wrong way. We poured the baby with the water. We should have resisted their harmful use, lack of transparency and user control, rather than the very idea. Controlling what content shows up first and setting your priorities is a good thing. Users should have this power, not corporations and not even admins.

  • My setup is self-hosted FreshRss and FeedMe as a client on Android.

I'm not fully happy with this, as my feeds are often design-related, but FreshRSS provides no alternatives views to long text line listings, e.g. no card, masonry or grid views, which proprietary clients usually have.

FeedMe is much better, so I mostly scroll feeds on my phone.

  • If by "seamless" you mean that wireless data speeds can soon match locally attached storage, there will still remain a political question of autonomy. We might some day have light terminals without storage or even serious processors with all the data and work still done in our cellars garages and and attics via 8G or whatever grade connection. If there will be enough demand for market and politics for devices to be available, of course. So yeah, I think, culture and politics hold the answer.

  • I was lucky to find https://purelymail.com/ which fit my budget and needs - primarily supporting multiple domains for my family and personal projects without extra costs.

  • You might get surprised - I looked at default KDE, Gnome and docs for a couple WMs. Yet my question is not "how do I get different backgrounds", but rather, "how come is this the usual thinking"? Why? Are there serious drawbacks technically or from UX perspective that I didnt think of?

  • No Stupid Questions @lemmy.world

Why virtual desktops always have same background?

  • Why downvoting? It is good for community to know this, even if content is far from cheerful. Expressing criticism in comments does more for public awareness than making the message less visible.

  • Given most of water comes from public facilities it is structurally just unsanctioned and ineffective transmission of power from shared pump to private generator. Would be a simple energy theft if you didnt pay for water. A waste of water and energy anyway.

  • I also just use KDE connect on windows to exchange needed files or clipboard. Devices need to be on same LAN or VPN during exchange. Pausing PC media during calls is a nice bonus.

For syncing photo gallery and Obsidian I use Syncthing.

  • average working age?

  • not sure about peertube audience size, but afaik it does have a serious subsystem of resource sharing.

  • If I understand it right.. it will be much more costly to host videocentric platform than other types of content. A serious proposal for sharing the burden of hosting will likely be vital - through funding or decentralized storage/processing. Havent heard about that yet.

  • One other reason I imagine is to establish a single family name, especially with children in mind. I'm not sure it actually works better than a double damily name, but it probably seems so to some.

  • Just my emotional reaction: I am amateurishly selfhosting for more than ten years with only basic linux knowledge. This training is probably more focused on pros and general web development than self hosting. In my imaginary perfect world self hosting would be a common skillset taught in a secondary school.
