  • We know there's a growing number of people who use their phone as their primary and only computing device. And the success of the steam deck is proof that a "good enough" experience can attract an audience. It is also likely that Valve is planning for a future where the Steam android app will be capable of installing and playing games locally without the 30% Google tax.

None of that will change the fact that gaming will always push technology forward with the need for faster CPUs and GPUs and that will never be the domain of phones where efficiency is king. There is no reason to worry.

  • Good job on the headline, made me click. I found the full quote interesting:

Do you think GameNative might in some way redefine the way people think about PC gaming on portable devices?

Utkarsh: Yes, I do, and that’s the reason I’m choosing to work on it! I genuinely feel that in the next year or two, GameNative is going to become a complete replacement for handheld PCs like the Steam Deck, and in the medium-long term make expensive, bulky gaming PCs an anachronism.

This seems overly optimistic and there's no mention about Valve actively working on fex as a possible precursor to the Deck2 or Deck3 being an arm powered device. Then there's the problem of heat dissipation in devices that haven't been designed with that type of sustained usage in mind. Will people buy bulkier phones without water and dust resistance in large enough quantities to be sustainable?

I've been excited about PC emulation on my phone and it has been a surprisingly good experience for most non-AAA games (except for the hit on battery life), but it'll never be able to duplicate the immersion that only becomes possible on a large display with the necessary horsepower to bring the game to life. PC gaming isn't going anywhere and neither are dedicated handhelds.

  • Seeing mostly on Mastodon and Bluesky.

  • I've been using this for a long time. The firefox extension and relatively low resource usage is what differentiates it from similar options I've tried.

  • Starting around €420. Not terrible for the specs I guess.

  • Can you provide a few more details about the hardware you're on, the version of Ubuntu, the type of update performed, and anything else you think could be relevant?

  • My family and I are on the Bell network (except for ISP for one person, teksavvy ~= Rogers cable) so this may not be relevant. Those of us that use IPTV have found that we need a VPN to avoid connection issues caused by ISP interference.

Personally, I've had a pretty good experience when I've used it on my phone behind a vpn but that's Bell.

  • I guess there are some examples of that happening with places like patreon, floatplane, twitch, kick, etc. It's hard to fathom anything coming along that can even approach the reach of youtube without backing from another big tech company and eventually following the same enshittification pattern.

  • That used to be a fair deal. We know better now and even have a word for what will happen to us once we're locked into the system, enshittification. Just about every subscription model eventually leads to squeezing as much as they can out of us without a corresponding increase in value.

  • The only way this makes sense is if Sony feels they've cornered enough of the market to be able to recoup the enormous costs of AAA development. I don't see how that's possible without a huge price increase of the console and games.

  • Turns out the linux kernel dodged a massive bullet, thanks Linus.

  • Anything that runs windows can probably run Linux and work well enough for self-hosting. But you're getting ahead of yourself with worrying about hardware.

Easiest way to start is to find something that you want to try selfhosting that is relatively simple and use WSL within windows to familiarize yourself with Linux/networking/docker.

Once you're far enough along to know what your needs are, then you can start thinking about the hardware to meet those needs.

  • Also my daily. I've been a vertical tab person for many years with treestyle tabs and then sidebery. The tab management features in zen without the need of extensions is the primary selling point for me. Everything just works smoothly for my workflow and the UI is well thought out. I haven't had any issues with stability or memory usage since moving over from firefox.

  • When you look at the numbers outside North America, the numbers show even higher % of people using their smartphone as the primary computing device.

  • I've been looking into these types of controllers for a while now and have settled on the GameSir G8/+ as being the best bang for your buck and the one most people recommend. I'm just waiting on the next sale on Alixp to pull the trigger.

  • Weirdly enough, it was family viewing in my household. We just treated it like any other decent sci-fi show and didn't take it that seriously. That was a common experience for friends as well but it's too small a sample size to say one way or another about possible real-world consequences.
