  • Has he considered replacing saying things with eating shit and dying?

  • Listening to my boss and older co-workers who all get paid way more than me struggle to sign a PDF and blame everything on Firefox was a radicalizing moment for me

  • I check the news every morning. One of these days, I’ll see that the little blood clot we’re all rooting for finally won. And that will be such a good day.

  • My wife is the smartest person I know, and she is a doctor herself. She has seen and heard all the information about how chiropractors are quacks. And yet I still can’t convince her to stop going. It’s maddening and mind-boggling.

  • If that’s your experience, either you’ve had shitty therapists or unrealistic expectations.

  • Hmm, yeah. I see what you’re saying, but it also doesn’t feel quite right to me to take a more specific critique, of the way these people are interpreting and implementing their religion, and use that to make a broader negative statement about the religion at large.

  • Easy there, don’t cut yourself on that edge

  • Yeah, of course not. But Westboro Baptist Church being what they are doesn’t make Unitarian Universalists just as bad, despite both sharing a common ancestor in Christianity. By the same logic, saying “Islams are dumb sexists” is just ignorant.

  • That is painting with a broad and uncharitable brush. I think you’ll find that many religions, Islam included, are interpreted by some followers the encourage pretty heinous behavior (see also the FLDS, Westboro Baptist, and so on). But by the same token, there are many interpretations of those same religions that are very progressive. Maybe the problem isn’t religion itself, but the ways in which religious institutions are easily manipulated to justify and support sexism, racism, etc.

  • It makes my heart flutter every time 🥰

  • Having a script, or at least just an outline, sounds like a good idea. I almost don’t know what I would say beyond “so, I’m trans. Please call me [real name] and use she/her pronouns from now on.”

I just have a hard time knowing what info people need to know, but also not wanting to trigger a bad reaction? I don’t know, it always feels like such a dice roll, the uncertainty is so scary.

  • Haha I will try stop myself from doing as you do in this case! I am only a little jealous that you knew they would support you.

Luckily, I live on my own with my wife, so they can’t kick me out, but they could cut ties if they want to (and I would prefer they didn’t). But yeah, that’s a good point. After they find out, it’s up to them. And there are plenty of people that I’m already out to who don’t have a problem with it, so it’s not a me thing, if they don’t process it well.

  • No, it is very much welcome! I sometimes wonder if any of my family have started to pick up clues. Or maybe they think I am growing my hair, painting my nails, and shaving all the time in a very cis way lol. Thank you for sharing, and I hope my brother is as rad as you are!

How did you come out to your family?

  • Having not read the full article, I would think their results point towards a need for more data. If the method of analysis can change the takeaway in any direction, and we’re assuming good faith (big assumption), then we need more good data in order to do better analysis. That said, I don’t really want more researchers poking their heads into our business unless they have earned the community’s trust and are going to act in trans people’s best interests.

  • Yeah, a much more normal way to say that is “I was dealing with a medical condition. It’s no longer an issue, but it’s a bit personal, so I’d prefer if we didn’t get into more than that.”

  • It’s funny, almost all the trans folks I met irl before realizing that I was trans are trans masc. And I remember having almost that exact thought - “But you were a girl, and that’s clearly so much better than what I’m stuck with! Why would you ever want this?” Obviously, I understand now, and I’m happy and proud of them for being themselves! But good lord, how oblivious was I? Lol

  • Oh, to be clear, I don’t think carport solar arrays are fossil fuel propaganda. They’re a useful application where they fit. It’s the idea that solar on fields is harmful that I object to, and I worry that carport solar is being presented without the full context as a red herring, so folks like us who want more solar start objecting to utility-scale ground mount.

  • Nuclear is good for baseload, and although it is very clean, it isn’t quite carbon-free either. It’s also very expensive, unpopular, and has a lot of regulations. I agree it’s good and necessary, but solar and batteries are way cheaper and can go almost anywhere, so they’re way easier to deploy. With the pace of climate action we need, I don’t think it’s an either-or, we gotta do both, fast.
