Not NVidia driver-related, but I would recommend KDE Neon or Kubuntu since they're both KDE and Ubuntu-based, KDE Neon is made by KDE while Kubuntu is an Ubuntu flavor.
It does get slightly darker for me, as if the image from the closed eye is being overlayed on the other eye

You mean a FOSS Clip Studio Paint or maybe Paint Tool SAI? IIRC Adobe Illustrator is a vector-based program
