  • Pocket Casts is great - I've used it (on the free tier) for years. If I didn't use this I would jump to Podcast Addict

  • Yes - but 3db is twice the energy, which is what matters when it comes to damaging your cochlea

  • Thanks - that's half addressed the mystery. So on the one hand I was looking in the wrong place and your links pointed me right. But on the other hand, when I go there trusted devices has indeed disappeared - it now only offers on-body detection and trusted places. Weird

  • You need to read some Iain M Banks. His Culture novels are essentially in that future where AI runs everything. A lot of his characters are essentially looking for meaning within such a world

  • I already use a (Garmin) smartwatch to unlock my phone using the Smart Lock feature (which can use any Bluetooth device to unlock your phone when in range). From the sound of it, the difference here is that the range is way shorter. I guess that's a tiny improvement over what I have now, as in theory somebody in the same room as me could unlock my phone if I wasn't looking, but it's not exactly a game-changer

  • Is it, though? Or is it saying "Give us our basic staple needs"? It would be useful if a theologian could chip in on the dates, but I suspect this prayer predates bready communion

  • Until recently I had both a Samsung phone and a Samsung tablet. According to my PiHole, the phone wasn't too bad, but that tablet was contacting Samsung almost constantly

  • Except the UK doesn't have democracy. It has first past the post voting, which does not reflect the will of the people and leads to millions of votes being wasted

  • All I can say is that I manage a team of people and frequently get the following two messages: "I don't want to come to the office. I feel very isolated working by myself at home - oh my mental health." What are we supposed to do with this?

  • I know the Lemmy/Reddit hive mentality is all "Let me work at home, there's zero benefit to being in the office", but there's another side. We've never had a workforce so disengaged, isolated and feeling no sense of community.

  • As it's Microsoft, you can be pretty sure the option to turn off the new look and feel will be removed in 6 months

  • I felt that Google Maps has been getting ever harder to read. The palette had moved towards a grey-on-grey scheme with very little contrast. This new scheme looks less distinctive... But I think that's a good thing given how hard it was too read the old one sometimes

  • Greenwashing. Driving your pickup truck to buy a Starbucks still isn't okay even if you've ravaged land to grow food that nobody can eat rather than burning fossil reserves

  • Exactly. The problem is not that the lie was convincing - the problem is that so many people wanted to believe the lie

  • I know that's a solution, but as a solution to bad design it's a little bit "Just wear a rubber glove to stop your oven electrocuting you". Yeah sure, but maybe design it better?

  • Another factor to add to these answers: if the water has been treated (if it's mains water), then a not inconsiderable amount of electricity (and so carbon emissions) will have been used to treat it, and probably quite a lot more electricity will have been used to pump it around the country. So using water is also burning energy

  • You're right, it at the same time a small number of people trying to post regularly, regardless of whether they've got something that really needs posting, doesn't tend to provide high-quality content - and I fear that's what we're seeing a lot on Lemmy right now.
