  • As do most other retro handhelds. No idea how they can get away with it. But until somebody actually sues that's not news.

    Edit: Also the ROMs and how they are sorted usually suck ass. So unless you don't know anything using your own ROMs is better anyways.

  • Once in Kindergarten I overheard two adults talking. They were concerned about kids drinking from the same cup because of ... AIDS. That day I learned that even adults could be ignorant. I definitely knew that AIDS could only be transmitted through blood and specifically not through spit.

    I didn't know about the other way but after hearing about AIDS in the news my (I think) brother assured me that it couldn't be transmitted through spit.

  • What is the deal with IPv6?

  • For me personally it's unfamiliarity. Technically all my devices and networks use IPv6. But I just enabled it in my router and used my hosting company's configuration.

    But one of my servers at home should be reachable from the internet but that is only through IPv4. Configuring port forwarding through my router was intuitive and straight forward. But for IPv6 I have to allow the port to be open, but I don't want it to be the standard port so I have to configure the corresponding service on the machine itself to listen with a specific port on a specific address. But I have no idea what each of the addresses it has mean.

    I think some of them are purely internal, some temporary, some less so. And if I ever found out what to use I would then have to configure my DynDNS, which is currently just pointing to the public IPv6 address of my router but not to the server I would want to reach.

    I could learn all these things. But I just can't be bothered because the IPv4 stuff still works.

    And it actually is possible to put all the light and dark mode stuff into one place and switch on the fly without any additional downloads but then people would complain about having to download stuff they don't need on their end. And if the site showed different images depending on light and dark they would again be able to figure it out.

    Most of these APIs were added when more and more applications were built on the web. You can even access USB-devices from the web.

    I'm not saying these things are good. Just that there definitely were reasons beyond telemetry for creating them.

  • Most of these things actually are purely client side. But nothing can prevent the website from sending that information back to the server.

    Or they can be inferred from the client behaviour. Like you said from the GPU capabilities you can get to the actual hardware. If a client only downloads the dark mode CSS it knows which mode the user is currently on.

  • We're not entirely sure. The shelter we got her from said Rex as well. She was abandoned on their doorstep so they don't have more information either. Our vet says "for me that's a Peterbald, I don't care what anyone else says."

    But Lykoi seems to be more likely, going from pictures online. And we love the idea of a werewolf cat.

    As a side question, why is the capability built in by a browser, but the user is never given a choice about whether or not any of this is shared?

    You can disable or fake most of the stuff. But that usually makes you stand out even more in their statistics.

  • I've started playing Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 the other day because I am eager for the Gothic 1 Remake (where I won't be patient) and people have often compared the two franchises for their freedom and immersive mechanics. And of course the inherent Euro-jank.

    I really like it so far and can handle it much better than I expected.

    And incidentally for this community it is currently on sale on GOG. I'm playing the free version I got on Epic a while ago.
