You're right. I think there is a lower limit of required users, but if all the world moved to Lemmy by some miracle, most of the problems would be brought with them. I have the feeling Lemmy is a colelction of people missing the internet from before the big sites like facebook or reddit. It's been missing a long time and this is our chance to get it back :)
A big pool will go down or encounter copyright issues. In the end the internet is a network of physical devices on which we put stuff. If you have a couple of bucks available, you can rent a vServer and just put your stuff there and make it linkable + tagged. If a bunch of people do it, a lemmy community with a link collection could provide this. But it always needs some person to put it up, otherwise it's just back to the big corporate silos.
I'm trying to do this bit by bit by renting some machine from Hetzner, starting with a blog or sth.
I only lurked on reddir but here saying something feels more impactful somehow. Post some fleeting thoughts to begin with, it helps to pump up our rookie numbers.
We probably need soemthing like r/listentothis here too.
I hade some success by using youtube in private browsing (avoid your bubble), and click on obscure music recommendations. 90% will be crap, but i found a few nice artists through that. To share a bit:
The good thing is: Free development can an does happen (see Linux!). Hosting seems to be the main issue. An ideal solution would be each instance having a capacity limiter, which automatically redirects a % of content to other instances if it becomes to much. Is this possible?
This is great. It suddenly feels like the internet of 2003 again, with small communities popping up, competition and less of a corporate chokehold. Only this time they have a shared login and crosstalk, which was sorely lacking back then. If we are lucky this event might establish a stable, new part of the internet, which is separate from the consolidated platforms. The Fediverse doesn't have to replace sites like reddit, just be a next step for people fed up with the corporate net (corponet?).
It's back up!
