  • Well TIL that Radio Caroline is still a thing.

  • My parents still do (these days to mean recording something on their DVR). I don't think young people really watch TV like that do they?

  • I think they don't believe anything, they just regurgitate the last thing they read in the tabloids, and they do it not through loyalty to the tabloids but purely through conformity to their friends who are also regurgitating the last thing they read in the tabloids. It's the same mentality as football team supporters, they have no meaningful personal stake in "their" team but it provides a social role, and it's harmless when it's just football, let them have their fun, but it's dangerous when it comes to the well-being of all the people in the country.

  • Almost certainly it wouldn't be held in Israel, like when Ukraine won in 2022 it was held in the UK the next year. It's a convention not a rule that the winning country hosts it the next year. Unless you mean that Israel winning itself would destroy the competition, that's possible.

  • Because it's a contest for members of the European Broadcasting Union. Technically Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia could enter if they wanted to.

  • Good, I gave it a miss and I'm normally a regular viewer. Not surprised Israel did well since those left watching are more likely to be pro-Israel, I half expected them to win.

  • Have they preserved where the sound gets increasingly out of sync with the video the longer you watch it? Because most archived versions don't have this.

  • Isn't that just evolutionary developed instinct? I can't imagine there would be anybody who's not pro-self preservation on those terms.

  • No we still can, just the government pretends it can't.

  • Obviously bad but wasn't this a breaking news story from several days ago? What's new?

  • First learnt about this man in a recent Even Edinger video if anyone's interested: https://youtu.be/RsuFzwUnT7I Didn't know until now he was re-elected.

  • I’d be interested in trying putting EU and LGBTQ flags under each one.

As a reminder, the "EU flag" is actually the flag of the Council of Europe which we're still members of, so not a "foreign" flag at all. I wouldn't personally put up flags since I don't think that's the thing to do, dare I say it not the British thing to do, but it could confuse them if done.

  • A lot of software will do that if all your music is correctly (and consistently) tagged. Depending on where you get it though it often isn't, and it's a lot of manual work getting all your music files tagged in a standard way.

  • Yep things have certainly changed since then, I remember when it was common advice to new Linux users to generally avoid laptops.

  • On thing I miss is listening to full albums, i.e. you put on an album, listen to all the tracks from beginning to end in the order the artist intended. I know you still can listen to full albums now, but most software is designed these days around individual tracks and it loses something. Sometimes a well put together album can be better than the sum of its parts.

Never subscribed to a streaming service myself, I don't see the appeal of listening to (and potentially becoming emotionally attached to) music I don't actually own and could lose some day.

  • The most I've gone is 36 hours, basically a day-night-day missing 1 night of sleep, I don't recommend it. The second day I was limited enough in functionality that I didn't do anything I'd planned to that day but I was able to function on a basic level, though in terms of "hiding" it I think I succeeded since I still had normal interactions with people and nobody seemed to suspect anything. I was a lot younger then.

  • They are accusing the UK govt of both being too strongly sensitive against anti-semitism (banning protests), and unapolagetically anti-semitic (allowing these depictions).

What is the point of this post?

It's to point out the hypocrisy. This is actual antisemitism, which is apparently being tolerated, compared to the protests which aren't antisemitism but shut down anyway.

  • Where I was originally going with this was to say it seems to be consistent across people from different countries with different education systems and different educational materials.

But, now you've had me looking up vintage Fisher Price letter magnets. And yes, they do seem to use fairly consistent colours over time with the E being consistently blue so you could be on to something. Though not all the letters line up with my personal synesthesia, maybe about half do.

  • I had thought of that but surely we didn't all have the same alphabet magnets.
