It's time to Escape From Reality! :3

  • That's a healthy point of view. I think I've been trying to align with that philosophy, but I feel frustrated by the fact that there will be "inevitable" consequences of my future work that I will likely never be in a position to change course.

  • That's what I've come to realize when transitioning from high school to college. I fear that accepting the guilt may lead to rationalizing the behavior - having apathy towards those your work is harming tends to prevent motivation towards changing the status quo.

I think there's a famous phrase as well about "being paid very well to not consider the issue rationally".

  • That's definitely true, although I think there are definitely ways one can gauge if something does "more harm than good". Especially if the business is designed around taking advantage of another person or killing them through deliberate action/inaction.

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

Can someone who works in an industry or for an employer with clear negative impacts on society/the world maintain a clear concience?

  • Or multiple...

  • You can in games like VRchat - I set my avatar's height to my IRL height.

  • Haven't had any malfunctions on the pixel 9 at all, but I immediately installed grapheneOS and put it in a case. Maybe because I didn't grab it at launch I dodged a bullet? Odd.

  • I've had nothing but good experiences with my pixel 9, what stands out to you?

  • ... Can't tell if slop or you're just using the same color pallette used by slop comics...

Edit: Wait.. Why is it cut off on the right? Hmm...

  • Failure rates and RMAs might be more common when manufacturers save a buck. Samsung SSDs for example are expensive AF, but they have a good reputation for reliablility and lifespan.

Of course, being diligent about backing up your data means that you might benefit from the savings with less worry about the risk. Or you could use the cheaper SSD for something like a Steam library where you may not care as much about long term data preservation.

Word of warning though: super cheap end might end up with you getting scammed, or things like SSDs without DRAM caches, which are slower than even HDDs.

  • Wasn't there development of a linux translation layer for CUDA workloads to run on AMD GPUs? I haven't heard about it in a while, but I'd imagine that'd help the situation.

  • The funny thing is I think we are in the same situation except now the free distribution of games on the internet means the supply side issues are even less relevant to the game industry. The losers might end up being consoles again.

  • One of the reasons the 1983 crash was so harsh was because brick and mortar distribution and producing expensive cartridges made self-publishing and indie development much more difficult. Hell, the Commodore 64 never had any problems throughout the crash because games were distributed on tape and floppy disk, and hobbyists could easily create new games much cheaper than console counterparts.

I would argue we have the same echoes here. The winners will be the indie PC and mobile devs alongside digital distribution platforms like Steam (Valve) and GOG where anyone with talent and ambition can enter.

  • Some may be delusional enough to believe that they can survive without the rest of humanity, but the irony is the billionare/epstein class benefit the most from society's status quo being maintained (or the facade of stability being maintained). A nation's currency has no value if faith in its institutions collapses after all.

  • Additionally, the people in that class are outright incapable of maintaining their aspirations without hiring others with their money to be spent in society as an incentive. Even if mass automation occured, a single event of system failure or being presented with a new situation that they cannot figure out with their skillset could result in death or being stranded.

I believe this concept was already brought to light when that science fiction author was asked by UHNW investors how to set up a system where their bodyguards wouldn't just kill/overthrow them and take over their doomsday compounds in the event of societal or ecological collapse (I guess both as well), and the author essentially said "be nice to them".

  • Yes.

  • I like riding on a train/trolley :3

  • There's your problem, pally.

  • Memory includes SSDs. NAND flash chips for storage + small DRAM cache.

  • Functional. NVIDIA didn't truly "open source" their drivers to anywhere near the same degree as AMD (AFAIK they didn't give much for the community to work with), so you're forced to use the proprietary ones in most cases. That might change over time, though.
