Put a fork in me, I'm done.

  • In case people don't want to, or can't access, the article. Apologies for any formatting issues, I'm on my mobile.

Last week, after Google announced its huge overhaul to Search, I overheard a woman on the phone saying she was switching to DuckDuckGo because you can “opt out of using AI.”

“Google just isn’t Google anymore,” she said. It seems that others had the same idea.

At I/O, Google’s annual developer conference, the company said its traditional list of blue links is being replaced by an AI agent that answers queries, executes tasks, and runs background monitoring agents.

    The backlash has been sharp.

Some have argued it will kill the open web, while others shared concerns that AI overviews surface inaccurate responses and take away control from users who might not want to use AI. It also overcomplicates simple things. Just try to Google the word “disregard.”

In response to Google’s changes, many have begun defecting to DuckDuckGo, a privacy-focused alternative that has never been able to break past Google’s dominance, accounting for only around 2% of the U.S. search market.

During Google’s search antitrust trial in 2023, DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg testified that Google’s exclusive default search contracts harmed its ability to pitch itself as the default on other browsers.

“Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out,” Weinberg said Tuesday in a statement, referring to Google’s Search overhaul. “As a result, their results are getting worse, not better. We want to be the place that puts users in charge and allows them to decide how much or how little AI they want.”

Now it seems that DuckDuckGo is beginning to benefit as consumers flee AI.

DuckDuckGo said U.S. app installs went up 18.1% week-over-week on average during the May 20 to May 25 period, compared to May 13 to May 18. The company said that growth was sustained for six consecutive days and peaked at 30.5% on May 25. On iOS, the rate of install is even higher, with week-over-week growth hitting a 33% average, peaking at 69.9%.

The search engine also said visits to its AI-free search page, noai.duckduckgo.com, averaged 22.7% WoW growth, peaking at 27.7% on May 24. The page turns off every AI feature, like AI-assisted answers and AI-generated images, by default.

The company said the trend is stronger in the U.S., and that DuckDuckGo continued to gain users over the Memorial Day weekend, when it usually sees a dip in traffic.

DuckDuckGo offers its own AI product called Duck.ai. It’s free and doesn’t require users to make an account but provides access to models, including Anthropic’s Claude 4.5 Haiku, Meta’s Llama 4 Scout, Mistral’s Small 3 24B, and OpenAI’s GPT-5 mini. All chats are private because DuckDuckGo strips the user’s IP address before requests reach model providers, deletes conversations within 30 days, and prevents chats from being used for training.

“Not only do we respect user choice, but also user privacy,” Weinberg said. “Everything you do in DuckDuckGo is private; we don’t collect search histories or chats and nothing is used for AI training.”

DuckDuckGo also offers Search Assist, which is similar to Google’s AI overviews, and an AI Image Filter that filters out AI-created images from search results.

Kamyl Bazbaz, DuckDuckGo’s chief communications and policy officer, said both of those AI features are among the company’s most popular, despite their differing ethos.

“People just want a choice,” Bazbaz said.

  • Disclaimer: I do not speak for other nonbinary people. The below is my personal opinion towards myself and does not extend to others.

This is the view I hold as well, about myself. I don't have dysphoria regarding aspects of my body, so I don't categorise myself as a trans person. I'm nonbinary, that's the term that resonates with me most clearly. I do not wish my body reflected my inner understanding of myself, because my body doesn't matter to me in that respect.

Idc what other people categorise themselves as; that's a personal, intimate, and inner journey we all walk when queer and I respect them and their wishes.

  • That's just a normal hotdog then lol

  • I always understood that as like, a visual aid. So illustrations of red blood shows it's carrying oxygen and the blue blood shows it has lost the oxygen, without delving into the molecules and how they gain and lose electrons.

Hypoxemia, hypo meaning underneath, ox meaning oxygen, and emia meaning presence in blood

  • Happy birthday Juno!

  • I just finished Old World Blues the other day, and it was amazing! The appliances really make The Sink feel alive, their chatter is so funny. I adore the Stealth Suit as well. I really enjoy silly science so this DLC was very cool!

  • I just personally don't care for multiplayer experiences, so I avoid anything like ESO and 76; wasted too many hours of my 20s on WoW, LoL, and Rust 😂 and I haven't watched the show, though I have heard great things about it!

I like turn-based strat games, so I'm keen to play 1 and 2 :), and I don't mind (maybe I love?) the Bethesda jank so 3 should be fine haha I have heard great things about Wasteland so that's also on my list. You have great taste! And I'll check out that mod pack for 4, because you sold me on "The Sinstitute" and the rest is a bonus 😂 thank you for the info and recommendations! I really appreciate it,

  • Boone is just great, his story is just tragic, and his armour at so freaking cool. I played with his exclusively the first time I played a number of years ago, but this time I wanted to try another companion. Picked Veronica because she's a cutie, and she can wear the power armour. Loving her so far, with her going in and punching everyone and everyone, while I snipe from a safe distance 😂 I was very enamored with Cass when I met her at the Outpost tho.

I have completed Old World Blues, just the other day, but haven't started the other DLCs yet. I love fun, silly Science and the Stealth Suit was well worth it. I'm a sneaky, charismatic scientist, with 50 points in Melee, from what I understand I should be okay with Dead Money 😬 oh and I'm a NCR girl, no question. Next playthrough though will be a House run and then a Yes Man.

The first Fallout game I ever played was 4, and I have fond memories. Playing New Vegas now I can see why the hardcore fallout fans felt a bit let down by 4, with its lack of dialogue options a sticking point for me. I do want to go back and play 1, 2, and 3, so I can get the full experience.

    76 isn't real and can't hurt me 😂

  • I guess anyone can become a doctor and just tell lies lol

To be fair though, it is like, instant coffee lol so it isn't the best

  • Fkn aye! I can tell you the pictures on pouches do nothing to deter me. I know logically that cancer is bad and awful and just the worst, but the addiction is so insidious and ingrained it feels so intangible.

When I see nrts that cost the same as a pouch, it's obvious the government doesn't actually want people to quit. The addiction is going to win 95% of the time, coupled with a poor mental health system, up that to 99%. Of course it isn't impossible to quit, but it isn't easy and adding gorey cancer pictures to packaging is going to do nothing.

Coupled with the ease of getting black Market ciggies that don't even have that packaging, well. Someone somewhere justified their graphic design degree I suppose.

  • What about rollies though? Like, I guess they'll put the new warning on the pouches, but are filters and papers going to have them too?

It's one thing to print a warning on the filter of a tailored cig, but when rolling your own the only warning is on the pouch itself.

I'd like to see more affordable NRTs tbh, make them real cheap, cheaper than they are, and I'd imagine more people would choose to use them.

  • I'm in this picture

  • Voices of the Void! It's available on itch.io and I've been having a blast!

Never been a big fan of playing scary/horror games (I'm a big fan of horror films though), but this is also a signal simulator as well. Basically, the player character is tasked with looking after an array of satellite dishes, pinging and decoding signals from planets, asteroids, space stations, and other things, and then send them back to main base by drone.

Occasionally a satellite server will go down, so you'll have to drive the ATV out to fix it. The map and the base has so many cool secrets and locations, the story mode events are great fun, the random chance events are so interesting and sometimes freaky! I'm barely scratching the surface here, I mean, I can also use a mop and bucket to clean the base, and decorate, incinerate trash, craft things.

It's pre-alpha but I haven't even seen any where near to everything the game has to offer yet. I'm having so much fun with it!

  • While I have seen corpse pictures on forums for cats and dogs, I think I see it more on "exotic" pet forums, like guinea pigs, rats, mice, lizards, snakes, and spiders/insects. It's distressing regardless, because that was someone's beloved pet, but also no one needs to see their corpse; a pic of when it was alive is perfectly acceptable when discussing grief. I just don't see the point of posting a picture of the corpse, it just feels unnecessary.

I have had pets pass away, and I wouldn't even think of taking a photo. It just feels so weird to me. Im not the OP of this post, but I get what they're saying.

  • By spamming pictures of their dead pets over the internet? It's one thing to discuss their passing, it's another to post a pic of their corpse.

At the very least, they could place it under a spoiler/NSFW tag.
