  • I was teetering toward the Super Nintendo also with Earthbound, MK2/MK3 Ultimate, and Super Mario World. The roaming around in Super Mario 64 and flying non-stop with the birdman suit in Pilotwings 64 won me over with the N64 in the end though.

    Could do this all day...

  • Exactly. It's in no way a bad thing for anyone. We'll see the way that it's implemented. It's the first step. r/Android is rearing its head here. Let's enjoy this for the moment

  • Glad that you emphasized Europe. Here in the states where iMessage is dominant, it'll make a difference.

At the end of the day it's not a bad thing. I'm also waiting for details with compatibility to be ironed out, but it's a start.

Just surprised at the whole negative energy with this announcement considering this was a "when pigs fly" or "when hell freezes over" sorta thing. Again, it's a start and hopefully Google opens it up (even if forcibly by the EU) down the road.

  • Samsung Messages is the only other, right?

  • Same. I don't even mind Tensor 2 in it. It runs fine enough and I never had any overheating. It's a beautiful piece of hardware.

My main gripe is with how heavy it is. It's tiring having to hold it for extended periods when I mostly use the outer screen (which is the perfect screen size, but that's a whole other thing). And yeah... watching media on the inner screen with a crease and with the size of the media the same as a normal smartphone... it's just something I looked over before purchasing.

I regret buying it also. But... I would have also regretted buying the Galaxy Fold, OnePlus Open, or any other foldable. Right now, my Pixel Fold just sits in a drawer as an overly expensive backup device while I use a Pixel 8 Pro as my daily. Will likely use the Fold as a trade-in for the Galaxy Ultra in January/February.

  • Chalk me up as one of the folks that was adamant this was due to an API mismatch.

Yikes. Low benchmarks in the case of everyday Pixel usage isn't a big deal, but prohibiting the installation without reason will make this a bigger deal than it needs to be. And I can't fault users for feeling that way.

  • At least you acknowledged it. The title of this post should have a misleading tag at best. There's no wonder that no other major outlets have reported on this.

  • Same. I've paired it wirelessly to one car and wired to the other car. Both have worked seamlessly since getting the phone last week.

    No problems here.

  • I'm guessing here, but are any of those products on that website both purchasable AND given a guaranteed product support time? Or to make it more specific, has Google ever killed off a phone (Nexus and Pixel years, so 15 years total) prior to its end of support date?

I don't believe they have. Stadia, a non-phone product, is the closest thing. Of course it's not a phone and Google also didn't give a eol date before its release. When it was killed they refunded any purchased games. So I guess the better question is would you be fine with getting a refund in the amount of your purchase of a Pixel 8/Pro if they didn't hold up their end of the bargain?

I know some of the comments in the community are tongue-in-cheek, but if Google were to keep the prior support date or do what they did today by increasing them, folks still wouldn't be happy.

  • Didn't notice that initially, so thanks for pointing it out.

I really hope that it's not the same. The only thing I can think of is that the Google store mentions 24 hr battery life with footnote that mentions certain features being turned on may lower battery life. The leak today says 24 hr battery life with AOD turned on, which gives me hope. I may get disappointed come 10/4.

If it's free watch with the purchase of an 8 Pro as rumors indicate, I won't be disappointed for long.

  • Nice. Looking forward to the event. Hopefully the time between phone announcement and release is short like last year. It was only six days for me.

The watch should be interesting also. Size is supposedly the same, so maybe the processor will yield more than one day of battery life? That's my hope anyway.

  • !...And every Google product I've owned has been awful!<

I don't get it. "Every Google product I've owned" makes it sound like you've owned a lot of Google products. But every single one you've "owned has been awful".

Why do you continue buying Google products if they've been awful... for you? Maybe Google isn't the right OEM for you? I mean, no one is forcing you to buy their products if they're "awful", right?

  • I agree with you on the rounded edges. I'll likely get it also and switch back and forth between it and my daily. Really hoping they do something extra with the reported temp sensor.

  • Sorry for the late reply. The app I use updated notifications, so I can see when I get them now.

I've noticed it, but I'm unbothered. It's an ever so slight thing. It's not super hard to unfold it the full 180 and I don't feel uncomfortable doing so (I open it the full 180 every time).

It's a fun phone for sure. I'm surprised at the polish it has for Google's first foray into foldables.

While Android as a whole continues to shrink in the US, Google Pixel keeps growing

  • Nice review. I give it an 8/10.

My only two gripes that I agree with you on...

    1. I never had the fingerprint issues that others had with the 6 Pro or 7 Pro, so I miss the on-screen sensor. When the phone is unfolded and I need to turn the phone into portrait, my natural inclination is too rotate it clockwise... which makes my fingers mash the power and volume buttons. When folded, the bottoms should be on the top half, imo.

    2. Yeah... The inside screen is waaaay to shiny and the reflections are a distraction when viewing content.

Cameras, software, phone calls, etc are ok on my end though.

Lastly, I bought this phone because I thought it would be a great media consumption device. In reality, I find myself using the smaller, outer screen more than I've used my 6 Pro or 7 Pro. I rarely use the inside unless I'm writing a long-ish email or need the dual-pane for a lot of cutting and pasting. Using the outer screen so much makes me wish for a pixel mini so bad. Or even a size similar to the regular iPhone Pro would be nice. Oh well.

All-in-all, it's more than solid for the niche group that it was built for. I'm just not sure that I'm in that group. I'm not sure that I won't get a Pixel 8 Pro also. I just enjoy using the smaller outside screen of the fold so much.

  • Legendary ending and silly humor throughout made this my goat game. Super Mario World and Super Metroid tie for second.

  • The 4a was indeed a good size as was my all-time fav, the Pixel 5.

I hope something comes of this.
