  • It's still founded and based on utter bullshit which doesn't actually work beyond providing a placebo effect, so I'd argue it's actually worse that they get any sort of credibility in that way. A five year degree in baloney is still baloney.

  • I hear you, but even if I'm presented with the options for voting between getting shot in the foot vs shot in the neck, I'm going to vote for getting shot in the foot so I can have a better chance to fight back. It sucks and is stupid that not getting shot isn't an option presently but voting doesn't have an opportunity cost so voting for a lesser harm is worth it.

  • Ya, I can not fathom why so much of Lemmy seems to have this inane either/or mindset when it comes to voting and taking other action of any kind as if they were mutually exclusive. The only way I can rationalize it is as a half-assed way of excusing present inaction (because they'll totally take direct action... as soon as someone else starts it) or some kind of stupid moral purity thing. Those are very uncharitable interpretations though so I try not to assume them to be true. I just don't have any other good explanations for it.

  • You should probably cut your earlobes off too then, you don't really need them and it's possible they could get infected at some point in your life. And I'm sure you shave your and your children bald regularly, right? You don't need hair and it removes the possibility of lice which can carry blood-born diseases.

  • That's really not what they're saying at all; I get the feeling that you may be taking this too personaly. It's a reasonable argument that engaging with the cultural phenomenon, even if not financially supporting it directly, still signals support or at least tolerance of the controversies so closely associated with it these days. You may disagree of course but I think calling it "a demonization of everyone who ever enjoyed the series as a child" is a gross misrepresentation of their position. It is, at most, a condemnation of those who would continue engaging with it since then. (And, ironically, likening them to Dolores Umbridge is engaging in the very type of cultural normalization that they were arguing against. Although if you disagree with them I don't suppose you'd feel that matters anyway.) Anyhow, that's enough arguing on someone else's behalf for me today. I just can't stand seeing arguments misrepresented like that.

  • I mean Fever Tree is obviously better but also costs three times as much.

  • It's not a review though?

  • I think it's safe to assume she wrote something like [insert date here]. That seems like a pretty obvious explanation to me anyways.

  • Their point still stands

  • Good points! I think I'm leaning slightly towards the Pixel at the moment. It's true that while I'm not interested in a custom ROM now that could change down the line.

  • Good question, I assume that both OneUI and Pixel Android support the old three button navigation as well as gestures, but I'm not certain.

edit: Upon looking into it I can confirm that android 16 (and its derivative presumably) support three button navigation.

  • It's about $8 CAD / month, which is noticeably more than Air vpn's ~$5.25 CAD / month (if I signed up for two years). That being said I understand your point, assuming that they have that trust. As someone who isn't familiar with them though I need to first know why they deserve it more than others. Other people do seem to speak highly of them though and have made some points that are in their favour.

  • What is it about Mullvad that makes it superior to all other options? I'm open to it, I just need something to justify the higher price.

  • How important is port forwarding? I've never really bothered with it. I'm definitely still in the shallow end of the pool when it comes to using vpns.

  • They're not denying that happens in England, just pointing out that it functionally happens in the US too. So I'm not really sure what your point is.

  • Ya, I'd almost liken minesweeper as more of a meditation than a game. That being said I do genuinely enjoy it as that; as a flowchart that's simple enough that I should always get it right but complex enough that I do still have to pay attention. It's good for resetting my focus.

  • My understanding is that not saving window size and placement is a limitation of Wayland right now (for security reasons that it's trying to address rather than ignore like xorg I think?). I think it's something that's planned to be added eventually, but who knows when that might be. It is frustrating in the meantime I agree.

Take all this with a large grain of salt of course, I am by no means an expert on the matter and am just repeating what I read when I looked into it myself a year ago or so.

  • Yes, if taking it seriously, then those are reasonable conclusions. However, I think you're just overthinking it, in this context the scenario exists to service the joke rather than the other way around.

  • The comedic implication is that the giant eagles are natural predators of goblins and, more importantly, hobbits. And might be inclined to a mid-flight snack.
