  • I have read the article. While yes, most of it is neutral and factual, the opening paragraph colours all of it towards a certain message by saying "Gen Z has managed to", implying Gen Z is responsible for it - which it most definitely isn't, we are nowhere near being decision makers today, let alone 10-20 years ago when we were meant to learn and develop these skills.

I am a teacher, and also part of Gen Z. Believe it or not, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone more in favour of restricting access to social media for kids or raising standards than me; the fact of the matter is, however, that we didn't cause these problems. It's not like we are happy about this either.

  • I'm not sure why this article frames this outcome as the fault of Gen Z. It's not their fault their parents gave them iPads instead of spending time with them, nor for the chronically underfunded educational system.

  • The internet has no viable alternatives. Shitter has multiple other social media alternatives. There's no excuse.

Knowingly going to the Nazi Bar makes you a Nazi, full stop

  • The other countries have a term limit for who wields that power.

  • The Chairman of the Central Military Commission is the head of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and the commander-in-chief of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), the People's Armed Police (PAP) and the Militia. The officeholder is additionally vested with the command authority over China's nuclear arsenal.

Access to the nuclear arsenal seems like excessive power for a figurehead. Xi Jinping holds that office.

  • He might not have absolute power in the state but your comparison with a common employee is frankly laughable. He is the agenda setter for the highest tiers of Chinese Government, he has the power to appoint multiple executive positions and he is the supreme military leader. He's not just a random cog in the machine like the grocery clerk, he has real, actual, abusable power and democratic systems must limit any person's access to abusable power, even if you believe there hasn't been abuse yet. The issue is not that, the issue is that some day, a person with ill intent might maneuver themselves into holding Xi Jinping's office and abusing said power, hence the need for the newcomer's terms to also be limited.

For the record, though, I think the fact that Xi has managed to remove his term limits is in and of itself an abuse of power, regardless of what else he has done.

  • It is not merely about doing a good job, it is about the ethics of power. Power corrupts, so the only reasonable recourse is to share it with as many people as possible and wield it for a limited amount of time. And it's also about ethics, what gives one person the right to have power over others for a limitless amount of time?

Frankly, you seem like you're about to argue for people just doing as they're told and not worrying their pretty little heads with this, which is against any sane left wing ideals.

  • All European democracies have term limits too. Heck, even ancient civilizations had term limits, and disregarding those has always lead to worse outcomes for the common man.

  • A good indicator is not having the same leader for decades. Term limits are a democratic safeguard and China has mostly abolished them. That does not bode well.

  • I don't think most atheists would hate to be proven wrong. Most don't have an issue with other people believing either, unless they try to push their beliefs on other people.

  • And yet, it has proven to be an adaptation that has greatly increased their success as a species. In the end, it doesn't matter to the plant whether it is eaten or not as long as it gets to reproduce - and we've spread it around the world.

  • I think it's more about tribalism. I have seen both good and bad takes on both .ml and .world. I think Lemmy is slowly losing the civil conversations that could be had here before.

  • That's very interesting to me (I am a bit mathematically illiterate when it comes to probability). Wouldn't it still have a lower chance of being a 1 if you said you want your second roll to be the one that counts beforehand? Or would different permutations screw with the odds, say rolling a 12 then a 1, rolling a 15 and a 1, etc, counting towards unfavourable possibilities and bringing it back to 1/20?

  • Look up Blockada on F-Droid, it will save you from those. I think it also has a Google Play version, but I can't vouch for that one working as intended

  • I was a kid when ENT was airing, I wasn't able to watch it consistently, but it was my first brush with Star Trek and I remembered how hopeful the song made me feel for the future. I can admit it is corny, but I was a kid and I didn't know much English at the time so I didn't get the religious undertones and to this day hearing it makes me incredibly nostalgic. I long for that feeling of hopefulness now and I'm thankful I get to experience at least a little bit of it when watching that intro.

  • Calm down Cruel, you just didn't get the joke

  • Oh, I know there are none currently, but that doesn't mean we as a society can't decide to have something akin to a community centre where people could meet and do stuff for free. It would also probably boost birth rates while helping people be less lonely and I think it would be more effective than trying to ban birth control and abortion, so it would also make sense for Western nations to fund this if politicians actually cared about these sorts of things

  • We should make some places where people go to flirt and meet new people. It isn't healthy for society as a whole not to have any place where it is appropriate to approach each other. That used to be bars for older generations but that seems to have changed and GenZ also consumes much less alcohol than older generations.

  • Maybe you will simply know that it is impossible to retrieve them
