  • Nor should it. However, I wouldn't discount that as being a negotiation tactic either. You know, act like you've got all the cards so your opponent tips their hand.

The reality is all countries outside the EU get "special treatment", they've all got slightly different arrangements. It's why people said things like "I want a swiss style deal".

For all its flaws, the UK does actually have a lot to offer the EU and vice-versa, it's in bothd interests to form closer relationships.

  • Gosh, can you imagine dying of cancer after spending the last few good years of your life protecting a literal paedophile monster and taking the fall for him.

A monster that gives no fucks about you.

Nobody is going to give a fuck about her. Not even his base. Especially not his base.

    What a sad, miserable life.

  • Sure but it's not a new thing, either.

  • It's self hosting by the literal definition that you host the server yourself.

That it's closed source and sends all kinds of data to another server is an entirely separate (and valid) concern.

As much as I agree with the concerns around Plex, I would rather we didn't start gatekeeping the self hosting community with arbitrary requirements and grey lines around what is and isn't "true self hosting" or whatever. I would far rather we inform people and let them make their own choices about what they want to host on their private devices and networks.

  • Because it's a record for the UK, this means temperatures are rising on a global scale.

  • When a car turns, one side's wheels have to rotate faster than the other side as it needs to travel further.

Thus, it's advantageous to be able to power wheels independently.

  • And just so we're really on the same page, just because something is a challenge doesn't mean it's a bad thing or shouldn't be done.

It's not like we didn't have the same problems with balancing the grid when people started installing electric ovens or Aircon or dishwashers or washing machines or pretty much any other heavy appliance you can think of.

In fact, did you know that if you were to install Solar and export production to the grid, that can cause the same problems? A lot of people seem to think that it's about how much power the grid can produce alone but there's a reason it's referred to as a "balance", too much input causes problems as well. Utilities need to plan energy production in advance to cope with an already variable demand, there are people who's entire job is predicting spikes and drops on consumption so they can figure out if they need to spin up or shut down entire power plants - both of which are expensive to do and any mistake will mean brownouts or worse, a collapsed grid. This isn't a new thing, it has been this way for decades.

If anything, EVs and EV chargers can be made a lot smarter than the above to actually help balance the grid.

My electric provider gives me cheap electric and a discount on my bill if I let them decide when the car charges (via controlling the car charger). I just tell them when I need the car to be fully charged by and they handle the scheduling. Do I care if the car charges at 2am instead of 9pm if it's fully charged by 7am either way? Absolutely not.

Better yet, V2X is starting to become a thing - this enables bi-directional charging for the EV. In other words, the EV itself actually helps balance the grid rather than just be a pure drag on it.

In the modern age, overall grid capacity is only a small part of the problem, what we need is a smarter grid. A smarter grid will cope with spikes in demand without forward planning and being cheaper overall for everyone.

  • You know what, it's not for me but I'll give the guy credit, it's at least somewhat original in the sea of mediocrity that is online dating. A bit of self-depreciation too.

If he'd just worded that first line a bit differently, it might not even come across as creepy, but alas...

  • Bungie played an absolute blinder by signing up with Activision all those years ago as all the shitty monetisation they pulled got blamed on Bobby K.

Nope, turns out Bungie was just that shitty the whole time.

  • I'm going to pick a slightly more obscure one: Kane from Command & Conquer.

  • If that's the case, then it should be trivial to prove and the EFF can force them to open source it.

Let's not make baseless accusations, let's get proof and hold them to it.

  • To make it more portable would be my guess. Same reason the Switch is flat.

  • The controller sends nput direct to the server via WiFi, rather than via Bluetooth through the viewing device. Removes some latency, which given how much latency cloud having introduces makes a difference.

  • That's not strictly accurate.

The slicer is Open Source yes, but not the printer firmware or software. That's closed source and proprietary to Bambu.

Now there's some contention there because a lot of the features and ideas that make modern 3D printing as reliable and great were developed in the open, under open source licenses and Bambu has definitely implemented many of them in their printer firmware, but they don't infringe any licenses in the printer software itself (as far as anyone is aware).

This whole debacle centres around the slicing software, which is separate from the printer itself (though is necessary to actually use the printer) and it's AGPL.

  • Same, I am used to being the punch line in various jokes but I've never heard it referred to as "Irish Logic".

  • You should consolidate those 4 pensions into one pot and take more control of it. There's an extremely high chance that the employer provided pension is performing poorly and not growing as fast as it could be. They pick the lowest risk by default so growth is massively stunted.

It's pretty easy to open an account on something like vanguard and transfer those pensions in, you can then have control over how that money is invested - usually they make you pick a "risk factor" where highest risk has highest potential growth and lowest has lowest potential for crashing, but the TL;DR is over a 15 year period even if there's a crash you'll come out on top because it averages out.

Essentially what I'm saying is pool your pensions together and pick the highest risk factor for the next 8-10 years, it's a bit of a gamble but it's a better chance of that pot growing into something actually useful than you have right now.

  • I work in IT, been a software developer for decades.

I have a full on smart home, all the smart tech you can imagine. All connected and running locally via home assistant.

Smart tech isn't bad, shitty tech is.

  • I'm the UK, 10kWh from a large brand (sigenergy) costs about £2k, but cheaper brands you can get about 3x the storage for that price.
