Web developer, gamer, reader, and a true ligma male

  • I mean, Hitler never got a majority with the NSDAP. I think he actually got like 30% of the vote or something, and became the biggest party, but far away from a majority.

The issue was that the centre-right parties were scared of the left-winged / communist parties, so they decided to cooperate with Hitler.

Basically, it's usually centre-right politicians that give rise to radical right politicians, and the radical right politicians don't need a majority, to get into power.

  • For the self-hosters among us:

calibre-web-automated and grimmory are two examples of self-hosted ebook management platforms that integrate with the Kobo ereader very nicely.

I'm sure there are other FOSS solutions as well out there, whom integrate with the Kobo ereader.

  • Honestly, I just don't try to do anything like this at all. I don't want to be a missionary for privacy rights, and if people decide to upload their entire life to Google's servers, then I just shrug my shoulders and move on, because I don't really care what others do lol.

  • This is a prime example of the fallacy fallacy, and maybe also ad hominem.

The fact that someone says ridiculous things like "women are dishwashers", doesn't mean that their thesis "there is a male loneliness epidemic", is incorrect. Additionally, if their arguments are completely wrong, it doesn't automatically mean their thesis is wrong.

Furthermore, I personally do think that there's a male loneliness epidemic. While people like Andrew Tate are definitely having a bad influence, we should think, "why are these people popular? What draws young men to listen to misogynists?". And the reason (I think), is because young men are simply neglected by society, and are generally quite lonely. As a young man myself, I think it is actually kind of hard to make friends. Other men expect me to be "masculine" (aka, be an asshole, be tough, etc.) and simultaneously I'm very reluctant to make friends with women, because I'm kind of scared of falsely being accused of sexual harassment.

I feel like if I say or do the wrong thing (which excludes physically harassing someone), there's a risk of a woman completely ruining my life by simply accusing me of harassing her. And while the accusation might not become a proper conviction (or even prosecution), the accusation itself is already incredibly harmful for my reputation.

So to avoid that altogether, I simply avoid women in general. Or at least, I don't approach them. I don't talk to them, unless they talk to me first. Because if I make the wrong move, if I look at them the wrong way, my life might already be over.

Does this mean I hate women? No. It simply means I hate how people immediately jump to conclusions when they read "man accused of harassing a woman". Personally, when I read that headline, I don't immediately think less of that man, unless he's been found guilty of it.

Does this make me an incel? I don't really know; I don't think I'm owed sex in any way, and I don't think women inherently hate me the moment they see me. I do wish I could have a more feminine friend circle, because it's currently all men. But yeah, I think things are kinda fucked up right now, but simultaneously I honestly don't really know what I (or we as a society) could do to fix this.

  • Honestly, I think winter, because while I can easily protect myself against the cold by wearing thick, warm clothes, I can't really protect myself agains the heat. Even if I walk around naked, it's still gonna be hit as fuck.

  • Wow, congrats! I just checked my profile and realized I have hit the 100 mark too.

  • Oops, sorry then

  • It seems that while this update once again contains lots of (unncessary) AI bullshit, it also has some other positive changes, such as :

    • More End-To-End encrypted functionality
    • Improved file upload (apparently 6x as fast)
    • Better performance
    • Converting documents
    • Native desktop client UI (hopefully the new appImage does work for Linux, because it does not work right now.
    • Improved AppAPI for other developers to develop plugins / apps / extensions in different programming languages
    • Added pronouns to account profile
    • Right-To-Left text for the Arabic users (and whoever uses RTL instead of LTR)
    • PGP/MIME support for Nextcloud Mail
    • Chunked file upload on desktop app
    • Improved OpenID Connect API

Overall, I am still disappointed by the direction towards AI that Nextcloud has taken, but I suspect that it makes them more money. Also, apparently large organizations / enterprises who pay Nextcloud GmbH for support, are also allowed to influence the roadmap of the software, which probably has something to do with jumping on the AI bandwagon.

However, despite this new direction, Nextcloud still does the job for me: Easy file syncing, with document collaboration, calendar, contacts and basically act as a whole replacement for Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace / whatever with little to no problems.

  • There's Ryot.

Besides that, there's also Movary, which has contributions from yours truly, but it only supports tracking movies at the moment. I'm planning on adding TV show support later, probably after the first stable 1.0 has released (In my mind it'll probably be major release 2.0 or 3.0). The main dev and I don't have much time these days, so it might take a while...

  • So my first thought is: Download the entire file BEFORE watching it. This ensures that you won't have to buffer while watching and it'll run 100% smoothly.

Downloading files isn't very difficult generally; just go to some (torrenting) website, copy the magnet or download the torrent and import it into your torrent client.

When you have your .mp4, .mkv, .whatever file, you can simply click on it and play it on your preferred media player (such as VLC). However, you may want to watch it on some other device... Easy solution (for TVs) is just connect your laptop to your TV with an HDMI cable, duplicate your screen and start watching.

But if you actually want to stream, you'll have to tread into the self-hosting zone. Meaning that you run a media server that hosts all your content and your devices (whether it's a TV, android phone, iPhone, whatever) can access and play the content from your server.

This is a very, very big topic that I won't cover in a single comment. I will point you in the right direction and mention Jellyfin; Jellyfin is a free, open-source media server that you can set up to manage and stream your files with

  • If you just want to track your data for yourself, without the social media features (like Strava has), I would recommend Opentracks.

  • I considered voting for them, but I didn't.

The reason is because there are other parties with comprehensive plans for digitalisation / IT stuff PLUS lots of other plans for healthcare, economy, infrastructure, etc.

Pirate party seems like a party focused on IT stuff only, whereas I also care about other topics, such as international trains, subsidizing healthcare, improving education and lots of other things.

(I voted for Volt Nederland BTW)

  • Slightly offtopic:

When I go to the source in my browser, I see that this toot has been boosted roughly 800 times and roughly 1400 favorites.

However, when I go to this toot via my Mastodon app, I'm seeing 256 boosts and 1 favourite.

Why is this different in my app vs the fosstodon link to the toot?

  • I wanted to watch Game of Thrones, but I couldn't, because there was no legal streaming service available back then. (This was in 2015 or something).

That's when I discovered the Pirate Bay and its wonders..
