  • The entire article contains not a single source, not even one from within China. There is no data, not a single piece of verifiable information. This is a complete nothing burger.

This is just another propaganda piece spread by an account that is even cross-posting form ml communities under some weird pretext.

  • Wait what happens with basic rights when Russia attacks the next European country.

In principal there is no contradiction between fundamental rights and and security, and the article doesn't say how this prioritization of security takes place, and what effect it has.

  • Even researchers from China's Tsinghua University and China’s Transport Planning and Research Institute have warned and published a review in the journal Water in November 2024 examining how ship canals affect ecosystems worldwide. They found that,

large canals can reshape wetland hydrology, foul water quality, damage plant communities, disrupt animal populations, and open pathways for invasive species.

Science published an article, China’s canal project threatens biodiversity, warning about devastating consequences for wildlife and the wider ecosystem.

There are many similar reports questioning this project, but the article ignores them completely.

This is another example why we should not post content from media outlets like the SCMP as they are subordinate to China's propaganda machinery. In that particular case, the article even refers to the "state-run Securities Times."

This is not a reliable source imo.

  • The problem is that no country is on track to help the climate, particularly not the major emitters like the U.S., China, Russia, India, ...

  • I replaced the links, thank you, and sorry.

  • This 'treaty of friendship and cooperation' is a next step for Putin to turn Russia into a puppet state.

  • I hope, as China is the world's largest polluter. Even as emissions went down slightly, China remains among the worst polluters, and the country isn't on track to meet the Paris goal.

Some analysts fear, however, that China's emissions have plateaued only as the economy has slowed down.

  • When the People's Republic of China was established in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party nationalized large parts of the land and property across the country. Under Chinese law, the state owns 100% of the land, while dwellers receive some sort of 'lease right' to live on the land. They have what I'd call 'nominal possession' (I don't know whether this is the correct legal term as I am not a legal person, but it means that the land and buildings are owned by the state, while people are given a 'right to live' on the land).

The housing laws and property rights have slightly changed over time in China, particularly in the 1980s when these 'lease rights' (my term) was formalized and registered. Lease rights may run over several decades of what I know from anecdotal evidence, but I haven't seen official data about that.

However, the Chinese state still owns the land, and it can revoke these 'lease rights' from people at any time.

This form of ownership is not comparable with anything we know in the West or any democratic society. So this article is misleading to say the least.

But the propaganda goes on ... You see this kind of article over and again. It's a false narrative.

  • Chinese airlines to raise fuel surcharges on domestic flights as the war in the Middle East drives up oil prices

... Air China, China Southern and its subsidiary Xiamen Airlines said in statements that they will increase surcharges on flights of up to 800 kilometers by 60 yuan ($8.70), and 120 yuan for longer flights. Spring Airlines and Juneyao Airlines also announced fuel surcharge hikes.

... The move comes as the war in the Middle East, and Iran's effective closure of the crucial Strait of Hormuz, have sent crude prices soaring.

  • How many CEOs are female and male in these countries?

  • These are empty words. What the Chinese Communist Party is doing here amounts to genocide.

  • Can Szijjártó and others be held legally accountable for this behaviour? Does anyone know what the law says?

  • It is about as reliable as the NYT or CNN.

I don't trust the NYT much less than I did in the meantime, still a bit more CNN, but it's perfectly alright to verify content regardless of the source. Reuters, AP, and a lot of Western media have 'business agreements" with Chinese state-media (which, essentially, means they have agreements with the Chinese Communist Party). There is a brief article, The Politics of Pure Business, published by the China Media Project some time ago if you are interested.

Influence operation in the West by Chinese media goes far beyond this. A great project about this is Lingua Sinica, a tool enabling you to research possible Chinese influence in any country's media. It's an exceptional source. So the influence can come from all sides, not just the U.S. or any Western government.

What makes Chinese state-media outlets special is they are inherently propaganda tools. They publish everything what the Party wants, and nothing what the Party doesn't want. This is not comparable to any Western media, no matter whether the Western outlets are publicly or privately funded. I don't say that we in the West have a perfect media, but the structure in China is fundamentally different.

You can see this now in the U.S. very clearly, for example. Despite the fact that the Florida man is trying to turn his country into a dictatorship close to the one in China, you can read a lot of articles and reports in the U.S. that are critical of Donald Trump. But you can't find even a single critical article about Xi Jinping in Chinese media.

  • Can we please stop using the SCMP?
