Gentle nerd freak of the pacific northwest. All nation states are vermin.

  • This attitude is the problem, yep.

There's no other medical condition which only 0.8% of people ever recover from where we tell people to just keep trying treatments that we know don't work.

An individual's behaviour is a contributing factor in most diseases. But the hormones, social factors, etc. which determine that behaviour are beyond the control of willpower. GLP1s work because they treat the hormonal imbalances which cause the behaviour that causes weight loss.

We don't tell people they're pathetic for catching a cold, though our social organization put them in a place where their biological weakness to that disease was triggered.

  • people have been losing weight by a variety of methods

    Surprisingly, they have not.

Before GLP1s, weightloss was a myth. 99. something % of people (edit 99.2% of women) who meet the medical definition of obese will always be obese despite a lifetime of effort.

We know for certain from decades of research that weightloss from willpower alone, even with diet plans or excersize plans is functionally impossible. The best they do is yoyo effects - no diet has ever produced perminant weight loss on a real scale.

Very rarely a statistically insignificant sample size enjoy permenant weight loss and these individuals are held up to show it's possible and you can do it too! But that's just not true, and we know it's not true because decades of stats show again and again that perminant weight loss just does not happen.

  • "The mindset right now is that the GLP-1 hormone itself is the secret sauce to weight loss," DiMarchi said. "What we've found in rodents and monkeys is that the combination of glucagon and GIP activity alone are sufficient to achieve comparable weight loss, without the lengthy dosage adjustment and adverse GI side effects

This article is saying that slightly different products can also produce weight loss.

  • As the average income of a country goes up, birthrate goes down. That's just how humans are. We guess at reasons, but it's just a universally observable fact.

All high income industrialized nations developed low birthrates. North america, europe, japan, korea and now china.

If rich nations allow room for anyone else to claw their way up out of the low end of the value chain, we'll see the same thing happen there.

  • don't cry when the next rights they take are ones you were enjoying.

You're overreacting - kids not using phones during class is not a fundemental human rights issue.

Moreover, the study only says that there is little impact on test scores so far. That's a very limited conclusion. There's a lot more to education than test scores. Even one of the authors warns against reading this study as evidence against phone bans.

  • one of the report’s authors, said it would be wrong for policymakers to see the results as a reason to shy away from restrictions.

“One of the concerns I have about this study is that it might encourage people to walk away from phone bans as a compelling reform. And I think that would be a major mistake

The study very specifically says "average effects on test scores are consistently close to zero.”

Little effect on test scores is VERY different to no positive effect and at least one author of the study is still strongly in favour of phone bans.

  • It can be very hard to tell gender from bones archaeologically, even gender assigned at birth.

Specialists use the terms "gracile" vs "robust" because that's what they're actually seeing, not female vs male.

There have been some famous mis-identifications like the triple burial at dolni vestonice that was thought to be a husband and wife, maybe with a shaman who failed to save a baby, since the third person's hand was in the woman's crotch. Then ancient genetics confirmed they all had Y-chromosome. Oops!

  • Most AI music will just end up with the badge, right?

  • Yet another piss-weak response from elites who won't call out brazenly illegal authoritarianism even when it affects them.

  • The nation-state is an institution of violence control - how israel is acting is how all countries fundementally are.

Mostly they are bullying behind closed doors, or the bullying stays in a pre-kinetic stage because the risk/reward ratios don't yet recommend large scale killing.

With israel's most important ally, the US empire, controlled by enemies of the US who hasten its demise, Iran having made some real steps towards normalising some international relationships and the israeli population in the grip of rampant bloodlust, there will never be a better time for israel to gain some much need strategic depth by seizing gaza, the west bank and southern lebanon. Like germany starting ww1, israel felt the clock ticking and struck before their window closed forever.

As to why the US still supports this, like all succesful mid-tier states in history, israel has become expert in manipulating the internal politics of the empire to its benefit.

  • Thank you!

I vaguely recalled Joseon and Goryeo being different dynasty/periods.

But i had heard that Han as a designation for Korea ultimately comes from the Chinese Han dynasty which was heavily influential/directly controlled large areas of modern day Korea/Vietnam.

Was the river named to honor the dynasty or is that just not true?

  • South Korea calls its northern neighbour Bukhan (북한), or “north Han”, a variation of how the South refers to itself: Hanguk (한국), meaning “Han nation”, a shortening of Daehan Minguk (대한민국), the Republic of Korea.

However, North Korea calls itself Joseon (조선), a shortened version of Joseon Minjujuui Inmin Gonghwaguk (조선민주주의인민공화국), or the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. It has traditionally referred to the South as Namjoseon (남조선), or “south Joseon”.

  • I love hearing others info dump, usually. Topic dependent. Sometimes i'm being polite.

I still often try to predict what people are going to say or interrupt with my own thoughts - as i do that all conversation.

But i am engaged and interested and want to hear what they have to say. The more interested i am, the more connections are going off demanding to be spoke.

I try to remind myself to hold back, or mentally repeat a few words to remind myself what i want to say as i focus on listening: "Ugh-huh" arzhan 1 spectral cavalcade "oh really?" arzhan 1 spectral cavalcade "i would've thought the opposite!" arzhan 1 spectral cavalcade "That was so interesting! Okay, so there's this archaeological site..."

  • it has worked in the past, how about we just report what is happening

I'm sorry sir but such a thing does not exist, i fear you must have dreamt it.

  • Very early on i heard some commentary that putin was demanding his client state spend down large amounts of it's stockpile. And look what we have here.

  • JFC raw story! Yall just printing this conspiracy theory with no counter evidence?

Even the reddit thread they are reporting on contains compelling counter evidence they fail to report:

the user was active in PMs and modmail when ghislaine was in jail, other mods spoke to him and he's a british guy, he went silent because of this conspiracy theory, he actually posted extensively on many occasions ghislaine was at parties.

Also the story started on 4chan, which all but garauntees it's not real.

  • drug cartel that assassinates people that get in their way of delivering marihuana to you.

I don't think that was the reality of pre-legal weed, at least not much, at least here on the west coast. Most people i knew bought directly from harmless small scale operations or from someone who did. A lot of people worked chopping during harvest and got paid in weed.

Also i think large scale legal farms are much shadier and many have more connections to organized crime than you're considering.

  • People will just say whatever they think their peers want to hear. What people say doesn't tell you what they think or do.

Definitely more than 50% of people watch porn, despite this. A significant % of 'homosexuality is immoral' types have grindr accounts. Many women who say abortions are wrong also say their case was special and unique which makes it okay. That using marijuana one would definitely be higher before it become widely legal. Gambling too would've had more disapproval before private gambling rings were allowed to advertise at sport games.

These stats reflect public policy, rather than guide it (to a large extent) is my point.

  • That's a deceptive number - it's ⅔ vs ⅓.

"A third of genocide advocates are dems" paints a much more realistic picture of democratic responsibility for genocide.

"90% more genocide from republicans" makes it sound very one-sided. When in fact elite support for genocide is strongly bipartisan, it just skews R.
