Gentle nerd freak of the pacific northwest. All nation states are vermin.

  • I'd love to go back, i really want to visit like a million historical sites and food places. I've heard such good things about Hunan food. I always make sure to say "要大辣" when i order chinese here in the US, hoping they will make it proper spicy.

  • 好啊!Where in China are you from?

I studied for a semester in 云南. 好想吃米线啊!

I miss so much food from China. Stumbling home drunk and getting fried rice cooked over one of those intense burners that sound like a jet engine. All the 烧烤 was incredible. And in 云南 the 傣菜 was always so special. 🤤

Because the fediverse is small, niche communities tend to have little content and it's quite likely that most popular content will end up in your feed. I found it was helpful to subscribe to communities after i saw a post i liked from that community.

    Welcome, hope you like it!

  • I work with a deaf schizophrenic person and they talk (write, sign) about their "mind being quiet" or being "way out of my mind". When clearly experiencing symptoms they'll often look, sign, yell or kick at a specific area but can't really detail what exactly's happening in those moments.

In my experience the behavioural elements of schizophrenia would be hard to miss, i doubt visual vs non-visual hallucinations would change that.

My understanding is it can be hard to narrow down schizophrenia vs other diagnoses, but it's usually obvious that something is going on. I'd think if people were looking for blind schizophrenia cases they'd at least have a pool of likely candidates to look into.

I'm instantly skeptical of "no blind schizophrenics" but it's just gut. I can't think of any explanation.

  • Because of the US and british empires, english functions as a prestige language, the language of international trade and english language media is widespread. Many people know at least a little english, and most languages have english loan words.

Plenty of US english songs have the odd spanish word. Doesn't 小蘋果 have a korean bit? Even hebrew prayers break into aramaic every now and again.

We live in a multi-lingual world and our songs reflect that.

  • So unauthorized transport of iranian oil? Either the ship was sanctioned by the US in error or a ship that was shady enough to do sanctions-busting for Iran is also shady enough to double cross iran, work for another paymaster, or some such?

  • part of Iran’s shadow fleet, the network used to move crude outside official channels.

Iran’s explanation didn’t add much clarity. Officials said the tanker was carrying Iranian oil but had tried to exploit regional conditions. No details on what that actually means.

Pretty shady looking site. If this can be believed, it seems like story is that some kind of deniable sub-contractor in the wider shadow fleet network was doing something that caused it to be flagged as suspicious and seized by iranian officials.

  • My dad was a linguist, so he'd met chomsky at conferences when he was just a big name in linguistics, not politically. Despite being very left wing, my dad wouldn't listen to anything chomsky later had to say on politics because dad hated chomsky. Arrogant pig-headed asshole, he'd say. And when my dad called someone an asshole he specifically meant a kind of false or unempathetic rudeness.

Before the epstein files came out i told my partner I bet chomsky is in there.

That said i want to believe specialists toiling in a field they love are less likely to fall prey to this, but academia politics are known to be brutal.

  • Yeah it depends on who your heroes are for sure, but unless we're talking about like "my granma", anyone who has significant accomplishments probably has enough social status within their group to count as powerful.

  • (Here. Are. Some. Sources). These are pop articles. Below are some quotes from papers. I go on about this topic a lot!😂

"Recent evidence has demonstrated that empathic responses are modulated by social power." "high-power people show low empathic accuracy compared to low-power people" "numerous studies have shown that people with high power are less accurate in recognizing others’ emotional expressions"

"higher socioeconomic status is associated with reduced neural responses to the pain of others" "experiments using fMRI indicates that power promotes greed ... displayed decreased response in the right and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, indicating a weaker restrain of self-interest when processing receiving more than others" "Power decreases empathic concern" "powerholders may experience less distress and less compassion as well as exhibit greater autonomic emotion regulation when faced with the pain of others" "elevated power impedes accurate understanding of other people’s emotional expressions" "Elevated power is associated with heightened interest in rewards while low power is associated with increased attention to the interest of others"

"In face-to-face conversations, participants disclosed experiences that had caused them suffering. As predicted, participants with a higher sense of power experienced less distress and less compassion and exhibited greater autonomic emotion regulation when confronted with another participant's suffering."

  • Powerful people just can't help but be vile.

As you gain social power, the empathy centers in your brain are suppressed. "Power corrupts" has a neurological basis.

  • I much prefered diamond age to snow crash. I liked them both but found that snow crash started strong and didn't quite maintain.

  • Objectively untrue. He lacks the cognition to realize anything of the sort. "Mythos is so scary!!1!1" is a PR line.

  • GPL1 is not the only way to get there

Except that for the overwhelming majority, functionally everyone, they are.

I'm not a propent of the drug. I'm slightly wary, I don't want it and i don't bring it up to others. But I don't judge people who do.

It sounds like you're part of the incredibly small minority who have been able to lose weight. Congratulations! It sounds like you worked long and hard to find a regimen that works for you.

Literally 99% of obese people will never find what you found. For them, these drugs are the ONLY realistic option to perminantly lose weight. Nothing else has been shown to work in more than 1% of cases.

  • 😊 Right? It really stuck with me. One of those articles that ties together so many obvious and not so obvious pieces into a really clear picture. And in HuffPo no less!

  • Yep!

The altered hormone balance is what allows weight loss and if that reverts than so does weight loss.

I know this "you have to keep taking them" argument is big in anti-glp1 circles, but I don't think it's very good - the same is true of vitamin supplements. You have to keep taking them or the deficiency comes back. They still help.

I don't care for glp1s myself but i've heard how happy they make some, so i don't judge others' choices.

  • If you know several people who met the medical definition of obese and have perminantly left that category then you know several outliers, which is entirely possible.

But that is just not representative. Over 99% of obese people do not lose weight. Those few outliers are heavily visible and celebrated so it feels like there must be more.

  • No this predates glp1s, the article i linked is from 2018.

  • No, social factors like the price of processed vs healthy food, the amount of sugar and salt companies are allowed put in food specifically to addict consumers, the food our culture uses to celebrate, the stressors and social pressures that we know drive people towards dopamine sources like high caloric foods, cities designed to discourage walking, etc.

Edit: no one's claiming what you're saying. Individual behaviour is a factor in most disease. Focusing on the individual behaviour piece has proved to be completely ineffective at producing weightloss. That's just a fact. And yet we keep doing it like it's suddenly going to work. It won't. You could tell people not to go to work in winter so they don't catch a cold, but they won't do that.

  • Yeah for sure one child makes it a less clear example, but even post-one child, china shows the same trends as other rich nations.
