  • That's important for the initial steps, but none of that really matters if normies can't get normal everyday stuff done. Those kinds of problems are usually related to people not being familiar with a different UI or the way things work. Often, the problems are also caused by software compatibility or availability. Even if the distro looks gorgeous, but using it causes headaches, normies will switch back.

All of these issues act as barriers that prevent most people from sticking with Linux. Those who hate big tech with a burning passion are willing to tolerate such inconveniences, but must people aren't.

  • “Most cases” is doing most of the heavy lifting here. You’re clearly not like most people since you have specific aesthetic standards. Most people don’t care as long as it doesn’t look like it came from 1993.

You clearly care, and that’s why you should run something more specific. Maybe you want it to look cool out of the box, or maybe you want to configure it to your heart’s content. There are different distros for both audiences. Both of whom are definitely not like most people.

  • Interesting to you, dull to everyone else.

  • There are two main ingredients:

    1. Time
    2. Focus

Let’s start with the hummingbirds. Observe them. Give it time. Get rid of distractions. Focus on the birds. See how they look. How do they behave. Can you identify individuals? Do they visit at specific times? Focus on the details. Don’t look at your phone. Let the birds mesmerise you. Do they have habits? Dive deeper into the life of those birds. Become an expert.

This can be applied to just about anything really.

  • This is a tricky argument to make. Living under capitalism means you don’t really have much of a choice in the matter. If you could easily choose not to participate, it would become an ethical decision.

Currently, LLMs don’t really occupy that position, but soon they will. Eventually, choosing not to use an LLM will be like choosing not to use electricity today. You may not like how your electricity was made, but can you realistically choose not to use it? Most people can’t be expected to make such radical decisions based on ethical questions, because doing so would require significant sacrifices. Same with capitalism today.

Today, you can still choose to avoid LLMs, and it won’t involve massive sacrifices on your part. I wonder how long that still holds true. Regardless, I still approve of your argument, because of the trajectory we’re currently on.

  • Sounds like this could be a blog post. I would really like to read about those experiences. If you have the time, please elaborate.

  • If we assume that Claude has free rein, the quality of rsync will fall. Now the real question is: Can we realistically assume that?

What if there is a human in the loop who has decades of experience, is more than qualified to evaluate the quality of the code, spends time reviewing it, finds stupid nonsense and fixes it. You could either fix it manually or tell Claude to fix it, which results in a few more coding and review iterations until the code is good enough. If the human in the loop is a responsible person, I think it's fair to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Is that too much to ask? Not every application is developed and maintained by a lazy idiot with the programming skills and attention span of a toddler. There are serious and skilled people out there who use LLMs responsibly.

  • And even that becomes obsolete when something better emerges. What’s perceived as better depends on time and location.

  • Maybe in a hundred years. By the time this technology becomes viable, something else might have already made it obsolete.

  • Yeah, but that’s true until AI chip demand comes crashing down. Just a matter of time. AI startups can continue to funnel money to datacentres as long as investors have money. When banks decide to increase interest rates, the cascade begins.

  • This is just next level hostile design.

  • How about normal steel forks and such? They should be fine.

  • I guess it boils down to two options:

    1. Use the Steam controller and utilise workarounds to play games from other platforms. Is the controller that much nicer to justify the workarounds and the cost?
    2. Use a different controller that is compatible with everything. No janky solutions required, which is nice, but is the controller so much worse than the Steam controller that you feel like you’re missing out?
  • Those things can certainly happen, not going to deny that. So far, unfortunate events like that have been exceedingly rare, so I'll just assume that's also going to be true in the future.

It's a risk I'm willing to take. Everyday convenience of using a phone for these things is more valuable to me.

  • Yeah, that really depends on which part of the world you’re in. When I travel, I absolutely need to keep my wallet with me, since nothing works without cash.

  • Years ago, I stopped carrying my wallet everywhere. A mobile phone handles payments, so what’s the point of a wallet and a stack of cards?

A few cards can’t be digitised on my phone, so I simply tuck them into my jacket pocket. I don’t need them very often anyway, so keeping them all with me isn’t even necessary, but they’re very light, so it’s fine. I usually only have two or three cards in my jacket pocket, not the whole wallet.

Technically, I also have a wallet, but that just contains all the ancient relics I need approximately once a year. So far, I’ve just kept it in my backpack. I wonder how soon would I notice if I just left it at home.

  • More like, skip all measurements and just wing it. The first two holes on the left look like they could work, but the other holes are a total mystery. Can’t really imagine what’s going on there except someone just winging it so hard.

  • Those are pretty interesting twists too. Just look up the etymology of “tea” and “chai”. It boils down to different trade routes and dialects.

  • Well that’s just the way American English works. Diphthongs are sprinkled everywhere. Pronouncing it as /aɪˈræn/ is just following the common practices.

It would be funny if we started to pronounce America as /eɪˈmeɪr.ɪ.kə/. I think that would be a completely consistent way to say it. Lots of words get butchered the same way, so it’s only fair.
