  • Huh? Hawai'i is among the bluest states in general elections. What are you talking about? It's kind of famously a one-party state (source: I live in Hawai'i)

(Now, whether or not those who have a D next to their name are kind of closet Republicans is a different conversation)

  • I've had cats just shred the roll in their attempts. Toddlers don't care about configuration. They will unroll that paper with impunity.

  • Don't know if it's still around, but Smucker's or someone made a jar of peanut butter and jelly swirl. It was good, but yeah, the mouthfeel was off when used for the sandwich.

  • Oh man, you just reminded me of those... we don't have Trader Joe's in Hawai'i (which is kinda weird, yeah? Given their whole aesthetic and all). I've not really cared much. But you just brought to mind something they have that is truly excellent.

  • This is the first time I've ever heard of this. I'm guessing it's to help prevent the bread from soaking up the peanut butter and jelly?

  • This is the way.

  • This is one of those things my wife and I have debated back and forth for years. Aesthetically, I prefer the "under" but in terms of actual usability the "over" orientation is best. However, that being said, living in Hawai'i has brought a new insight on this subject: wind. Where we live is super breezy and we keep our windows open year-round. Rolled paper that is oriented in the "over" configuration is more liable to get blown around. The "under" configuration prevents this. But for us this only really applies to our paper towels in the kitchen.

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

Does a PBJ have a defined "up" side?

  • An open-faced sandwich is not a sandwich because nothing is being sandwiched. Unless the "open face" is part of the presentation, intended to be enclosed upon consumption.

  • If a hoagie or hero is a sandwich, then it is only logical that a hotdog is also a sandwich.

EDIT: Since my criteria here has been cited by others and this comment, as initially presented, contributes very little to the discussion, I am amending this comment with the following information: Based on Ken Burns' Baseball documentary (at least my memory of it; been a few years), the hot dog has its genesis with guys selling food outside of a baseball park. They were selling sausages that were coiled, and served on a bun. The buns ran out and so they grabbed some Italian bread sold nearby, cutting the sausages and laying them in the bread, sliced sideways. This posits that the foundational concept of the hotdog was a conventional sandwich.

  • I personally know people who voted for Trump over Kamala specifically because she was a woman. I personally know people who voted for Trump over Harris for the exact same reason

Uh... did you mean to say "Hillary" up there at some point? Because "Kamala" and "Harris" are the same person...

  • The upbeat version makes its first appearance right after the Xindi attack, iirc (or maybe it's after they learn the aftermath of it, because the attack itself was a S2 cliffhanger), which cracks me up every time. Death, destruction, we're going to war! And then that acoustic guitar starts strumming a jaunty little melody. I lose it every time I do a re-watch.

  • AWWW SNAP!

  • My first ever job was at a pet store that specialized in fish, but we also sold birds, small rodents, reptiles, and various arthropods. I used to let a large rose hair tarantula crawl on me at the register (when the suburbanites came in to buy dog food they'd basically throw the money at me out of fear). Loved the millipedes! They feel cool the way they grip your skin with their legs.

I live in Hawai'i and we have giant centipedes. Absolute nightmare fuel. Giant millipedes are cute. The centipedes are like armored robot snakes with legs. And if you're wearing black slippers (what we call "flip flops" out here), them buggahs will run for your feet thinking that it's a dark crevice in which to hide.

  • I started using Ecosia after noticing DDG's downward turn. So far I've enjoyed it. It has problems, but I think those problems are just what passes for the internet these days...

  • I've never seen it. I'm 43 and I've wanted to, just... never did. But I found a copy of the final cut on BluRay for like $7 the other day and will probably finally watch it this weekend some time. I'm actually pretty stoked.

  • This right here.

  • Grok, is this true?

  • Legit ethical question: since LLMs are trained on stolen knowledge and art, is stealing an AI book theft? Also, given the current US laws about how an AI "work" cannot be copyrighted, what's to stop me from taking someone's AI "book" and just slapping my name on the cover and reselling it?
