I hate strawmen.

Disclaimer: not really The King

  • I'm out of my depth 😵‍💫 I just assumed 30 series was better than 40

  • Are you telling me that Christianity isn't pushing homophobic and anti trans hate rhetoric?

It's quite interesting how the most hateful people barely attend church

Are you next going to tell me that Christianity hasn't been the harbinger of some of the worst atrocities ever committed?

Well, let's google the worst atrocities ever committed:

Granted, this result was given by Gemini:

But yes, Christianity had very little to nothing to do with these. Interestingly, Atheism's Antitheism did. How peculiar!

Let's look at what the world's largest organised religion was doing during the second world war, and every decade since.

I agree that ideology is a better term, but given that ideology is a superset of religion, my point still stands, but is expanded. As for donating. Perhaps we shouldn't fucking need to donate to charities. Also, want to talk about specifics? Salvation fucking army? I'm not going to start searching for counterpoints to your specific cherry picked statements as I'm tired and don't care enough to argue with strangers.

I don't know what you're yapping about here. What about the Salvation army?

and don't care enough to argue with strangers.

Yeah, I can tell. You can't actually back up the nonsense you are spewing.

You could ask your CEO for more info, I think he goes by Pope something or other. I don't care.

Are you talking about the dude my church excommunicated nearly 500 years ago?

If you have an issue with that guy, argue against Roman Catholicism. Not Christianity or Religion as a whole. But we've dealt with him. And I don't think The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Daniel Centre Church has much to do with him either.

One thing that really annoys me is when somebody says "God told me to tell you ..."

Now sounds like you have an issue with charismatics. Nothing to do with the pope guy most of the time.

If you have a belief in a higher power, then good for you. Follow your own belief though, not what somebody tells you is the way.

How can I know the way?

Also, don't tell me that it makes you better than me because you donate to charity. Go look at where most charity finding gets spent.

I chose a random charity, Tearfund:

    https://www.tearfund.org/get-involved/donate/where-your-money-goes

And lying about this kind of thing is a serious criminal offence with large fines and lengthy prison time.

  • Rarely hear about religions actually giving their money away.

Yeah, because it doesn't get as much clicks online.

Committed Christians donate almost five times the UK monthly giving average.

Compared with the average for adults in England (17%), Jewish adults (31%), adults from the Any other religion classification (23%), Buddhist adults (20%) and Christian adults (20%) were more likely to participate in formal volunteering at least once a month. Adults from the No religion classification (14%), Hindu adults (14%) and Muslim adults (15%) were less likely to participate in formal volunteering at least once a month compared with the average for adults in England (17%).

The average annual giving among the religious is $2,210, whereas it is $642 among the secular. Similarly, religious people volunteer an average of 12 times per year, while secular people volunteer an average of 5.8 times. To put this into perspective, religious people are 33 percent of the population but make 52 percent of donations and 45 percent of times volunteered. Secular people are 26 percent of the population but contribute 13 percent of the dollars and 17 percent of the times volunteered.

Individual churches might, but the religion as a whole - nah.

What does this even mean. In terms of Christianity, it consists of individual churches. Sure, some are under a bishop in an episcopal structure, some are in association in presbyterian structures, some are independent and run by their congregations. Then there are different communions, but Christianity is a pretty decentralised religion. In a secular sense, there is no CEO of Christianity. Christians would hold the position of course that it's God Himself, but from a secular viewpoint, they're all individual independent churches, generally structured differently.

Throughout history religion society has just been a way to consolidate power and dominate populations. They have been responsible for some of the worst atrocities ever committed, and generally take from those who have the least whilst promising a glorious afterlife if they can suffer in this life.

Ftfy. People have done this in the name of any ideology, political, religious, or even anti-religious. And even if you're anti-theist, or atheist, that's still a religious position. And people have used that to kill and control as well (ie, politicians trying to reduce religion so people will surrender their religious morals and adapt political ones). You're acting as if "religion" is just one behemoth everything-is-the-same, it really, really isn't. Some religions have their adherents go and deprive themselves in a monastery, some have their adherents proselytise. Some have their adherents give all to a good cause, some have their adherents work for them. Some religions have a human leader, some are a movement using a sacred philosophy. And there are many in-betweens and mixing of these concepts. Your view on this whole subject is very uneducated, shallow, and reddit-y.

Even now the largest religion in the world still hoards their wealth like a venerable dragon sitting on their piles of gold, deep in their mountain lair.

Okay, where is this pile of gold exactly? Who's benefitting from it, considering this religion has no earthly leader. Considering that the charitable work they carry out is world-renowned as well, is a very interesting claim you're making.

Even now the largest religion in the world continues to hide and protect paedophiles within their ranks.

    1. A lot of them have been convicted and exposed, so not necessarily.
    2. Every organisation does this. Businesses, political parties, etc. It's not unique to religious institutions at all.

As to historical buildings. You did know that the largest religion in the world is one of the wealthiest entities, mainly due to convincing lots of the poorest people in society to donate what they can't afford so that the church doesn't have to spend.

Hate to break it to you, but the scammers aren't operating out of historical buildings. They're operating out of bland conference centres and repurposed sports arenas.

This exact Church I've looked up is operating out of a community centre. The photo in the article shows a sports hall as their nave.

I doubt St Barnabas's Parish in the village of Dibley with a total of ten parishoners is going to be able to approach The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Daniel Centre Church for funds to fix their roof.

In conclusion, you should make a business out of selling strawmen. Or maybe one teaching people how to talk about a subject they don't understand and haven't done an ounce of research in.... Although for the latter, you're pretty poor at that.

  • These numbers don't make sense

  • Can it compete with a 3080?

  • lmao

    I love this platform

  • not a fan of any organised religion, as most of them are pretty much money grabbing scams.

Bit of a strawman here. Generally, most churches aren't and donate excess money to charity, or possess a historical building which needs to be maintained. My parish didn't even break even for the past three years and had to lay off a few workers. You only hear about the money grabbing scams because you aren't in this world, and that's the news that gets out. "Church raises money for foodbank" isn't really headline news versus this headline.

To answer your other question: people tend to look down on African and Asian cultures thinking that they know better than their "savage" ways. In reality, Nigerians tend to just have a different cultural attitude surrounding homosexuality, and this comment was likely something stupid that originated from said clash of cultures. We can't really say definitively that there are superior cultures, as that goes into racism.

  • Eh, no need to be racist. If this is a Nigerian church, then we're probably being unfair towards them in this case.

  • China please 🥺🙏

  • Using the Lord's Name in vain is blasphemy

  • Will this pop the bubble?

  • Oh yeah, I agree it isn't news. But there's nothing wrong with a husband being proud of his wife. Again, that is probably not news either. "Breaking news: Husband is proud of his wife for fighting illness" isn't anything surprising.

There was a news article a number of days ago talking about how The King has a sticker on one of his cars which was making a "big statement" and shows what "he really thinks" then reveals that the sticker said "save the red squirrel". That is the most predictable, mundane, unsurprising sticker for Charles III to have.

I heard an anecdote of a countryside estate which was going to be visited by Charles when he was still Prince of Wales. They captured a red squirrel from the estate and deliberately released it as he approached a building, so it crossed the Prince's path. Was pretty funny.

  • Aren't these corporations not the reason that we need these laws to begin with?

  • It's basically like someone said a Facebook comment out loud

  • I'd be surprised if they said something sensible. Found this plan they have on the article:

"In Jesus name, Amen!" Like it's some form of magic words such as "abracadabra"

  • Was worried it was something actually prominent until I saw the name

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Daniel Centre Church

Ah, so it's moreso a church, but a charity because basically every church functions as a charity.

Also of course... The name... Definitely hyper charismatic...
