  • Lemmy is basically a failure IMHO.

Reddit is mostly a superior experience for users

If you really think this and don't think Lemmy will get better then you should be using Reddit instead of Lemmy.

  • if you have a ‘liberal space’ and some conservative attempts to bring fascist ideas to the table, they are not flat out rejected. they are admonished for the facts inherent in fascism.

In the process of doing that admonishing you are inherently changing the kinds of conversations that happen in that space.

Sometimes it okay to take some positions for granted so you can have deeper conversations about specific ideas and that only happens when there is agreement about certain facts.

Constant disagreement paralyzes action and is the same tactic that people use to sterilize social movements.

  • That is actually pretty close to how I was thinking about it. I'm just wondering if there is a balance to it all that we can find. Like if existing necessarily causes harm how much of that is necessary and how much of it is exploitation.

I mean the closest philosophical position that I've seen in relation to it is peter singer's position but that seems exclusive to human-human relations (Edit 3: apparently also animal liberation).

Edit: Also if I was to focus on invasive species again currently we say that because something is an invasive species we should kill or stop them because they are causing damage to the existing ecosystem. Which makes sense to me it is reducing the diversity and possibilities for that space but on an individual level you would be saying that oh your existence is harming other creatures in the area so we need to kill you to make space for others which seems somewhat inhumane?

So the question sort of translates to what level of focus are you judging the value of something at?

Edit 2: Another thing I have against peter singer's position is that it's too utilitarian

  • AskBeehaw @beehaw.org

How would this hypothetical person behave?

  • I think that will change over time as developers choose specific features/platforms to work on and when admins start customizing how their instance displays info more heavily instead of just cosmetic or federation changes.

  • Personally something that I would love to see is a lot of Temporary autonomous zones popping up at once and staying up for as long as possible and moving to another area if necessary. This way people are able to one learn/practice how to live together without the government so when those services start to fail or become hostile they will have alternatives. It will also be important for these spaces to be defend-able and movable.

  • Yeah, I hope that no one that answers this gives full detailed plans I just want to know that I am not alone in feeling that we need to change our behaviour and hopefully prompt others to start thinking about what they are going to do. Things are fundamentally different now.

Edit: Also get some books on intentional communities and group survival while you're at it.

Edit2: Sorry just looked at the title didn't read the text. I mean you could try sorting by category or you could get an online list from a librarian about queer books and then manually download from that list of books.

Edit3: You might also be able to ask for help from the person who made this list: https://openlibrary.org/collections/LGBTQ. Most of the books seem to come from the internet archive which makes it easier for a mass download I believe.

  • Curating this volume of content is impossible, and there are legitimate dangers in giving the government too much ability to shut down free speech

Agreed. We have already given more than enough control to the government in other areas of our lives. We now have alternative social platforms that give us a chance to actually have more direct control over our media landscape which hasn't been true in such a long time.

you have to build a society that doesn’t want to engage with bigotry, and explore and question its own assumptions (and that’s not ever a fixed state, it’s an ongoing process).

I think this is what they were trying to get across when they mention media ecology. They were pointing out how the structure of where media is shared and its sources can be more important for quashing disinformation than the actual content itself.

So when something is shared through YouTube there are certain pressures that over time mold the source of information into a specific format.

I'd say the same is true of the Fediverse as well. That's why its important we get the structure here right because it will determine what kind of platform this place turns into.

    Edit: grammar

  • Yeah there has also been an increase in the amount of companies either making FLOSS work more closed off or just not caring about them if it benefits their bottom line.

Unrelated I like your new profile pic.

  • Thx for the feedback. If I was to try this what do you think I could do get black rather than brown dye? Would I have to use flowers that are closer to cyan, magenta, and yellow so it is closer to the cmyk color model or does that not help?

Also yeah idk if the contrast problem could be solved.

Trying to do say three layers would then take six hours, so whatever you’re using as a mask has to be super absorbent or reflective to UV (think very thick black paper or tinfoil). Anything else, and your underlying layers are going to bleach somewhat.

Do I need to do it in multiple layers? Also I was planning on trying to use the paper as a replacement for photo paper in pinhole photography with it instead of a mask.
