  • It shouldn’t be a crime to send my child to a better school system than I can afford to live in.

I live in a poor area of Alabama, I’d give almost anything to be able to pack my shit and get my children to a better school district.

  • Man I was looking at one of the Bambus to supplement my old Monoprice Maker Select. I was hoping to something with less fuss.

  • Ditto. My homemade Mac mini file server just bit me with an APFS drive corruption. Needing to get something put together with redundancy. Like NOW! and these shit heads are killing the market!

  • We made it work for several months with our EV and a Level 1 charger cable ran out the back door before I could get the time to install the level 2 charger. For regular commuting around town, the wall plug would keep up. For longer trips, we would have had problems and had to have sought out level 3 chargers until we got the level 2 install finished. Level 2 charging at home was a game and cured range anxiety for us.

  • If only it were that simple.

  • That sounds really similar to our setup. kWh rates for consumers are about 16.5 cents per kWh, but they’ll buy your excess at 3.94 cents per kWh. So 23.8% of what you pay them. Plus, the $5/kW fee for firm backup capacity I mentioned earlier.

The charlatans came out last summer and said we would start to have rolling blackouts if we didn’t all set our thermostats to 80 or 82 degrees (27.78 C), I can’t remember the exact amount, but the collective consensus was that if they’ll all set their thermostats in their boardrooms to 82, then we’d talk about it. You and I both know that wasn’t going to happen. They always talk about us having to be conservative on energy usage in the summers, but they don’t let us offset our loads with solar or anything else. And Alabama, as I’m fairly certain Pakistan probably does also, has an abundance of sunshine in the summer. And they’ve never curtailed my employer (a large manufacturing plant) or any of the local steel mills on energy consumption. And you can guarantee they won’t do the data centers either. It’s always you and I bearing the brunt of their poor decisions.

  • Apple’s APFS I am not a fan of. I have been using Macs since 2008-ish. In all my HFS+ days, I’ve never lost an entire drive. I rebooted my M2 Mac Mini via command prompt, and my external APFS drive is corrupted. Never had that problem before APFS. And since I’m an idiot, I’ve got to pay DiskDrill to hopefully recover the data when I get a larger drive on hand.

  • I am stuck in Alabama-Stan. Our presumed next governor is a MAGAt. We bought an EV last year (used VW id4) to get my wife something to get the kids everywhere in. I have taken her old car (a 2006 VW Jetta TDI) and am using it as my commuter car for work, 60 miles a day. It has drastically lowered our footprint, as they replaced our primary family and commuter vehicle, my old Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. My wallet appreciates the lower costs of both cars to get around, CO2 per mile is substantially less, and even having our local utility company screwing us on rates, it’s still cheaper and greener.

We are unfortunately the least solar friendly state in the US. There is no net metering, and our utility company charges you per kw capacity of your system to keep a backup in case they have to provide you with power. I have plans for that, I’m on vacation this all and hope I have time to sit down and draw up a reasonably diy solar system for us. I DESPISE our corrupt utility company and would like nothing better than to never have to give them money again.

  • I’m waiting for it to get the id.Buzz. I want one of them badly. Can’t wait!

  • The wife and I love her Volkswagen id4. It is comfy, gets good mileage, and is cheap on the used market.

  • Not to discourage you, and I’m not sure if LORA you’re referring to is LORA-WAN that we were implementing at my employer, but we abandoned it for cost and manufacturer support (firmware support issues).

  • Bought it yesterday. Been enjoying it so far. What settings are you guys running and how’s battery life? I suspect battery problems on my deck, I got MAYBE 20 minutes out of it before it shut down in my second mission.

  • I upgraded from a mid 2012 13” MBP upgraded to within an inch of its life to an m3 Air 15”. I’ve loved my old mbp for years, but the increased size of the 15” display makes it better for me. My vision continues to worsen and I’m not getting any younger. The thinness of this machine makes up for the slightly bigger bulk from the larger screen to me, at least compared to my 2012 model. And the weight is ridiculously better.

  • Continuum was ok, but Motorola’s Atrix 4G had a lap dock even earlier. It was an outdated version of Ubuntu, if I remember, but it worked. I still miss WP though.

  • That sounds expensive? Just browsing the unifi site, and looking at one camera is $300. I'm trying to get away from my Blink and Ring systems due to privacy issues, but that's a tough pill to swallow! Either way, with the way things are going, I want off of Blink and Ring and want something self hosted myself.

  • I wish I shared your optimism.

  • Apple @lemmy.world

Which Macbook and mini as home media server/backup target

  • My mid 2012 has been upgraded to the max. It's got the 2.9GHz dual core i7, 16 GB RAM, 4 tb of storage thanks to a data doubler, and is running MacOS 14.4. I've been getting kernel panics lately, and sometimes struggle getting it to turn on, I'm afraid it's getting time to retire it. It's unfortunate, but this has been an outstanding laptop for me. I dual boot windows and macos on it. Perhaps I'll put fedora on it shortly and see if it behaves any better.

  • My 6 pro won't slow charge until after 10pm I've noticed. My alarm is at 04:30, so if I start charging at bedtime, 08:30ish, it doesn't slow charge. It's weird that way. Already on my second 6p, my first I've died one night, woke up with a flashing gray white screen, and it was hot. Got it rmad thankfully.

  • I had this same discussion at work. My employer is full office 365 and SharePoint for everything. Teams is a catch-all app that does a lot, but none of it well.
