  • Funny how libs rarely have to compromise their core values to vote for Dem candidates, while your party leadership aggressively prevents the left from gaining any purchase in the party organizational structure, but you have the gall to demand our votes while showing zero sensitivity for the left’s moral concerns about Dem projects like the ongoing extirpation of Palestinians in Gaza—not to mention the left’s very reasonable observation that concessionary voting for neolibs since Carter has created a ratcheting of American politics to the far right.

    I don’t believe Trump will break America, because the Democratic Party clearly doesn’t. No party that believed that so much was on the line would prevent a competitive primary and support a VP candidate with the lowest approval rating in history, who has no constituency behind her, when the top of the ticket is 81 years old.

  • This is a knowable thing that a bunch of us have personally witnessed since ‘76. Dems at the height of their power have not raced to deliver a full tranche of left legislation. Instead, they game to “not go too far,” and the GOP retakes because voters’ lives were not radically improved, and the difference between the parties isn’t particularly visible, beyond a few social issues.

  • The performance envelopes of vehicles sharing bike lanes these days are wildly different. I dread the day that RTO is complete, and rush-hour bike lanes are shared by e-bikes, e-unicycles, one-wheels, push scooters, e-standup-scooters, smaller sit-scooters, monkey bikes, e-skateboards, skateboards, and whatever else I’m missing.

  • Years ago, I heard an NPR piece about a French -ologist of some kind, who was revolutionizing advertising in the States, and he mentioned a small car that consumers viewed as saying “Rape me!” We are all driving around in jacked up station wagons, because of some weird, atavistic urges to feel inviolable and cosseted.

    Fundamentally, SUVs are an inefficient design for a passenger car. Even small crossovers, and I drive one myself, are inefficient relative to a station wagon offering the same volume and space for passengers and cargo.

    SUVs burn relatively more gas, they use more tires, they damage roads more, they are less controllable due to higher centers of gravity, they have poorer visibility of pedestrians and cyclists, and they require shitloads of engineering just to hide their shitty performance and safety characteristics.
