  • Except for the ones that intersect.

  • To be fair, Google had the ability many years before ChatGPT was released to release a similar product but they purposefully didn't, and instead they only used it internally. And then when OpenAI did their release Google was one of the voices calling for moderation. They released Bard because otherwise they were going to be left behind, and likely have lawsuits from investors.

  • Do you want to live in a country with a dictatorship like that? I don't.

Uh, I've got some bad news for you ...

  • I have my local LLM currently setup and it runs just as well as Sonnet 4.6 from a quality standpoint, and for performance it is slightly slower but it's still faster than I can respond.

This is with a Strix Halo APU with 128GB unified memory using the latest Qwen3.6 models with llama.cpp.

  • Bin Laden was #1 on the FBI's most wanted list for years. Everyone knew he was a threat. And 9/11 wasn't the first time that al qaeda trained militants attacked the World Trade Center... it was bombed during the Clinton / Gore administration. Years later they attacked US Embassies, and instead of sending troops in to try to get Bin Laden, instead they launched missiles at an al qaeda training camp. Then all qaeda attacked the USS Cole, and again the US government under both Clinton / Gore and Bush did little to nothing as a response. Clinton/ Gore had 8 years to go after all qaeda and did very little... Bush had 8 months.

The issue wasn't that the US government (under either administration) didn't take it seriously, the issue was that the FBI, NSA and CIA weren't communicating the information they had... and that's what the Department of Homeland Security was supposed to help resolve. The mission of DHS was good... the (lack of) guardrails, was not.

  • Al Gore being President would not have stopped 9/11... that was a ball set in motion long before the 2000 election.

The response to 9/11 might have been different since the Clinton / Gore administration had tended to deal with international terror attacks on the US as criminal matters rather than acts of war... but up until then none of the terror attacks had been anywhere near as successful at 9/11, so it is entirely possible that Gore would have had a similar response as Bush in Afghanistan. And the Patriot Act and Homeland Security came from Congress, which would have been the same makeup no matter who the President was.

What would have been different is we very likely would not have gone to war with Iraq, and we possibly could have ended up breaking ties with Saudi Arabia, if not going to war with them, over 9/11. The loss of Saudi Arabia as an 'ally' would have been a huge benefit for green infrastructure in the US.

  • We have a 'Lunch & Learn' at noon every other Friday... "No Actual Lunch Provided". There's no set agenda, just for people in IT throughout the company to get together and talk about anything tech related they want to discuss. It doesn't even have to be work related.

It actually sounds like a fun meeting that I'd love to attend, but... Friday is my Pad Thai day, and I'm not missing that.

  • My favorite Scrabble win was using 'eBay'... before playing that word I looked at the instruction sheet and it specifically said that "words that begin with a capital" are not allowed. There were some sour grapes after that one.

  • Should my foot be put in prison because my finger pulled the trigger?

I hate trump... but I'm an American and as such, yes, I'm partially to blame for him and I accept that most of the rest of the world would agree.

  • This is how we play... and it has resulted in some VERY long games.

Once we had some friends over and their 8 year old son was playing with us. He almost won a few times, but his dad did everything in his power to keep him from winning. It was close to midnight before that game ended and it was the first time I considered changing the house rules.

  • Which Zahn books? The Heir to the Empire or the newer Thrawn trilogy? I love both, and I feel like they've done an incredible job with Rebels, Ahsoka, Mandalorian... really all of the tv shows (though I haven't watched Maul yet). I would love for them to continue telling these stories and have the original characters just show up where it makes sense... like Luke coming to collect Grogu for training. Maybe have Han and Chewy running a cantina left to him by Lando. Ewoks starting the process of joining the New Republic and electing representatives. And Wedge... well, he had enough of war and no one has heard from him in many years.

They don't need to keep telling stories about Luke... the remarkable part of his life happened when he was young, now he's doing the boring and difficult work of rebuilding the Jedi Order. There's no exciting story there, but he can be in the background of other characters who are doing remarkable things.

  • Ukraine is doing a ceasefire May 5 & 6 and Russia is doing a ceasefire May 8 & 9.

May 7th would be a good day to call in sick.

  • You come to the comments and see if anyone has a good summary of it yet.

    They don't.

  • Maybe don't invade your neighbors.

  • The Linux phone is like Iranian nukes... always just right around the corner.

  • That how I feel... but I only ever talk about it to a very small number of people. No one needs to know my shit.

  • “They are living, sentient beings, and if we have the ability to save them through a safe and humane solution, we have a responsibility to try.”

So I'm only going to offer to save half of them.

But seriously, I'm glad he's able to help. I wish he could find a way to keep them where they are while also protecting the local environment because the story of these hippos is great and could be a nice tourism draw for Columbia, but even saving some from culling is a good thing.

  • Last night I decided to try Little-Coder to work on a game that I've had in the 'plannng' phase for a while. I had a few issues getting Little-Coder to work with my system, but once it was working I pointed it to the project fact sheet in my Obsidian vault and told it to get familiar with the project and ask any questions. It had a few questions and then wanted to know if I wanted it to get started on a prototype for the gameplay. The game is a narrative driven politics game and I asked it to create the prototype as a brower game. It ran for about 40 minutes and then had the working prototype. There were a couple of bugs with some buttons not working, but those were easy to fix.

This is really impressive. I'm making this game for my daughter and I let her play the prototype (which is very repetitive at this point since the 'narrative' hasn't really been written yet) and she loved it. She played it for about 15 minutes before realizing that it had started repeating. I've been working on the game all day today and she came in a bit ago and asked when she can play again.

And thanks for that video on Qwen3.6 27 dense... I might have to throw my system at it and see how it handles things.
