  • Not necessarily. It is known that some vitamins can have differing effects depending on whether they're in whole food form, or in a supplement.

Haven't read the article yet, but my suspicion would be more correlation than causation. Those industrially manufactured ascorbic acids virtually always end up in highly processed foods, and that's what is more likely the main harm.

  • If it's not open source as much as reasonably possible, it's ultimately no better than Android. Kind of annoyed that distinctions need to be made between "real" Linux and "fake" Linux.

  • Very much not true. Arcade sticks are still popular in precision platformer and fighting game circles, because the underlying mechanics and tactile feedback are conducive to precise inputs. Analog sticks are the antithesis of that.

Some people in those communities do choose to use sticks, but most prefer either dpad, arcade stick, or leverless these days.

  • People in the west need to adopt more Buddhist language. One facet of empathy often overlooked is sympathetic or appreciative joy, also known as mudita, one of the four brahma viharas. Empathy doesn't always have to be about negatives, and mudita is a good inoculant against envy.

  • Yeah admittedly building still largely has the best price to performance ratio. This is why I have never been able to bring myself to buy a gaming laptop even though I really want one. Too many compromises for too high of a price.

Depending on what the next Steam Machine is like, and how it's priced, I still might build my own again. I would only get the former if they price it really competitively. But if it's too much, I might hold off on buying a new system all together until something breaks with all these price raises.

  • I have never heard a person talk about empathy introspectively. Invariably it has been about how someone else needs to be more empathetic, and almost always, the speaker would hypothetically be the beneficiary of this increased empathy.

  • Yup, when that became mandatory on all consoles, I stopped buying consoles.

  • Been reading Fiber Fueled during work breaks. Wanting to take extra steps to dial in my gut health.

I haven't listened to it in a while, but I'm pretty far into the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Really great listen, kind of a dark comedy, numbers go up (it's a lit rpg), and there's a bit of moral complexity in the plot.

Should also note, Jeff Hays is now my favorite audiobook narrator.

  • It is definitely not European-specific. US, and likely plenty of other countries, have the same problem. Factory farming is frankly insanity no matter how you look at it.

  • I love what RetroFighters does, but I wish they would design their Dreamcast controller to fit a vmu, and add a second analog stick while they're at it. Dreamcast still has so much homebrew potential, but the lack of dual analog inouts holds it back.

  • Gulikit ES Pro is easily my favorite Xbox-style controller. It's almost identical to the Xbox Series controller, but everything about it is a little better. The dpad is as accurate and tactile, and not as loud. It uses tmr sticks.

It uses bluetooth for wireless, but it's kind of miraculously low latency for being bluetooth, and rivals most 2.4 controllers in latency tests.

But to be fair I have never been able to bring myself to spend $200+ on a controller. This one is only $30.

  • I got disenchanted with PC building after my first and last build. It had benefits, like being able to buy one component at a time instead of spending a bunch at once (except now it's spending a bunch many times to build). Reparability is nice too.

But my issue is that despite getting what were some of the best components at the time, I'm at a place where virtually every part needs an upgrade, so I may as well build a whole new PC, and why bother if that's the case?

If the upcoming Steam Machine is less than $1000, I am probably getting one.

  • I was working at a woodworking factory for a while, which involved strenuously tightening these tension screw things every day. One day I became frustrated with the apparent lack of quality in the plastic screw-lid for a bottle of shampoo I had just gotten, because I easily tightened it so far that the bottle snapped the top of the lid right off.

Then I realized what was really going on when I did the same thing to three other bottles of things. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Muscle size is only somewhat of a predictor of muscle strength. It is very possible to be stronger than someone with bigger muscles if you are doing things that target maximal strength specifically.

  • Virtually nobody in industrialized nations have protein deficiency, and when they do, it's more of a symptom of general starvation.

By contrast, 97% of Americans do not meet even the minimum daily requirements for fiber, which is already considered too low of a bar.

We should not be asking where we get our protein - because seriously, if you are eating any reasonable balance of actual food, and getting enough calories, you are getting enough protein!*

We should be asking: Where are you getting your fiber?

    * not counting fitness specialists whose diets have more specific needs.

  • It often doesn't work in the sense that people try to achieve a calorie deficit by eating less, which causes their appetite to increase significantly. Many people are unable to resist overeating in our industrialized societies that constantly bombard us with addictive foods. So yes, a calorie deficit is necessary, but it's also necessary to have a way to deal with appetite or else maintaining a calorie deficit becomes unsustainable.

That's why plant-centric diets are a great choice - you can eat as much as you want to satiety, and still be able to lose weight.

  • Take a cardboard box and grind it into powder, and tell me which one takes up less space. Of course anything blended is going to be more calorie dense.
