  • It really does illustrate how easily we as humans are swayed by charisma and aesthetics over reason or morality. You can flat out commit war crimes and there will still be people defending you as long as you have confidence and a smile.

Also, not that I disagree with your last point, but how many chuds do you think are watching Steven Universe in the first place? lol

  • Haven’t seen The Boys, but just from the headline and the memes I’ve seen about the show, I’m guessing this is similar to how people disliked Light Yagami’s death in Deathnote

People don’t like watching their favorite romanticized villain die a pathetic death

  • I’m male and definitely in the “I CANT TURN MY BRAIN OFF IT NEVER STOPS” category. I’ve also definitely met a few women who are able to just tune things out.

Perhaps you just have a thing for women with ADHD/Anxiety

  • I have never heard of that before. That’s an interesting condition.

To be fair it sounds like it’s not technically a difference in qualia that was noticed but a difference in the properties of qualia. Still the main point remains. You were able to notice a difference, doctors were able to measure the difference, and we made a word for the condition.

  • As always, I’d like to make the comment that if something cannot be described it is not relevant to be described.

It’s impossible to tell whether you see the same qualia I do when I see the color blue. However, it would only be relevant to know that if for some reason I had to know it. If there was an application for that knowledge then there would be a testable way to prove it right or wrong. In which case, there’d be a way for me to know it because either I get it right or get it wrong.

Secondly, if there is any measurable/testable property to be known, then it can be described.

The most fundamental form of “measurement” or description is simply difference. If you experience anything, if there exists some thing as part of existence, then it must in some way be different than something else which also exists. Otherwise they’d be the same thing.

Can you understand the term “difference” ? Can you create names/words/references to things? Congratulations you can describe everything that can possibly exist.

(You can construct the words/ideas of sameness, properties, classes, etc. from the idea of difference which makes language much easier and less verbose than using only the word “difference” over and over and over again lol)

  • But I couldn’t go on living after I heard what the girders were for

  • While non locality is weird, it can’t actually be used to transmit information. Any attempt to force an entangled particle into another state breaks the entanglement. So you can’t really transmit any information between the two.

  • The last time I needed to do this (I got medicated shortly after) the first few episodes of Helluva Boss were coming out and several of those characters are quite… eccentric which makes it easier (and more fun) to hear them in your head as you do a stupid task.

If you have anxiety about the task, watching The Witcher might be a better option. That was my go-to for socially anxious tasks like going to the laundromat. Become Geralt and suddenly it is no longer frightening to do laundry but tedious to the point you’re too annoyed to be socially anxious lol

  • Mentioned it before but: Watch a show with crazy but functional characters until mirror-neurons/code-switching/whatever-the-hell-it-is kicks in and you start being able to act and think like them. Then do the task as that character. The more unhinged the character the better because then it’s just fun to kinda larp them in your head as you do your task, and it takes your mind off of the task itself but still gets you to do the task.

Also very helpful for writing essays btw. Like if normally you write essays “like a robot” just pick someone who speaks with charisma and write the essay in the way you think they would. I’m not joking, it really helps

  • If you follow the comment chain you’ll see me and cowbee talk about how subjective the term “democracy” is.

However, we can illustrate my point using proof by counter example. It is entirely possible to imagine two countries with the same government structure (and hence “democracy”) but with different answers to this kind of survey.

Imagine two nearly identical countries each with corrupt governments having the exact same structure and culture etc. The only major difference between them is that in one of the countries, a recent scandal has occurred which was able to bring to light deep seated corruption and criminal activity of many public figures, whereas similar acts are being committed by the govt. of the other country, but none of it has been brought so fully to light yet.

The citizens of the former country are likely to rank their “democracy” lower than the citizens of the latter would rate their own, despite the fact both governments have equal amounts of corruption. Hence, surveys of popular opinion of democracy are not directly indicative of the “level of democracy” or level of corruption or fidelity etc. etc.. QED.

  • Haha funnily enough that’s the graph I first had this argument with cowbee about lol

  • that’s why I put quotes around “level of democracy.” If everyone in a country had to vote directly for any and all government action, that is kind of the purest democracy possible, but it would not be a very effective method of government especially for large countries.

In order to rank democracy in a meaningful way, one would need to decide on what the desired outcomes of a “good” democracy are and which outcomes are most important etc. which would make the scale subjective.

  • Direct comparison of perception of democracy by people who have lived in both countries would be much clearer evidence of differences in democracy itself.

However, the raw perception of democracy without any other reference to other democracies does not allow for comparison/measurement of democracy itself but rather indicates how happy individuals feel within their current democracy.

The data is a good story and it does encode information, but that information is more significantly influenced by culture, current events, and overall happiness of the populace than it is by “level of democracy”

  • As always, I would like to point out that these kinds of surveys of public opinion are not really evidence of anything besides public opinion itself.

You cannot assert that a certain country has more or less of some quality simply because more people in that country said they think they do more frequently than people in a different country did.

For example if you asked Americans (particularly those in the south or rural areas) if they thought their country was more “free” than the rest of the world, you would probably get higher numbers than you would from most other regions of the world despite the fact that America is not that free relative to much of the world.

  • this is why choosing a major was hard for me. The list of majors I wouldn’t find interesting was way smaller than the list of majors I thought would be fascinating.

I really kinda hate that you have to choose a specific career path so early on. Sure you’re not forced to stay in that field and with some fields (like mech eng.) you can branch out a lot, but it’s not really easy to get a job that requires a degree other than the one you have.

  • We had a really old tv in my basement when I was young. If you messed with the hue knob while on a non existent channel you could get a lot more colorful static

  • Actually the typical first line drug is methylphenidate (Ritalin).

Aderall is prescribed less because it has more “abuse potential” for neurotypical people. It’s a mix of levo and dextroamphetamine. The mix of chiralities is useful because your body has to convert the left handed version to right handed before it can cause any neurological effects. This means a significant part of the dose doesn’t even kick in immediately which reduces negative side effects and allows the therapeutic effects to last longer. The anions used are also typically varied to slow the uptake.

Methamphetamine may look similar to dextroemphetamine but that extra methyl group makes it significantly faster acting and much much stronger than dextroamphetamine. Both of which contribute to its use as a recreational drug and its potential for addiction and withdrawal. The use of HCl as the anion (crystal meth) rather than a sulfate or sugar also significantly reduces the uptake time which further increases the acting speed and strength of the effect. That’s why meth isn’t prescribed for ADHD, and why you would need to take a shit ton of Adderall to come even close to it.

It is fascinating how the word “amphetamines” conjures up images of junkies, when most people I know on adderall forget to take it or just don’t take it because they don’t like the side effects like having a dry mouth. People were always warning me “You can get addicted” bro I have to constantly remind myself to take it and if I stop taking doses I get the opposite of withdrawal where I know I should take it but also I don’t really want to.

It honestly weirds me out that adderall can be abused in the first place. Like I know my meds are wearing off because I’ll start laughing more easily. That’s like the complete opposite of what this is supposed to do..? Or sometimes I’ll take a dose and get sleepy which again tf? Brains are weird.

  • ah yes, that must be why I frequently forget to take it lol

  • If we want to test your assertion you would need to define “The way we do in the west” because I’m reasonably certain none of the countries shown in red have the exact same laws around lobbying.

With regards to “kneeling to fossil fuels,” I’m pretty sure there are more factors at play in that issue than just the laws surrounding lobbying specifically.
