Journalist Nicholas Kristof angered Prime Minister Netanyahu by providing testimony of Israel's use of dogs toremoved detained Palestinians
The Israeli Prime Minister's Office announced on 14 May that it is launching a defamation lawsuit against the New York Times (NYT) following its publication of a column by journalist Nicholas Kristof detailing the systematicremoved and sexual assault of Palestinian detainees by Israeli guards.
In a statement posted on X, the Prime Minister's Office described Kristoff's column, which cited testimony from Palestinianremoved victims and Israeli human rights groups, as “one of the most hideous and distorted lies ever published against the State of Israel in the modern press.”
Israel demanded the “immediate” removal of the column, claiming it was published “in service of a Hamas-driven narrative.”
Kristoff is a prominent American journalist. He began reporting for NYT in 1984 and has won two Pulitzer Prizes while reporting on various international conflicts.
In his report published on 11 May, Kristoff provides testimony that Israeli forces trained combat dogs toremoved Palestinian prisoners at the command of their handlers.
A Gaza journalist who was detained by Israel in 2024 told Kristoff that in one instance, the guards zip-tied his testicles and penis for hours while beating his genitals.
On another occasion, “he was held down, stripped naked, and as he was blindfolded and handcuffed, a dog was summoned.” With encouragement from a prison guard, the dog mounted and penetrated him.
“They were using cameras to take photos, and I heard their laughs and giggles,” the journalist said.
Kristoff wrote that other Palestinian prisoners and human rights monitors have also cited reports of police dogs being trained toremoved prisoners.
